You can hear that guys like Mike Patton and Devin Townsend have actual good vocal technique when listening to their clean and harsh vocals. Even a guy like Serj Tankian fucked up his vocals way more than those guys - you can hear he is clearly talented but doesn't always use proper technique. Same with Brent Hinds from Mastodon, but he's a little more inconsistent, I think it may be moreso to do with substance intake lol.

@@arekhautaluoma4276 that is a big factor, been screaming myself for 13 years and smokin and drinkin do take a toll. However smokin DOES also tend to make your voice deeper too so can be beneficial to bass and baritone clean vocals in that way (not promoting smokin tobacco just speakin from my own experience lol)

See also Brandon Boyd. I think in his case it was a mix of technique issues and some septum thing with his nose. He still nails it sometimes but Patton's voice somehow has held up over the years

The way Patton wasn't throwing up a shredded throat by the next song (which was "Easy," by the way), but instead his singing voice was still beautiful and clear, is outstanding. A true virtuoso, I love it.

I was 20 when Angel Dust came out. There was an old down-low bar that had a CD 'jukebox'. They made the mistake of stocking AD. We would play Cuckoo and Jizzlobber for the dudes waiting for 'sweet home alabama'. The bar wench had a button to skip songs. They had no idea. We laughed hard.

He's like Kyo's American counterpart haha. Though I'd go as far to say that he's more well rounded in doing live vocals than Kyo. Kyo seems to have trouble doing his highs live, not to discredit the badassery of his voice though.
