I just want to give you a disclaimer - I am not an expert, I am just sharing what I and many others use to wash our family's laundry in an effort to use ingredients that are safe and economical. There is some evidence that using soap instead of detergent can cause a build up in your laundry. According to many sources, including Better Homes and Gardens, this can be remedied by adding 1/4 -1/2 cup of white distilled vinegar to your rinse cycle in place of fabric softener. I am aware that you all invest a lot of money into your family's clothing, bedding, towels, etc. and I would not want to recommend something that would harm your investment. If you have any concerns, please research all of the laundry detergent/soaps in order to make the best decision for your family. Blessings! Robin

There is an easy way to test if there’s build up in your laundry, at least if you have access to a “normal” top loading machine. Wash a load with your normal diy laundry soap. Then (either dry or wet) put in the same load of laundry with commercial laundry detergent, but stop it near the end of the wash cycle before it drains the water. If there is build up in the clothes, it will come out in the water used in the wash cycle. At least from a chemical technical stand point, a soap and a detergent are not the same class of molecules, and a chemical detergent is not something the average person can make at home. Let me be clear: I think it’s great that you shared the recipe since everyone was asking about it. And what you do with your own clothes is your business, not mine (also commercial laundry detergent is kind of a newer invention, people washed clothes without it for centuries). I personally use commercial laundry detergent that gets a good score on EWG’s website (I will never use anything tide brand), but everyone should decide what they want for themselves. Even if there is build up in your clothes, if you would rather have that then that’s ok.

love to read your disclaimer. as mine, i made my laundry soap and also fabric softener (distilled white vinegar). so every laundry i have 1/4 cup white vinegar with lemon oil. and i dont have problem with my laundry it end up smell fresh and even it dries it dont smell anything funky. and dont have problem also with my HE washing machine :) more research to help another for us to stay away from commercial products with full harmful chemicals.

Hi Robin! I make my own laundry soap too with pretty much the same recipe that you shared. To save even more money I make my own washing soda. Take plain baking soda and spread it out on a cookie sheet, bake it for 30 min at 400 degrees. The heat converts the baking soda into washing soda. (Taken from Science Notes: Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaCHO3), while washing soda is sodium carbonate Na2CO3. When you heat baking soda, water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are driven off, leaving you with washing soda."). You need to let it cool before using though.

I recently found out that ash soda is basically the same as washing soda but with less water in it so you use half as much. I don’t know if this would be any better price wise than making it but another idea.

I have made my laundry soap basically the same for a long time. I usually use Zote soap though and for scent I use boosters and or lavender Epsom salts which is same as boosters. ....and Borax is safe. I actually add 1/8 teaspoon of it to glass of distilled water and 1 tablespoon of plain Epsom salt and dash of pink salt every morning and night to drink. Keeps me from having pain in my joints and bones I have broken growing up. Borax is natural and we used to get it naturally in our food but the grounds and fields are depleted of it now says and we need that mineral.

I have made my own laundry detergent for the last 10 years. I've used both liquid and dry. I make a five pound bucket with dry laundry detergent, then I use a cup of that to make my own liquid. Mostly because I'm cheap. And 1.5 cups of dry makes 3 gallons of liquid. I use genuis in exiles formula. The bucket of dry has been going since Easter of 2014, it's now about half full.

I love making my own Washing Soda. At Costco I buy 13.5lb bags of Baking Soda really cheap. Turn on your oven to 400 degrees. Pour baking soda on a baking sheet. You can fill it as much as you want too. I put it in the oven and every 30 minutes I remove the pan and stir it up, then put it back in. They say one hour is all it takes to change it into washing soda. But I usually go longer cause I normally have quite a bit on the baking sheet. You can see when the change happens, its visual and chemical. The ph balance of the baking soda totally changes. It works amazing on my clothes. I add one cup to every wash load. It works so well that old blood stains even get removed! Its insane. Before I knew that I could make washing soda, I would just use baking soda in the laundry. Because baking the baking soda changes the ph and becomes caustic, it creates a clothes washing powerhouse. Its truly crazy how well it works. Thank You for this informative video. I will be trying this out :-)

This is the recipe I use for my brothers, my dad, and I. The four of us made this last 10 months even with accidently using more than 1tbsp on our HE machine the whole time. For the heck of it I mixed some in with water and found it worked great as a spot cleaner on our carpet. I leave out the fragrance because my dad has skin allergy to the perfume and chemical fragrances in products. The detergent smells great with the lavender castile bars but the scent doesn't make it through to the end.

I need to dispel a belief a lot of people have about HE washers. The belief is that they are always front-loaders. So....for the record....I have a top-loading, HE washer that has an agitator. That's another common belief....that HE washers don't have an agitator. Ooops. 😀 Some do ! I make my own laundry soap & have to say I enjoy making it. I vary the scent by using different scented bars of soap. I started out trying Zote...but I don't care of the smell of it or of Fels Naptha. I like to use plant-based bar soap.....I'll use Mrs.Meyer's or Dr. Bronners or Pre de Provence. I pre-mix my powdered laundry soap in a little water before adding it to my washer just to ensure it is totally dissolved first.

I use this same recipe except I use fels naphtha soap.. 97 cents at wallyworld and Downey beads. Borax has so many uses. Research it you will be happy you did. I used borax a lot when my babies were in diapers. I kept a bucket of 1 cup mixed with hot water on top of my washer and put the soiled cloth diapers in after rinsing in toilet. Washed daily or every other day as they got older and went less. Kept the diapers sparkling white and neutralized odor immediately. . Before people gasp at the work of cloth diapers....my kids all were potty trained quick (2 yrs old), never had rashes and we saved tons $ and helped the environment. We did use disposables at night and when out on errands. Made my own cute covers with velcro so no pins and only had to buy a pk of disposables once a month as the result. I also was a stay at 🏡 👩. Without borax I would not have done it though. I was afraid of the smell. But as I said it neutralized it immediately.

I love this detergent! It really does last forever. It takes less to get the job done..but it is, for me, a lot of extra work once you run out. Making a new batch is not nearly as convenient as picking some up at the store...it's a commitment to stay with. However, it DOES work and it lasts for a very long time.

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. Adding the scent boosters and processing all the ingredients in a food processor was a great idea. I actually use Dr Bronner's Sal Suds and Oxy Clean. But if I omit the bar soap I could use your recipe in place of the Oxy Clean!!

Thank you so much for this! Just tried it out and I’m really impressed by how well it works. Everything smells fresh and is clean. I just have a couple stains that didn’t come out and was wondering if I should add a bit more of one particular ingredient to get out the stains? I.e. Which ingredient of these you used is best for stain fighting? I can add a bit more to the mix

Jasmine, you can use a bar of the Castile soap as a pre wash for stains, just rub a bar on the stain. :)

Preparing to make my own laundry soap. Curious as to why you add baking soda. Other recipes I’ve researched only use borax, soap and washing soda (with scent boosters optional). Will add to my recipe if you can tell me the benefit. Enjoyed the vid, look forward to more! New subscriber.

This is a great idea, but the soap wreaks havoc on your machine. Then if you use vinegar very often it breaks down the seal on your machine.

I'm definitely going to make this. I absolutely love the smell of Mrs. Meyer's honeysuckle detergent, and even use the dryer sheets, but the smell is nonexistent on my sheets when i put them on my bed.
@sharonlatour6230
@sharonlatour6230 2 жыл бұрын
the ''smell'' on the dryer sheets and in the laundry detergent is used to cover up the toxic oder from the chemicals that are used in the products to clean and soften your clothes. It is far healthier for your family, and the environment to make your own. Plus, the liquid laundry detergents you buy at the store are mostly water.

Having watched several KZfaq videos making your own laundry detergent the recipes are quite similar. It was very exciting to think that we could make our own detergent for much less money but have to say I am very disappointed. I can't understand why everybody says this smells so good; it smells good when you are making it but when your laundry is finished that's a different story. I have to add additional scent boosters in the bottom of my washing machine before starting. Also, I found streaks of what looked like grease on my sheets. It is the bar soap because it does not melt. So I began putting the detergent in a cup and adding the hottest tap water I could. Next load I put the detergent in a larger bowl and hot water. It took 2 minutes in a 1,000 watt microwave for me to get the soap melted into the water. Since all of the dry products are laundry boosters I did not find the clothes to become as clean as with a regular store-bought laundry detergent. Now I am adding Dawn dish detergent as a degreaser. For those who may be interested in trying that it's one teaspoon per small load, two teaspoons per medium, three teaspoons for a large load. I have an extra capacity top loading washer so I have used two tablespoons of Dawn without a sudsing problem. If you try this keep in mind you need to watch for too much suds. I sure hope that this works and will enlighten others if they are having similar problems. It is not my intent to put this lady's video down in any way. It's just my honest feedback.

Honestly, I was wondering how people could say this works well. As someone skooled in Cosmetology, I can tell you that bar soap can only be made into a bar because something in it is making it stick together. Think about it for a sec’. That same substance will also cause it to stick to everything else; your body, shower stall, bathtub, etc. I watch people put this in homemade soaps and want to beg them to stop. It will only cling to your clothes AND your expensive machines. Castle soap especially is thee worst. No matter how “natural” it might be, that is the most clingy, filmy stuff out there. It’s horrible. I tried it once because of all the hype (and that was even the liquid form) and dumped it after one go around. It was insanely filmy and I had to use another cleanser just to remove the castle soap residue. Please do not use that stuff or any other bar soap. Again remember, if the soap is sticking together in bar form, that means it will stick to whatever else it is used on. Some of them can have great cleansing properties about them, but you then have to clean again just to remove the soap residue. That’s too much work therefore not a great option. And I have tried a few very similar homemade laundry detergent recipes and my husband and boys asked me to stop and change back to store bought. It was just not cleaning as well, and their clothes got dingy (refer back to my comments on bar soap), didn’t smell right and seemed to get dirty again if you just looked at the clothes wrong (I repeat, refer back to my comments on bar soap residue). These homemade detergents with bar soap added are sadly Not the biz 🙁. Please attempt something else if you’re on a tight budget

@@hismusicnme I was thinking the exact same thing with the bar of soap. I'm not a professional but it is just basic knowledge of a bar of soap that leaves residue in your shower to do the same to clothes and your washer. I'm not putting this video down either. I love this recipe but would substitute the soap. Still looking for more options.
