"Retardance Engineering" sums it up perfectly. Going by the location of the spark which appears on each flash test, it looks like it flashed over between the LED and that 1.5 Ohm resistor. I wonder if an actual slot would have saved it. Ironically, I think the breakdown voltage on those 'slots' may have actually been reduced by the removal of the soldermask there... Why they even felt the need to design it like that I have no idea, with better component placement they could have avoided having those tracks so close together!

That is ridiculously illegal device. You can convert earthed socket to unearthed socket with that even if the earth was connected.

Polarisation does matter. The reason is that a lot of equipment has internal fuses, especially if they are low rated. If there's an internal fault, and that fuse blows, there's a 50:50 chance it will be on the neutral and the internal circuitry will remain live. Also, an internal fuse like that provides not protection for earth faults should the fuse be on the neutral sides. In addition, any device connected with a single pole switch will remain live if that single pole switch happens to be on the neutral side. Maybe in these days of residual current protection devices it's not as important, but polarisation is always a good idea in principle.

That USB supply boggles the mind. They had adequate space on that board to have proper clearance between the line side and the low voltage side - but they just simply didnt bother. Disgusting. I agree, Amazon should be on the hook for this.

This product was very common in Malaysia because they use the same UK sockets. There are no shutters. Most wiring that was made in some commercial lot that uses 3 phase was poorly wired and if one of the MCB tripped, they would unscrew the wire from the MCB, then move it to another MCB.

The Cross Head on those screws are likely to be JIS. (Japanese Industry Standard.) These are used extensively throughout Asia and possibly China.

That schuko plug is a disaster, just like the rest of the product. There are supposed to be actual spring contacts in that earth connection hole in the plug, but I can't see them here.Looks just like a folded metal piece with a hole in it.

The circuit uses those extra thin transformers which I mark as a big "no no" in my dictionary. I would guess that the maximum current those USB outlets can provide is around 300mA to 500mA at best.

Pins on the plug is not supposed to be sleaved on european plugs. The reses in the socket is there to prevent contact with the pins, before they make electric connection.

that piece of loose solder on that earth jack is yet another dangerous thing. It might start roaming loosely through the whole device possibly shorting out things.

I would have liked to see the usb output voltage and current tested before adding the high voltage.

The Schuko-plug doesn't require a sleeving on the pins because the socket is recessed to prevent that someone come in contact with live parts, if the plug is only partially inserted. The plug itself is too small for a standard Schuko-plug. Even if the earth would be connected, you can't use it with these plugs. Actually the french plug is not polarized because there's no regulation demanding on which side L and N should be.

I do like the black MK plug. That MK style I have only ever seen in white, white and sometimes in white.

4:45 The socket on the left is polarized but it is polarized differently in different countries. In France the line is on the right while in Czechia it is on the left. There is funny thing in the continental Europe that of the eight countries that do not use the German Schuko six are neighbors of Germany. The two others are Italy and Slovakia which used to be part of Czechoslovakia (a neighbor of Germany).

The polarised socket at 5:40 is a French style socket. It is also used in countries like Belgium, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The non polarised one is a German style, and it appears to be used throughout most of Europe. The French style socket might have live and neutral wires swapped, so live is on the left and neutral is on the right This device is also very questionable. It has the connections to earth, but no continuty. There is nothing to stop you from plugging in earthed appliances

i've come across things that could be in a way far worse, usb charger plugs with no fuse or fusible resistors in the mains side at all, multivoltage 5v and 12v 'laptop' like power supplies, with switching mosfets that could fry eggs even with minimal load on their outputs all with definitely not class y or y2 capacitors between live rectified mains and their outputs, with those multivoltage things having iec chassis plugs having aluminium pins which snag/bind on the leads you insert, and of course being soft aluminium, loose connections to the pcb terminal internally 😱😱

Anything that breaks the ground is highly illegal in Finland. I think in extension cords and power strips one should stay in as basic design as possible. Anything that tries to separate itself is suspicious.

They should not be sleeved as the the fact that the socket is depressed is for the safety. If one uses them with old style ungrounded sockets there is a potential for a risk. This would be illegal here as it breaks the earth. On schuko that is by design. The Finnish system is based on idea that if it fits it is OK to use so it is illegal to remove the earth unless one allows only double insulated devices. Later when they needed an extension cord they went to the closet and took it back into use not knowing that it was dangerous. There are plenty of such cords still in use. There has been several documented fatalities because of such cords. Before mid 80s it was here illegal for an end user to do any wiring. There has been 158 documented electricity related fatalities (excluding fires) since 1980. 34 of the reports mention extension cords. is would be legal if it had an old round plug but then it would be useless on any new installation that has only earthed sockets. I wonder about your high voltage test, you said 3000V. If that is AC you will get problems due to the capacitor and that is not a product fail! For DC you need 4242V (3000*sqrt(2)) and that is the correct way to test this type of power supply. Anyway I would not rate this one badly in my USB power supply tests (Getting close to 200 tested supplies), safety is non-existent and I doubt it can deliver much power.

I have just purchased a multiplug - USB & 3 UK/EU/AU sockets that has the problem of dodgy shutters is there a UK BS regulation that should protect against such rubbish being sold especially from a major online retailer?

SMPS has a filter cap between input and output so I wouldn't call that test valid. Every single wall plug for phones would fail that test :)

The most frightening thing about these crap electrical products are their good reviews. Good people, who don't know any better, buy them and everything seems okay to them at first. Then they leave the room or they go to sleep, unaware of the danger.

What gets me is the Chinese approach to earthing, as is shown by every piece of dodgy Chinese kit you've ever examined. In this one there was no earth at all (was there even an earth wire in the flex?). In others the flex has an earth wire, but it's not connected in the plug - at best the wire has been stripped and the bare copper placed in proximity to the earth pin so that if you waggle the pin you might get a brief connection. Do the Chinese not understand the concept of earthing? Do they think earthing is unnecessary and just include an earth wire in the flex so it passes cursory inspection? Do they think earthing is some strange delusional belief we hold and they make a vague attempt at keeping us happy? Do they think earthing is like a good luck charm and they just make a token attempt at it for good luck? With all the Chinese stuff I've seen you an Big Clive do teardowns of, I get the impression some dodgy geezer in China decided to go into business and got some wet-behind-the-ears graduate to do the design. Somebody who has been taught how the components work, but hasn't yet been exposed in real life to the practical engineering side of tolerances, ratings and electrical clearances (pretty much how I was straight out of university many, many decades ago). Maybe not even a graduate but a hobbyist with some back-issues of the Chinese equivalent of _Practical Electronics_ or _Elektor._

So glad I did my research instead of buying this.

Some points: - This SchuKo extension lead with four outlets are forbidden in this kind of form in Germany (and Greece, or Thailand). Do you need 3 lines (phase, neutral, saved earth) with 1.5 qmm copper cable as minimum. - For the import into the EU do you need the (CE) sign. Normally the border custom police should it check. - No check signs from TÜV or other electronic engineer test centers. Do you earn what you buy ... don't buy shit from the People Republic of China - buy own products from your local reseller!

Not the sort of product I'd buy... most multi socket leads I have are masterplug (british general), or duraplug... That dangerous contraption... you could imaging having the tv, PS4 & sky Q plugged into that, along comes the 2 year old and in goes the pinky... zapp! It's amazing the amount of cheap chinese crap that gets in, the EU are to blame mainly for letting it in, maybe this time next year CE won't be valid anymore ans everything will have to conform to British standards and bear a kite mark.
