A burn-through wire under each engine would probably be a lot simpler than load cells. I hope you do eventually revisit this! There might not be as much technical exploration in it as your other projects since you’re so close to getting it working, but it would be so satisfying to see at least one perfect flight after all the energy that’s gone into it!

You probably already know this but the issue you are describing @ 8:11 with the integral part of the PID controller is called windup. There are a few techniques to mitigate this, one of the simpler ones is just to set a maximum contribution limit for the integral control. This is called clamping. There is also a slightly more advanced method called back-calculation where the I contribution is adjusted based on the difference between the output of the controller and the saturated output.
@LesNewell
@LesNewell 5 жыл бұрын
I term windup can be a bitch. If the control loop runs out of authority (or in your case has no authority) I quickly runs out of control. You could work around this by clamping the accumulator at 0 until you fire the motor. Quad copters often do this while they are on the ground.

It didn't look so bad. With a bit more thrust, you would be operating at higher speeds, which would give the parachutes more of a chance to inflate, and that would help the stages to separate and operate better.

Wow!! As an very old timey Estes (and others) enthusiast I'm blown away by your vector control. And how much time and effort and money you put in to this. To solve vector control, I used fins. I used D-12-0's in my outside tubes with a dual stage core. My simple rocket also failed to ignite the center engine. I'm positive that it came down faster than it went up! This was back in the early 80's.

Beautiful effort! One of my early memory of trying to fly an Estes rocket ( a Trident from the ‘70s ), very, very similar ( in that there are three cylinders ) that I wanted to look good so I spray painted a lot ( made it too heavy ), launched and achieved about the same altitude. The chute deploy pressure came through cutouts from the bottom main booster tube through the three smaller side tubes, to the top center tube. Chutes deployed, but like yours, at 20’ altitude. Thx for the memories. Btw - Yours is more awesome!

"Hey Joe", (- Jimi Hendrix) great video. I love the way you explain, especially the PID part. I have a low budget suggestion for controlling if the engine is sucessfully lit on the pad. Maybe you could put 2 electrodes under each engine, put some voltage on them and measure the current. Since flames should contain ions and therefore are plasmatic, they should conduct current if the motor is lit. What do you think?

Got a few good chuckles from this but enjoyed this project immensely. Good attitude after the fails, as well. A friend and I used to build what we thought were massive models long ago and even investigated getting into HPR but this makes anything we did look prehistoric by comparison (we simply didn't have the scaled-down technology to get into such "trouble" lol). My interest in HPR has always remained, though, so I have to check out some of your other projects. Thanks for sharing these even if I'm late to the posts.
