Sure, they'll refund your money. Assuming you pay for shipping or take it into a Whole Foods or Kohl's. Unless this is the week they have you looking for a UPS store. And better save your shipping receipt, because they'll absolutely claim they haven't received your return. I guess it's the least a platform should do. Unlike JD which had really good service until crypto card shortage. Their customer service literally took repaired cards and sold them at insane prices and refunded at MSRP telling the buyer it was unrepairable. Then after the mining craziness, soms suspect they just sold mining cards as new. But Aliexpress is where most flashed bios cards go. So every purchase for a graphics card is a really exciting and scary deal.

Depends who you buy from. Amazon is a marketplace, you're better off buying a product 'shipped/sold by amazon' vs one 'shipped by amazon, sold by kewlbucks4yoo'. Buy from shady 3rd party and roll the dice. Even then if a fake makes it into the product stream ahead of amazon, they won't know. They don't build them or pack them into boxes and yea, they do stand behind it. Those issues can happen to best buy, micro center, newegg or anyone else.
@scriptosaurusrex
@scriptosaurusrex Жыл бұрын
@@mattk6827 You are aware that amazon does stock sharing with third part seller right? Pretty sure there was a techquicky or LTT video on this a couple years back. Basically, if it is 'shipped' by amazon then it doesn't matter who the seller is, amazon or otherwise. It all goes on the same shelf. So the likelihood of microcentre or similar getting a fake is drastically smaller than amazon. Basically, don't buy anything of value off amazon is the lesson here.

I knew about the flashed BIOS scams, but I didn't know that "frankencards" were a thing until this video. I don't suppose there's a chance you guys at LTT will intentionally buy one of them to test, is there?
@nickfosley2882
@nickfosley2882 Жыл бұрын
I guess the main question is why even bother? What would they really test; if it performs as good as an actual card that it's pretending to be?(Answer is most likely no) I can't seem to figure out a decent video idea for it to exist, they already showed us flashed BIOs cards, the same information and lesson can be applied to these franken-cards. Not trying to shoot down your idea, just trying to understand the purpose/lesson gained from making the video you requested. If it's to bring awareness, this specific techquickie video already achieves that purpose with its eye-catching title.

eBay has pretty good consumer protection. I am surprised that they didn’t mention any tactics to protect against this. 1. Does the graphics card have VGA or any other output it shouldn’t? Many scammers often use very old GPUs like the GTX 650 Ti as a base for their illegitimate products. One surefire way of determining a fake is if has VGA when the real product shouldn’t. Nvidia 900 and AMD R7 300 series and newer do not feature VGA. If there is a 1050 Ti with VGA, that is definitely fake. Mid to high end cards of the slightly older cards do not feature VGA as well. Of course this doesn’t apply to which may have VGA like the GTX 750 Ti. 2. Unbranded card: If a card doesn’t have any branding on it and the pictures are generic online shopping pictures, skip it. This also applies to cards that simply branded as NVIDIA or AMD and are clearly not reference models. 3. Weird coolers. If the cooler doesn’t look like anything you find from from the card makers themselves like MSI or Asus, skip it since they are likely using older heatsink. Do be aware though that if someone is selling a card from an OEM like Dell or HP, the heatsink may not be standard but follow rule 2 if you have any doubts. 4. Comes from China. This is not a surefire method especially if you do live in proximity to China but the vast majority of scam cards do come from China. Simply select your own country only or your home region (NA, SA, EU, etc) if you don’t live in proximity to China. Again, this is not surefire since scammers can live anywhere but they are most prevalent in China. 5. Generic photos. If the photos used are reused photos from other seller or the internet or generic online shopping photos, beware. I am not saying this is a clear indicator of a scam, but if you see this, be keen to follow the previous rules to sniff out a scam. If you believe you have been scammed, you can report it to eBay and they will return you your money and you get to keep your mislabeled GTX 650. I don’t know how it works with other marketplaces though. Do not fear used cards, they are great, just know what you are looking for and you will be good. And eBay has you covered in the event you do fall for a scam.

A nice idea for a video would be the longevity of a ssd vs a hdd today, from different stand points, like a professional that has to write data everyday or a normal user that doesn't do much with it. Even if it's an interesting topic, it's really hard to find informations about it. Also considering that today we can even buy easily a 2T ssd m.2 nvme for like 120. So would ssd be a good choice for storing backups? Or in a long run would be better the choose the hdd? Which would last longer and in which cases?

I mean, hard platters have a lower price per storage unit (50$ for a 1TB hard disk versus 100$ for a 750GB solid state drive) but have a slower read/write speed.
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 Жыл бұрын
@@GrayDaDolf The issue is shelf life. How long will a HDD retain the information compared to a SSD? It's not only read/write cycles that limit Flash memory. The memory cells will discharge over time if the drive isn't used. Same with a HDD. The platters store information by magnetizing incredibly small spots on a spinning disk. Each 1 or 0 is stored as a individual spot. Over time the magnetic charge will get weaker and weaker until the drive head can't read the information reliably. So the question is how long it takes for the information to become unreadable. Early Flash memory was using so called SLC tech, or Single Level Cell. Each sell stored a 1 or a 0, and that was it. This meant that there were pretty large difference in the charge for these so in theory they were a lot more long lived than more modern designs such as DLC, TLC or QLC. Now I cant find numbers for what these values are exactly, but it's not a lot of room to play with. And yet in a DLC flash memory each cell can take one of four (4) values. If we assume that if both values stored zero the "level" is 0, and if both values stored is One then the "level" is 1, you will have two more "levels" that need to be retained and discernable by the controller. So 0-0 = 0, 1-0 = 0.25, 0-1 = 0.75 and 1-1 = 1. Now any drift in the stored value will make it harder for the controller to read that value back. But DLC is old tech. Even TLC is old today, and the latest of the decently cheap SSD's are using QLC memory, storing four bits in each byte. Now things get hectic as to do this the storage controller will have to accurately store and read sixteen (16) levels in that cell. If they manage to make PLC memory it will have to differentiate between 32 levels per cell! So any drift in the stored levels is bad news for the stored data. A flash drive that is in use can have the controller reading and refreshing memory cells to stave off memory loss. But writing to a cell also degrades it so a part of the flash memory in the drive is set aside as spare area to be swapped in whenever the memory controller detects that a cell is no longer able to retain the information reliably. All in all we are putting a lot of faith into these technologies. HDD's we pretty well know how long they last, but flash memory is not as simple or well understood. Back in the 80's and early 90's I remember running special programs on hard drives that basically read all info and rewrote it back, checking that what was written could be read. They also could do multiple attempts att reading sectors that were failing, and some times were able to recover the data and write it back. If the sector failed on write it was mapped out and a spare was reallocated. Yes HDD's also have extra storage areas that get swapped in when sectors starts showing signs of failing. However that type of program was largely made obsolete with the introduction of IDE drives. The older MFM and RLL drives allowed access to the raw data read by the drives read head, while IDE and SCSI drives hid that part of the operation from the rest of the system.

Always try and buy a card from a regular guy reselling a GPU. One of your questions when you buy a GPU should be; Do you have another I can buy as well? If they have multiple cards to sell, run for the hills. If they are only selling a single card, you are most likely good to go - not a miner, not a shady transistor swapping con. Dang. if the product fail the minner has a remplace option but others not. The cuestion is that so faithful is to its sayings/guarantee. I know a mining friend who has even had to replace a 3080 and did. As someone who just pulled the trigger on buying 7 4080's on ebay for $500 each 2 days ago, I hope that I didn't fall for this. Though I am gambling on the 60 day return policy to save my butt in case if things blow up. Thanks for the video!

I’m sorry to say that price is probably too good to be true. I hope you can get your $3.5k back once the inevitable happens, or, at least you get lucky and they’re usable. Do you plan on flipping them or something?

@@patricknelson I understand it is a bit of a gamble but hope that ebay will have my back if there are issues. I was planning on flipping them for $1,000 each after I check them with gpuz and benchmark them.

@UnderOneLight Yeah, it was an ebay scam. The scam works by miscategorizing the item and having the purchase be above a certain amount. It makes it harder to submit a "did not recieve item" form. Figured it might be too good to be true but trusted in Ebay's policy to have my back.

While you are saying that I have one of these 3080, peladn is the brand, I paid one third of what it costs in my country and the performance is better than the ones presented by Founder Edition on the internet, and better than my friend's gigabyte. Just buy from the right places... as for not having a warranty, at ali for example, you even have a 2 year warranty from the store, plus the protection of the platform. You only have to send the graphics card back, the store even gives you a refund on the shipping, or, you can simply buy another one since you can buy 3 for the price of one. In most cases, you get it fixed locally, send the receipt to the store, they reimburse you.
