Should we ever use the term 'degree' in connection to Fahrenheit's (or rather Romer's) scale? I reckon degrees are strictly connected with Kelvin's and Celsius' (another historical misnomer) scales.

"Mass flux" makes me think of the reason that machining tools don't always need cooling: a decent chunk of the heat gets carried away by the chips or filings made in the process, so the material being removed acts as somewhat of a heat sink... Is that about right?

That phenolic sample you have had sitting around may have absorbed some moisture as well that could exacerbate bubbling.

8:00 I think that it would probably burn different when heated by the friction from the fall of the craft, because of the changing composition of air at different layers in the atmosphere. Maybe you mention this afterwards but I wanted to point it out now that I remember. To be more specific, I think that the higher concentration of oxygen where you burned it, in contrast with the lack of it "up there" would make a big difference.

1:07 Asbestos and leaded gasoline are also highly functional. Enriched uranium, too. 1:31 The main goal of a heat shield is... to shield "you" from heat. That should be obvious. 12:19 That video is from 18 months ago? How does phenolic resin + glass fibers compare with phenolic resin + carbon fibers. I'd have expected that the glass had a higher melting point.

Very curious if anyone has looked into the heatshield the VentureStar project of the late 90s used. My understanding is it tested very well, and was mostly metallic, would love to know any details about it!

An interesting thing I've noticed, Joe... To someone like me, who knows nothing, you're very clearly -not- giving me enough information to do myself a grievous mischief, very sensibly. I will probably fail long before I cause large-scale mayhem. But if someone already knows, say, how to make Reliant Robin, they ALSO know enough to do similar experiments on your own building off your work just from this video.

Fun fact: wood is a phenolic composite: cellulose with phenolic compounds crosslinked It does work as a heat shield, similarly good as other phenolic composites, but obviously inferior to optimized versions.

I was thinking out the possibility of tiles being somewhat sewn on. Similar to 18th century shirt buttons. The ship having a pin, or group of pins with holes near the tip of it. With the shield tiles having holes for the pins , and the holes. The tile fitting on the pin. Then a roughly 1.5mm stainless cable or rod fitting through, basically sewing on the tile. It would also use a thermally stabile adhesive material such as RTV. An aluminum in or titanium rod could also be used, or a carbon fiber rod made from twisted carbon strands. With the tiles forming a shiplap pattern, then every other row can be 'sewn on' called seen on because of the similar old style buttons , being attached with a loop on the back side. That is sewn to the cloth. I suppose it could also be referred to as 'Pinning' or 'Double pinning' it could also be used for other types of protection, such as radiation shielding. Possibly add graphite sheets with led sheeting in layers to do both this basically soldering the tile layers together. Possibly forming a carbon fiber composite using led in place of the epoxy. Use a loose weave carbon fiber cloth similar to burlap. It could be an interesting experiment. The stitched, sewn, or pinned Method could prevent tiles from being lost like the said cause of shuttle accidents. The one I saw in 86' was horrible, it was very cold weather. I don't think this would help that much. However the one in 03' that failed on re-entry because of lost tiles. Could be prevented. I liked the idea of the shuttle however I feel it should have a fuel tank. Possibly the engine end of the cargo bay holding oxy/fuel tanks, mae the shuttle about 30-35% longer, and have a cargo bay about 55% it's size. The rest being fuel. And the cargo bay doors being solar panels on the inside that flip out to get solar exposure. Or, the shuttle possibly being Made larger in diameter, and the floor and sides of the cargo bay holding multiple fuel tanks . A carbon fiber reinforced tank about 24"-36" possibly 48" in diameter, with roughly 4-6 on. Each side and 8-10 on the bottom. And the tanks having a foam piston inside at the opposite end of the outlet. Using nitrogen or some type of inert gas to keep the liquid pushed to the outlet. The tanks being possibly 50' +/- long , even at 24" diameter. This holds a fair amount of fuel/oxidizer.. it still use the external tank for launch however the extra fuel bring used in later stages, with a larger external tank. Also. To make a stm mission possible. A shuttle to Moon mission. The cargo bay could hold multiple landers. Possibly 2-3, 1-2 person landers. Or carry a single inflatable base/habitat. And a single lander. With a extra pair of solid booster to get the extra weight in orbit. However we have moved past the shuttle. Have an awesome day!
