Fake fashion has become big business. From Gucci to Balenciaga to sports gear and handbags, replica designer brands are everywhere. Social media platforms promote the look and facilitate the sales and if you don’t have a fake, chances are you’ll know someone who does. But most people have no idea who is behind it. International crime syndicates have established themselves in Manchester, making it the counterfeit capital of the UK with their goods flooding across Europe. Their enterprises are implicated in everything from copyright infringement to human trafficking, money laundering and even terrorism.
Foreign Correspondent returns with an investigation into the fake fashion business by reporter Naomi Selvaratnam. Naomi’s story takes us inside the shadowy world of the counterfeit industry. With exclusive access to one of Europe’s specialist police taskforces working to stamp out the trade, she traces the money trail and reveals the organised criminal networks running these global chains. Naomi has also gained access to world leading authenticators to see how they spot the fakes. And there’s some tips for those viewers who may want to double check their purchases.

People don’y buy them for the quality because in most cases you can find better quality for less. It’s an aspirational thing where people with money like to say they can spend that sort of money no problem. For some they also like the luxury shopping experience you get from the stores.

A HUGE problem that no one talks about is the quality of the REAL is garbage for the thousands they want. Chanel has completely fell off . Horrible stitching/craftsmanship. People would rather buy vintage when the quality was impeccable or a great fake . With a great fake you get real leather even.

It’s ALL over blown narcissistic hedonism to think that owning an item makes you a better person, or better than another person. It’s all show to prove you have money… and quite frankly in many places you need security if you’re going to carry it or wear it. To me it screams “I want you to think I’m rich” and all I really see is the lack of self-esteem, and suspect that their ego far exceeds their kindness… so if I’m judging, it’s not the way they think I am…

@@tonshmarI’m surprised you don’t know. Look into it for yourself you don’t need to question a stranger on the internet… but for example when Apple outsourced to Ch!na the outsource company set up 2 floors in the same building and outfitted them identically. They make “real” Apple products on one and “fake” on the other… “real” go to Apple and “fake” to people who sell them at discount. I’m an Apple user but it makes me sick to know that somewhere out there I could be buying the same product at a fraction of the price… Apple are still making their money so no need to do anything about it … but you will be warned about buying the other versions… I wish I was more savvy about this stuff but I’m not so I will keep paying through the nose and typing on my iPhone 11 until I save up for the next phone. 🤷🏼‍♀️😩😂🤷🏼‍♀️

@@tonshmar I vaguely remember reading an article years ago about how the workers at the factories in places like China make the "real" goods during one shift, usually day time, and then come back to the factory after closing hours and just make more of it "off the record" and sell that themselves. Same factory line, same materials, same label. They're apparently able to do this because the factory managers and guards can be easily bribed, or are sometimes even in on it. No idea if that was ever true or if it still happens. But it was a real article in a reputable magazine, so could be the case?
@pcp284

Raids like this take place all over the world. The real tragedy is that all the sized items are destroyed or incinerated. You would think they can just removed the copyrighted labels/logo and donate/repurpose them to prevent pollution and wasting of resources. But I do recall that even the "authentic" labels would burn millions of dollars of unsold merchandise on a regular basis rather then discounting them to "preserve" their prestige name. Burberry was one of them!
@kokoromarudi7717
@kokoromarudi7717 3 ай бұрын
The reason is seized items are illegal and pose health regulation risks. Anything you do with them is breaking the law, and nobody seriously wants them except for the fake designer bag lovers. Regarding the wasting of resources, what do you think the people making these fakes would do to the unsold bags? Do you think they comply with environmental laws when they produce the fakes?
@sharinglungs3226
@sharinglungs3226 2 ай бұрын
Well if people stopped buying fakes then there would be none of this waste of resources. I do think it’s terrible some brands destroy products but I suppose it’s too costly to store. Most luxury brands do go on sale and some even have factory stores in outlet malls, Burberry being one of them.

black Birkin bag, which was the first good choice I ever made. I can afford a Kelly bag in any color. If I were 25, I'd probably buy it. But now I consciously don't want to associate with a woman who has a Kelly and a Birkin. I have no interest in spending $40k on a bag (a piece of leather + labor = up to $1000) Imagine spending $39k on this brand. Totally unnecessary.

The concept of consumption really differs from person to person. In fact, everyone has the ability to own their favorite big-name products. In the past, I was also very keen on pursuing luxury goods. I waited for months just for that one favorite style. At that time, I felt that everything was worth it. Later, a serious illness changed my perspective on life. I began to think that instead of spending money on brands, it would be better to experience the beauty of the world. Wouldn’t it be more meaningful to use that money to travel? So now I choose to buy fakes on *hotdups* , which not only satisfies my pursuit of beauty, but also allows me to have enough money to enjoy every trip.

@ComanderCool909
@ComanderCool909 3 ай бұрын
They should, but they NEVER would. The police see themselves as nothing more than enforcement of the law. They don't care about homeless unless they're breaking the law. And they aren't going to expend the effort to locate a charity to manage it for them. On top of that, theres absolutely no way LVMH or others would allow anything similar to any of their brands to be distributed, if its fake they want it destroyed so the shitty quality doesnt reflect poorly on them, and sales of fakes don't eat into their profits; And if its real they want it destroyed so people dont get it free and lower the value. (in fact they do this themselves every year, either shredding or burning massive amounts of last seasons Ready-to-wear products, so that it cant end up on clearance racks or discounted anywhere, ever) Edit to add: this entire issue could be solved if luxury companies used RFID tags. If my supermarket can afford RFID to stop people stealing a steak, chanel can afford to put one in a several thousand dollar coat. To add to that: Im not encouraging anyone to buy luxury, its a rip off and its not luxury at all. Luxury brands ready to wear collections exist to fund the haute couture houses so that the filthy rich can have the actually luxury clothes hand made for them, at the same time advertising them back to you. If you want luxury, buy hand made tailored unbranded clothes, they'll fit, theyre better materials, they dont make you a billboard and if you buy the staples they never go out of fashion, thank me later. Source - worked with Versace, Chanel, Gucci, Tiffany, Ray-Ban, Prada, Burberry, plus others I cant recall, most of the big ones minus a few.

@@ComanderCool909 The fake crap gets destroyed simply because of safety regulations and that no homeless person needs these fake luxury bags. What are the homeless supposed to do with this stuff? Are you suggesting the government to break its own law or encourage homeless people to break the law by selling this crap to make money? It's called luxury for a reason. Most people don't give a sh** about these designer brands, and nobody cares about what a nobody wears, so no need to worry about being a walking billboard without pay. People can spend their money on things that don't make sense to you, just as you probably spend on hobbies and things that others might not care for.

I’m a designer for a major fashion brand and can tell you that we are not nearly as bothered by fake products as the police are because of the side effects that comes with the production and distribution of these fake products. Don’t get me wrong it hurts when you see something you designed show up on the fake market days or sometimes even hours after it’s official release, but we move onto the design of the next product quick, but the fake product will continue to fund criminal activities long after the fact. Personally I couldn’t care less if someone decide to wear fake products, no matter how good they are you will always know that it’s not real and if that don’t bother you then by any means carry on, there will always be enough people discerning enough for the real merchandise.

I don't get the obsessions with having these Designer items, be it real or fake, either way your funding either obscenely rich people/corps who don't need anymore money or organized crime/terrorism. Personally I'd rather just buy decent quality plain clothing, but i guess that would be boring for most :-)

these companies should produce luxury products half the time to sell to rich people and the other half to give away free to poor folks, luxury goods are a human right, not just something rich people get to enjoy. I'm not talking diamonds, poor people can survive without real diamonds, but beautiful suede boots, cashmere sweaters, silk blouses, Egyptian cotton pillow cases and sheets, caviar and truffles should be given away free to poor people, they suffer enough as it is so with luxury goods at least they have something to look forward too.

“Quiet luxury” leather goods made with high quality materials will always be chicer and also a better value than anything emblazoned with designer logos. Why pay thousands of dollars for a ubiquitous plastic-coated canvas bag when you can buy a high-quality leather bag made with beautiful hardware for a fraction of the price?

Ridiculous prices for products which can often be produced for pennies on the pound. Of course crime groups are going to copy the patterns and give them to people who appreciate the design but not the prices. Sometimes the products sold on the 'Black Markets' are made in the same factories by the same workers but are then just sold through unauthorised outlets.

I think one of the biggest arguments against fakes is that it takes business away from brands, but I disagree. Back in the day, I could never go to Louis Vuitton and buy a bag so they wouldn't lose revenue because I bought a fake. If you want to pursue value for money, *condup* is definitely worth owning.

ALL I'm hearing is corporate greed. Personally I never understand paying 100's for something, simply because it has a badge. There's a high chance the branded product is manufactured in the same exact factory as the knock-off! The only difference is, the knock off has a HIGHER VALUE for money, compared to some the branded junk sold nowadays. Buying a brand is merely a cash grab.

The worst thing is the counterfeit industry targeting small designers i mean big brands is bad enough but taking a small business's design means we lose much of the little amount we do make. We can't keep up with some of the fakes of our items as its big factories in certain countries ripping off the designs.

What do you think the mark up for a legitimate Fendi, Hermes and Gucci bag is? The companies arent losing money. The same for good jewelry, there was at least a 300% markup and that was years ago. The gold and diamond markets arent in any way effected. Now they are selling natural diamonds.......the only problem is they arent very pretty and are occluded so they really arent worth it but they are "natural"
