Charles Henty, the man in charge of the Old Bailey, has a problem - the death of his uncle has left him with a working farm to run in France and a crippling inheritance tax bill to pay. He is desperate to protect the jobs of the farmworkers and keep the farm running in his uncle's memory, but the only way he can do that is by selling two paintings he owns - if he can prove they're genuine.
One, believed to be by Sir Winston Churchill, was discovered in the coalhole of Charles' family home in London in the 60s. It's a picturesque scene of a medieval village in the south of France. But which village? For the painting to be accepted as genuine, the Fake or Fortune team must first find the exact location and then prove that Churchill painted the scene. There's a lot at stake, with a Churchill painting selling at Sotheby's in 2014 for £1.8 million, but a leading expert has grave misgivings about the authenticity of the picture.
Charles' other painting is a landscape of Dedham in Essex, believed to be by Sir Alfred Munnings, best known for his paintings of horses and once the most expensive British artist of his day. However, Dedham was also the home of Tom Keating, Britain's most notorious forger of the 20th century. Presenter Philip Mould is drawn into the murky world of fakes and forgeries, where nothing is quite as it seems.
The Fake or Fortune team pull out all the stops in this dramatic and emotionally charged investigation, but can they prove that both pictures are genuine?

What's really satisfying is that the Churchill painting was authenticated in September 2020 because someone found a thumbnail photograph of it at the Churchill family home in Kent by Paul Rafferty while researching a book on Churchill and his art. The photograph showed the painting but had it incorrectly labelled, so it didn't show up on searches. The photograph was in the archives there.

I honestly think it is a Churchill for several reasons. Not only was there a history behind the painting and where is was discovered but if you look at his figures from other paintings you can clearly see that they are very much alike...specially the hands and proportions. As an artist...you are continually growing and learning new skills. If he was uncomfortable painting figures...perhaps he was not happy with the final painting and thus he didn't sign it. For the record...I really enjoy his style of art.

If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it has to be a duck! If I had the money, I'd have bought it and called it 'My Winston'. Regarding the Churchill, how much evidence does the expert need?! The house, bought by Churchill for his daughter. Testimony from Clemmie. Testimony from the daughter of the gallery owner in St Paul. The borrowed pigments, the cigars and signed photo. The wax layer etc. It's faintly ridiculous that all of this doesn't point to Churchill.

"The figures are too good" Are you kidding?!! They aren't that good.... and they're very much like figures in Churchill's other paintings. Despite all the incontrovertible evidence, David Coombs is too dishonest, too prideful to admit his first opinion was mistaken. At the end, he offers a lame attempt to save face by including in catalog as 'unknown,' making himself look like a jackass. Hopefully when Coombs is dead and gone a more receptive expert will authenticate the painting as Churchill's work. Profoundly sorry for Charles.

Everything points to it being one. DC so typical of his breed, pompous to the end, heaven forbid he may have been wrong in his first assumption. But he couldn’t or wouldn’t bring himself to admit it. British stiff upper lip and all that, had to save face, and cover his bases, but he’s gutless. Wouldn’t like to be in foxhole with him, I would be watching my back Jack. Coombs ego is doing the authentication. Cannot bring himself to go against his original opinion cause it will make him look weak. But he looks weaker by not looking at the full evidence. Why is authentication left to a single "expert". It leaves room for ego and personal agendas. There should be a committee at least that goes through all the evidence not just one persons opinion of style.

@@laurahastings-brownstein1481 Sadly, facts have little part to play in the “authentication” process. What, for example makes Wildenstein an “Institute”? There was one aspect of their search that I would have liked them to follow up. If so that might just have tipped the balance.
@jennymay4720

I think you are right, as that would be French paint instead of an English Brand and would be decisive, because that means both types would be in that painting and it could be analysed to proove it. That would be a truly unrefutable evidence. Perhaps he could then buy back half the farm.

Although not to my taste Munnings was a very accomplished painter technically whereas Churchill wasn't. Any valuation of Churchill is based more on his reputation than his artistic ability. The record for a Munnings painting is 7.85 million dollars sold at Sothebys in NY. But you can still pick up lithograph prints by him for a few hundred quid.

I know it has nothing to do with painting but I heard once that Winston Churchill always asked his wife for advice or he would tell her what was going on and ask her what she thought about it and that a lot of the times when he could not figure things out or he wasn't sure what was the right thing to do she would tell him something and then he would think about it a little bit more and come to a better conclusion about the good of all the people because his wife helped him to see that that is what true partnership is about I don't know if all that is true or not I really hope that it is because it shows that he had a wonderful marriage and he was a very lucky man and she was a very lucky woman...🤗

Who would be able to know all this and it be another artist ??? It's so wrong. Stop giving these certain supposed experts (who have declared fakes originals) the upper hand. Have them prove why it's not the original!!!

If it was a forgery there has to be a original, where is the other picture

Forgeries can be 'in the style of' rather than copying existing paintings.

@@soniamacdonald9193 Well certainly true, but in this case we have all that witness testimony of Churchill painting something at the time in that street in fair detail, and if that isn't the painting, then there is a missing painting by Churchill of that scene. Kind of boggles. So to conclude that the painting was a forgery one has to either one has to disbelieve or discount ALL the witness testimony, archival evidence like the news reel etc. as somehow mistaken about Churchill doing a painting, or conclude a freakishly weird coincidence has taken place that defies logic. Or that the whole story of how they were found was a lie to sell a fake- equally unlikely. Which was why even the most unwilling "expert" couldn't bring himself to call it a fake because it made no sense. He simply refused to authenticate it.

At some point the show decided they needed a background "sob" story for each episode. Meh.

I was looking into how Winston Churchill once made a living forging and impersonating Famous French artists before he became a politician. Strange how this was cleaned from his history...

Why is it that if a eg figures or other detail in a painting isn't exactly the same they start thinkiing it's not by the real artist! Painting isn't like that, signatures vary, details vary, quality varies. If a picture is dumped in a coal hole, it's probably because it isn't very good and the artist didn't like it so much. I've plenty of work that's less high quality, I either destroy them, or keep the tolerable ones in a dark folio! It's part of the long process of getting better. Churchill had a battle with quality because of his time doing so many other things. Some views help you look like a better artist than others. His weakness was composition and yes those figures were typically weak. Sometimes so were Turner's, he didn't do people seriously! The Munnings had the magic light expert touch with those trees, fakers can never quite do the magic brushy strokes that develop purely from experience over many years. I'm so glad reading here that the Churchill was authenticated eventually, I wonder if the owner ever managed to buy back half his cottage.

The Churchill painting is awful. The vanishing points are all wrong.

...another pretentious art 'expert' proven to be totally useless, after a random photo proves the painting is authentic. (What a surprise... NOT!)

Not remotely interested in the Munnings. I would need to be paid to put that on my wall. The 'Churchill' is a vastly superior painting. The match of colours is extraordinary - the blue , green and yellows are fabulous. OK Churchill was an amateur but he was there for sure and maybe this was one his top works. I dunno. One thing I will say as a trail lawyer of 20 years experience - I find that Mr Coombs is, shall we say, unconvincing.

I love this show, but I struggle to feel sorry for someone who is wealthy, has always been wealthy, and who can't sell a painting for £200k in order to get more of a fortune. He'll have to stick with his current fortune I guess!

? He needed the money to keep the family farm in France running. As a result of this he said he'd have to sell half of it. So, not that wealthy. If he had a "fortune" 200,000 wouldn't be much.
