You have a nice set up for testing the impulse wind up spring on your fm mag.

I like the stand. I've got three tractors with mags on them and unless there's an intervention I see more in my future. I've got an Allis Chalmers B and an RC and a Farmall A/B hybrid. My nephew is a building trades teacher in ND. I have to show him this.

You have an admirable collection. Say hello to your nephew. From one teacher to another

Mr Pete, they used the impulse coupled mags on the Wisconsin bkn series (and others im sure) They were so darn heavy to spin over that the impulse gave a real advantage to an easy start

Thank for explaining this.

Like the little test stand you made

Mags like that are still used on basically all piston powered light aircraft, two for redundancy. They're just a good old rugged ignition system.

Dear Mr. Pete: Old magnetos were great for bringing up nite crawlers for fish bait. Maybe you remember that?

The Wisconsin AHH AGH, etc used a Fairbanks Morse magneto without a gear. It had 2 raised flats (where the gear would be) that fit into the female slots on the drive.
@donboch99934 жыл бұрын
The older John Deere "A" also had the same pistons as a 208 Fairbanks Morse Old Field motor.

The impulse coupling also retards ignition timing to prevent kickback then centrifugal force holds weights out and impulse coupling becomes a direct drive

A lot of Engineers used them for starting the Oxy/ Acetylene torch.

I've just been testing mine, it's a magnetti marelli from my Moto Guzzi Superalce when it was on the bike the HT lead was not seating properly in the insulated housing, so I took it off the bike to see it better and I'm getting a nice spark holding the plug on the magneto casing and turning the spindle by hand. I noticed your plug had a huge gap I suppose this was for a better visual demo.

Magnetos... also used in motorbikes .. you may have kicked one over in your earlier years... today motorbike builders use them to avoid the weight of a battery or having to use one altogether... in of course kick only bikes.

Good lord I got zapped by one of those trying to cut it off one day and my finger wandered too close to the cover which had exposed contacts... Oh god that was worse than an electric fence, and way worse than any Briggs engine. Stick a charge like that on your cars door handles and you'll never worry about theft!

why do we need alternating current in newer engines it seems like a waste generating it then having to convert it and on and on why not use this its simple. I have searched youtube over and over and cant find nothing on this its almost like dc magneto has a potential to do so much more but being suppressed for some reason or maybe people just dont think of such things I dunno.

I think engineers after paid to make stuff as complicated as humanly possible, probably no thanks to the EPA. I love my old Wisconsin. That's the best engine I've ever had.
