If that was true, U.A. would be meta. They have a Herald of Perfection, Armades, an Emergency Teleport and a Special Summon Breakthrough Skill. Probably the reason why they weren't meta was because they never got another level 4 or lower U.A. (BTW we are still missing the Hockey players)

In Magic, “fair” and “unfair” are common slang for strategies in older formats. A fair deck plays a mix of modest threats and interaction like removal and/or counterspells. An unfair deck is a deck where the main strategy is on an axis that is intentionally difficult to interact with. Note that “fair” and “unfair” here don’t refer to power level. Temur Delver just got a card banned in Legacy, but is generally considered a “fair” deck. Some examples of famous fair decks are: Delver, Death and Taxes, Humans, Death’s Shadow, UW Miracles Some examples of famous unfair decks are: Dredge, Storm, Show and Tell, Vintage Workshops, Burn, Amulet Titan

Thing is, we have balance cards to try and help the rogue decks go up against the meta but then the meta decks abuse them. For instance, we need MST to negate Chaos Max Dragon's effect to make Chaos Max Dragon less of an unfair matchup but then Chaos Max just uses its MST to negate ours.

Which sadly a lot of decks don’t have. I mean, Red-Eyes is my personal favorite casual deck (I know, how original of me) and that deck has some decent extra deck monsters and an easy way to bring them out, but there are too many restrictions on Red-Eyes Fusion for it to be viable against top tier decks and even the best Red-Eyes fusion monsters is basically just a glorified Ancient Gear card with just over 3K ATK that can inflict burn damage. I mean, none of the Red-Eyes boss monsters are really all that terrible, the problem is just that their impact on the board is too small to be considered your win condition, and you essentially have to rely on burn effects like Inferno Fire Blast and Black Flare Dragon to get anything done, and both those cards are too slow and too inconsistent to really be able to OTK your opponent or even get you consistent wins, and thus Red-Eyes is kinda trash.

This video highkey makes me wonder why me (and many others) continue to play a game that forces lack of player interaction at high levels of play. This is probably the biggest reason I don't even bother playing IRL. What's the point when it's either you lock your opponent or the opponent locks you.
@lefthandedscout9923
@lefthandedscout9923 6 жыл бұрын
BlackBeartic the game nowadays actually has too much interaction between players Back ages ago you'd make a board, pass and your opponent would try to break that board, and you'd have maybe 2 traps to fuck them over but you wouldn't have card effects that activate on their turn for monsters you have up like thunder king rai-oh, master peace the true dracoslaying king and shooting quasar dragon, and you certainly wouldnt have cards you activate that aren't even on the field, like ash blossom, evenly matched or fairy tail snow Now that is definitely more player interaction as back before you wouldnt do anything during your opponents turn save flip 1 or 2 trap cards but now with so much "player interaction" the number of interesting interactions that lead to fun memorable games has decreased

I think that an "unfair deck" is named such because it has its own way of generating advantage significantly more than other decks can or removing advantage from your opponent in a one-sided manner. However the way to gain advantage is usually through 1 or 2 cards and they may have a bricking factor which is a High-Risk over High-Reward factor. Best examples are Brilliant Fusion, Master Plan, Predaplant Cobra, Wulf Lightsworn, basically anything you don't want to draw, but that's why many extra deck monsters are considered overpowered, they can be tutored at any time; ie if Shaddoll Construct were a monster you had to tribute summon, it'd be the most annoying thing to open turn one because god knows you aren't getting two shaddolls on the field without normal summoning, and at that point would it still be worth playing?

Majespecters- My favorite deck. Unfair Advantages: All of them are Stratos for a different type of card/search in different ways, can “Float” indefinitely, searchable solemn strikes, ties leads to massive plus, all of them are untargetable and indestructible by card effects. Disadvantages: A light breeze can knock them over, backrow hate slaughters the deck, can be slow as hell, MR4, tribute themselves to activate s/ts.

When I think of an unfair deck... as in the deck hates itself is the GAGAGA archetype. You basically lose battle phases or additional special summons because you use one good gagaga card. So another deck is the Neos fusion deck. Or Neo special deck. The neos fusion cards go back to the deck during the end phase unless you have a field spell "Neo space" And gladiator beast don't go back to the deck during the end phase. Yugioh is a game of depression xD

As some one who has only recently started looking into YGO again after stopping back in 5ds, I think... (Whenever Blackwing was one of THE decks and had just come out) It's kinda interesting how the meta seems to be going on. I remember there were, I think, 4 main deck metas back then? I looked at some results for regionals and it seems like some deck called "True Draco" is, like... Unbeatable. The top 4 in some regionals were just all some form of that deck. Not sure how this relates to this video in particular, but just the idea of fairness. It seems like the game has gone from different kinds of unfair to a specific kind of unfair.

What can I do to make my Celtic Guardian deck unfair. Rank 4's?
@TVMAN1997
@TVMAN1997 6 жыл бұрын
My problem is I don’t play any arch type based deck mostly because I don’t have the money to buy individual cards. That’s why I play the Celtic guard deck because the cards are super easy to get. When I built my deck I was learning that I had to have more cards that broke even in my deck. Which helped a lot! Sadly the deck doesn’t have many broken combos but it’s fun to use. Every new support card that warriors get I try to max the card out to its full potential. Like Isolde for example, that card was able to help get more combos going I do have do play bricky equip cards. But I would say the deck is in the “to fair” deck range.

The fact is, in every competitive game, the most fair strategies are eschewed for the strategies with the highest possibility of winning. Yugioh is no exception, except in the fact that there haven't been a large number of fair decks for a very long time.
@ggwp638BC
@ggwp638BC 6 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much the basis of any competitive game. Why do you throw a flashbang in CS:GO? To make your opponent blind while you shoot them, making the fight unfair. Why do you buy items in LoL or Dota? To get better stats, giving you and edge over your opponent, making it unfair. And there is nothing wrong with it, I'd say. My only complaint with Yu-Gi-Oh, which translates to every other TCG game, is that as time passes and more and more cards are printed, the average "power" of the cards tends to go up. Pretty much the effect we call "power creep". And although it's most known effects is making older stuff useless, my biggest problem with it is making new stuff far too complex. Today if you're doing normal summons you're probably doing something wrong, for example. And if the card wasn't printed in arial 1 to make room for all of it's effects, it probably shouldn't be played. Of course, I'm exaggerating, but that's a tendency. More effects and more interactions lead to stronger cards, which force the player to buy them to keep up with the meta and so on. It's not inherently a bad thing, of course, some people love that stuff (otherwise these games wouldn't be popular) and to an extent you could say that with more complex cards and effects you lower the effect of luck in the game, but to me Yu-Gi-Oh is just past the point of complexity to which I would consider it viable for me to put enough time in it to go beyond just casual play.

As a yugioh player who moved to magic I love this topic because in magic there are “fair” decks. Where you just play creatures and kill your opponent that way. Instead of playing some kind of combo finish. In yugioh though fair decks are just not a thing that exist in any way. You can’t have good cards i in yugioh only game breaking. Just think it’s funny that the game is so power crept and far from what made it fun that we can only accept cards as being good if they are “unfair” enough. Does that really sound like a fun game?

yes, everything can be stopped in some way, the reason ash blossom is so good is because it stops plays that could make a deck unfair, and some less used decks, like the superheavy samurai, have cards like battleball, which when used with a kaiju, you can just destroy your opponents hopes and dreams, and personally, it is fun to do that to someone who made a meta deck just to be the best

A good example of this is Goukis. By the numbers, you would almost think Goukis should be meta: they generate insane card advantage, they float on like modest mouse, and they spam links with the best of them. But they aren’t doing anything competitive... because they’re too fair. They don’t interact with the opponent most of the time, short of setting up their beatdown strategy, and they never do anything that would make the opponent throw down his hand and shout “ugh, this is bullshit!” As a result, for all their card advantage and floating, they’re only just okay

Being meta or one of the best decks doens't make it inherently more unfair than other decks, the most unfair builds of trickstars (burn focused ones) are also the worst ones, as the other way applied, being unfair doesn't make the deck meta, infernity still being the prime exempla of this, even with the banlist, the cards within the archetype by itself are still one of the worst card design in yu-gi-oh, they still to this day can make the sure definition of an unbreakeble board, that doens't make they a good deck because they are fragile and incosistent though, their unfairness accomplishes little to what it could be possible because of their lack of support, but because they are missing the "x" card doens't make they automatically fair. Dinossaurs is a poorly design and a unfair deck, whichever they are currently tier 1 or tier 2000, they aren't meta because a number of other reasons, even though there are more effective strategies in the meta that doesn't make the deck fair by comparision, effectiviness =/= unfairness . Also, I'm not insinuating they should get hit, they being worth of being hit by the banlist is another unrelated question.

Card games live and die off Aysymetric design. For some TCGs, it's a bunch of decks with various strategies and some decks counter others, ala pre-X series buddyfight. In other's it's everything is broken so it's fair, Pokemon TCG does that really well. Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't quite snuggly fit in that second category as it looks like they are trying to "balance" it sometimes, but I would put it there.

This reminds me of a game called Yomi. The designer was testing the decks and knew that the meta tended towards breaking the mechanics and creating these dramatic power setups. He wasn't going to get into that part of it at the time and went with more normal decks playing the game the way he intended. He came to the realization that the game was more about skill, it was emulating a fighting game and so the game is about knowing when to push and when not to, so rather than allowing for those extreme advantages he changed the rule set to keep all the decks fair

I haven't played competitively since the Dragon Rulers days back when Tachyon first came out. I was playing Constellars at the time, and from what I understand, it was a rogue deck. I still have it, but I seriously doubt it'd be could viable in today's meta.
@Wes_Darvin
@Wes_Darvin 5 жыл бұрын
I have a different problem with tcg's in general. Back when I was just out of high school, I was introduced to magic the gathering and taught how to play competitively. My competitive mindset was so engrained that I had a hard time playing casual games. I really just wanted to have fun, to build fun combos. But, I have a hard time building a deck that is fun in casual games. Either I intentionally make a deck that's so bad it can't do anything at all or I build it well enough that it may not be good enough to go far competitively, but it still breaks casual games. As an example, I'll talk about my favorite mtg deck I built for casual games. I built it for 3+ player games specifically, (which is a game type that works far better in mtg than yugioh). It was a green/white saproling token deck with a lot of creature synergies to tap or sacrifice creatures for mana, gain life for each creature coming into play, and card draw. It was pretty slow most games, but on average I could get a combo rolling at around turn 3 or 4. One on one, it didn't do much before being crippled. But with other players to focus on with a lot more powerful stuff on the field to deal with than a thallid or two (wait 3 turns to summon a single 1/1 saproling token basically), that left me free to build up to a combo that summoned hundreds of saproling, gain a ton of life, draw my deck, and then fireball every other player and creature with the one fireball I had in the deck for giggles. I've played without the fireball and even the enchantment that gives each creature +1/+1 for every other creature of the same, type which is stupid when there's even just 10 saprolings on the board. Competitively, it's garbage. Casually, it's unfair. I've done the same with total defense wall decks. "You can't touch me and you'll just draw your deck in an hour or so" simply doesn't work competitively, but in casual games it's just infuriating and not fun. So, I'm stuck in the middle. I don't like to play competitively because it's not fun for me, and I can't play casually because it's not fun for my friend(s) who also enjoy casual play. Even just getting preconstructed decks and playing them out of the box. There's something I'm doing that I don't know how to pinpoint. My friend and I just got the old preconstructed kaiba and yugi decks. They're made specifically to be balanced against each other, but I win every time. Doesn't matter which one I play. My friend isn't making bad plays as far as I can tell. We discuss and talk about mistakes, but 9 out of 10 games are my win. I guess what I'm asking is, what would you suggest to a competitive player trying to play casually? I don't care about winning or losing, but I don't pull punches either. Should I intentionally make mistakes?

If we define "unfair" by " a deck with something your opponent cannot do" , then it's not surprising fair decks don't win. It literally means your opponent can do everything you can do and then some more. Odds aren't on your side by default. So, expanding on that reasoning : The solution would be to make every deck "unfair", not make them all "fair". Because every deck being fair means a lot less diversity in this game and I like the huge diversity of decks the game gave us over the years and I don't think taking that away would solve anything. Good video, thanks for the reflexion.
@Yumil_fab
@Yumil_fab 6 жыл бұрын
Except in this definition, unfair doesn't mean OP tho. there's a lot of stuff a regular deck cannot do (unfair, so) that is not OP. And beside, under your own reasoning, what you're describing is already happening and will happen anyway so it's not like it would make any sort of difference in the long run. And I have no interest in keeping playing the game if they decide to remove 85% of the game mechanics they spent 20 years to introduce sorely to try to solve the powercreep that is by default unsolvable anyway. That, and I don't really believe removing other extra decks method would magically create space for more link based effects. Unless rehashing the previous effects of cards you just took away in but with links counts as novelty.

My rogue deck is pretty op. Pretty much restrict my opponent from doing literally anything with attack restrictions and barrier statues and burn them to death. The basic idea of the deck is that 1 card of mine can counter 2 of theirs. What makes the deck so OP is cus of Worm Linx which let's me draw a card during EACH endphase (yes that includes my opponents end phase). I get 2 free cards every turn and because the point of my deck is that 1 card of mine counters 2 of theirs (in theory), those 2 draws often give me the resources to further back my opponent into a hole. If I can get 2 worm linxs out I often times actually deck out before I burn my opponent to death

What I really hate (I am kind of a noob and play the online version with all cards against real players, casual only though) is how the opponent on turn 1 does a lot of stuff, sometimes I sat there for a solid 5 minutes because he special summons this and uses an graveyard effect on that and so on. I am a simple man, I just do maybe 2 or 3 things before ending my turn, I don't win often but maybe at around 40% of the time. I fucking hate this, I can understand if you do this in competetive games, as it shows you put a lot of thought into it and made a well structured deck, but in casual? Most people also just copypaste decks they found on the net. When I first saw Pendulum monsters in action and my opponent spawned 5 monsters in one turn on his side, I just forfeited. If you use Pendulum, I forfeit, Pendulum is bullshit. Also games rarely last longer than 10 turns (5 each player), I remember fondly the times of old school Yugioh where it becomes an intense battle for the last few LP.

While I agree about Eternal Soul's monster popping effect being kind of ridiculous, think for a second, would you honestly believe it wouldn't be on the banlist if it didn't have that drawback? A card that not only protects your Dark Magicians but allows you to grab another one or a card that can pop either one card or your opponent's entire backrow? I guess if they changed it to only destroying Dark Magician then it would be better, but having no drawback on a card like that is pretty broken, imo.

Of course it wouldn't be on the banlist. It's in dark magician. That backrow argument is awful too, decks these days don't run much backrow. It's all in the monsters. Hand traps or otherwise. Not to mention it's a continous trap, so one pop and it's gone. So many decks have access to searchable s/t removal that dark magician will never make the cut.
@Juan-zs6jt
@Juan-zs6jt 6 жыл бұрын
Even without the restriction Eternal Soul wouldn't be close to banlist worthy: 1. It is a trap card, so it is dead when you draw it, and will likely be destroyed on your opponent's turn by an effect/Twin Twister or you may as well be OTKd before even playing it. No matter if you go 1rst or 2nd the card won't generate an advantage. 2. It makes Dark Magician inmune to effects but you can still kill him by battle with any strong monster. 3. Relating to the previous point this is a card that supports Dark Magician. A vainilla monster who does nothing to generate you an advantage besides some spells that only work if he is on the field. If you XYZ the protection effect of Eternal Soul is useless. 4. Relating to the previous point it is a card for the Brick Magician deck, a deck that 100% of the time bricks. Even if Eternal Soul were a spell you would get OTKd by any decent deck.

I agree with card economy, but I think you have to take into account card quality as well. For example, that unkillable Quasar combo with the Brandish spell, Eagle Booster. You now have gone neg 2 to summon an unkillable monster with a free negate of anything who can also attack twice for 8000 possible damage. Is that a bad play, because you went neg 2? No, because the game is halfway over already! Card quality is much less important, but it has to be considered in some cases.

You know, that's the issue with most card games and part of why I stopped taking them seriously. It's not just Yu-Gi-Oh! There's a deck in Vanguard that gives you two extra turns for free. There's a deck in Buddyfight that can give you an infinite number of them. There's also a card that makes it so your opponent basically plays with half life. Every card game suffers from insane amounts of power creep and it blows. It's not like say, a fighting game where skill decides wins. It's mostly luck and horribly unfair advantages like Towers and Master Peace. It doesn't stay fun like that.

This is why I play Zombies. Pure zombies with a couple Shiranui can go double Omega 1st turn, especially with Gozuki. We have a 1 tribute Fire Lake. Brillant Fusion is completely busted in Zombies since you can play 2 Garnets, and use Zombie Master or Uni-zombie to get him out of your hand and get some use out of him. Also use Plagues effect to put him on top of the deck and make Brilliant Fusion live again. We can easily go in 6,7 & 8 synchros, rank 3,4,6 & 8's, we has a couple fusion monsters that are pretty good and strong, and can go into link 2's and 3's really easy. Zombie World screws with a lot of decks that need a specific Type. If we have just 1 zombie already in grave we have like 5 Norden equivalents aka 1 card xyz or synchro (Solitaire, Uni-zombie, Zombie Master, Gozuki, Masked Chameleon) and all are searchable.

Not really. Yes you want to get better cards, but generally there are always counters and combos, usually resulting in more of a rock-paper-scissors of various metas that don't always require having a small batch of super-rare super-expensive cards. Yes having those cards is helpful, but it's usually completely possible to get by in other TCGs. Or, at least that used to be the case.

Atem Andrew I played magic for a good 4 years and I can assure you unfair cards/combos are how you won. Shut down your opponent before they can play their stuff, either by damaging them heavily before they can play their big stuff, or countering said big stuff. Regardless of how each deck played it came down to getting your bits out faster than your opponent, and you need "unfair" cards to do that. It just feels different in yugioh because cards stay meta relevant for much longer, because no set rotation.
@JojonathanOliveira
@JojonathanOliveira 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you understand what 'unfair' is. What you described is how you play the game, be it Aggro, Control, Combo, Midrange or whatever you have one goal and you will deal with other decks based on how you execute that goal. When you insert cards that outclassed others the do the same thing then you created an unfair card. Since YGO has no tiers the game move itself by unfairness, even giving support to an archetype is unfair because your cards will do more than they should. Magic does have some unfair cards, "Iona, Shield of Emeria" and "Jace, the mind sculptor", even "Bolt" can be considered unfair. But if any card topple the balance of the game they are ban in magic. Stupid as shit mechanics like "Affinity for Artifact" are a little different, they create unfair decks, but thanks to set rotation they don't stick for long. So this problem is a lot less of a problem im MTG

I play Dark Magicians. I totally understand why you hate Eternal Soul. I played against Altergeists in my locals last week, they were able to bounce Soul back to my hand easily, I was miserable. But, with Dark Magician the Dragon Knight and Dark Magical Circle, that is the dream “board lock” scenario. But, it’s kinda inconsistent for myself, and after reading this, it’s too “fair”. What do you think I could do to improve this to compete with the REAL META decks?

secret village can be super unfair considering the match up ofc and WW engine

You have a good point. Decks that are fair don't always win, and this also could play right along with the natural power creep of the game like Blackwings, they used to be unfair and highly abusive but thanks to the natural power creep, the deck and cards have become fair which the except Gofu due Links made him abusive which led to his incursion.

The thing about yugioh is that even the worst made decks can beat the most OP ones if you’re lucky and/or skilled enough. I still otk people with my signature “double dragon master knight” combo to this day (although not nearly as reliable as it used to be).

So... bad designed and op yu gi oh cards is the way to fmgo konami... so we have to spend money on op things and older decks without new op support will never be good forever

Unfair might not be the best term for this. A better way to put it would probably be that in order to be competitively viable, the deck must have some method of tilting the table in your favor, above and beyond just having a big blank beatstick that's probably gonna get nuked with any number of monster removal methods that are making the rounds, assuming the opponent lets that beatstick see the board at all (since most methods of getting said beatstick could also get more dangerous cards if you used them instead, and best not to make assumptions when you're at a tourney). The more heavily a given card tilts the table without caveat, the better. Cards get banned when they either tilt the table to the point of singularity or take a hammer to the table entirely (such as self destruct button). A big attack value can help, but it is not enough to outweigh any useful effect unless the card is also immune to absolutely bloody everything, and very few cards are both of those things for any length of time (and honestly, the immortal card is probably gonna be played regardless of attack value unless it carries a poison pill). The most generically heavy tilt effects are usually ones that interact with card advantage and/or effect negation, hence why Dzeeff talks about those concepts so often when this subject comes up.

I love your videos, man. I’m a casual YGO lover who dabbles in the game every once in a while, but I AM a competitive Smash Bros. player. So I’m fascinated by other games’ highest end meta concepts. You explain things clearly, with a level head, respectful to potential objections, and you know you’re stuff. Suddenly I find myself watching more videos about meta YGO than meta Smash. 😂
