This falconry video explains and demonstrates the first steps in training a brand new, captive bred, parent reared Lanner falcon. These principles apply to training many other species and ages as well. This is the first of what will be a continuous series of videos following the progress of this new falcon.

ben i’m new to your videos. a similar accident in 2003 really took me out. honestly the silliest thing helped bring me back: i played a word game called word whomp (on pogo), & truly believe it helped me create new nerve pathways over time. i had a bad concussion & lost about 60% of my vocab & had alzheimer’s symptoms. so i was in worse shape & it took a long time to be able to compensate for memory/word recall functions. that silly game helped a ton. i played it as often as i could. i recommend it ben i’m new to your videos. i had a similar accident in 2003 that really took me out. honestly the silliest thing helped bring me back. i played a word game called word whomp on pogo, & i truly believe it helped me create new nerve pathways over time. i had a bad concussion and lost about 60% of my vocabulary and had alzheimer’s symptoms. so i was in worse shape & it took a long time for me to be able to compensate for memory/word recall functions. that silly game helped a ton. i played it as often as i could.

Hey Ben, get better from your accident. I went through that lower back neck and head contusion, from auto accident, the guy hit me from behind and totaled my Lincoln Town car. The kid that hit me was totally trashed and they DUI him and arrested him. Make sure you hire a good attorneys and do not settle before legal counsel, the insurance company's are really good at taking our money, but they're not good covering. Your battle is with the insurance companies. I went to that process several years. But the reason I'm writing you is because we live in Florida and my girlfriend is making friends with a apparently wild paragon falcon, he's missing one set of talents, so it can only stand on the good side and has a stump on the other side. Irina feeds him every morning, right now, feed chicken hearts and hamburger the bird likes raw hamburger meat better. Probably going to switch to Frozen rodents thawed and maybe ground up chicken with the bone for more nutrition. Currently, that Bird's seems to be a dependent on morning feedings from Irina. And it seems to be starting to imprint with Irina. The bird let's my girlfriend come right up to him and feed it. I hope there's going to be a way to put a prosthesis foot or talon on the missing side where the stump is, if possibly. The bird is kind of crippled because he can't fold the injured leg back in flight it's hanging down in the air slip stream. Anyhow I am trying to gather as much information on the subject as I can hopefully your channel tol gathering information on the bird. As a side note, when I was in the military US Air Force I was an aircrew member and my squadron was called the Arctic falcons. Whatever the heck that meant for us. Anyhow I sure would like to help this little falcon out. There is another one that comes with it in the morning for feedings on raw meat. It could be a sibling which is getting bigger but I still think they are juvenile. They usually show up together. A few weeks ago they're around the same size but the injured falcon is a lot smaller for assumed reasons, it's disability. Hopefully the bird for survive long enough for us to figure out how to help him. I may have to try to build some kind of shelter here on the property that it can feel safe until it learns how to survive with its disability one missing talon. Or else it's going to have to be taken care of the rest of its life. I'm afraid to bring it to an animal shelter because they'll clip his wings and it will never fly again. I just couldn't see that. So trying to figure out so far it comes by every morning with the other bigger one. If you got any advice throw It My Way thanks, Regards, Mark As another side note the squirrels knows that birds not normal one squirrel tries to chase him off and he spreads his wings to scare the squirrel because the bird doesn't know how deadly his talents or beak are yet. At least the one set of talons that it has.

How is GMO and selective breeding scene in falconry?
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 3 жыл бұрын
In the United States there are a fair number of breeders, but because our laws are so strict and inhibitive to people getting into breeding, we have not done nearly as much with exploring all that can be done with hybrids and selected bloodlines. Don’t get me wrong, that has been done in America. But Europe, Canada and the Middle East breeders have explored the possibilities much further, And I believe that is largely because of looser or nonexistent restrictions in many other countries.

How would hybrids of non conventional raptors like kites would do? How would hybrids of smaller birds like kestrels, pigmy falcons do?
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 3 жыл бұрын
I have not worked with kites personally. Other than in rehabilitation. American kites are quite small. Many kites in other countries have more potential and are sometimes flown for flight demonstrations. Micro hawking is very popular and as the world becomes more urbanized, I believe small Raptors and small hybrids will become increasingly popular. Supposedly there is something called “hybrid vigor” where hybrid birds seem more spirited and game driven. I fully support exploring more micro hybrids.

Ben, I have a question. How do you train a sparrowhawk(for example) to eat only on your glove? Like...I saw a video on yt with one bird that caught sparrows and returned back to hand to eat but I never saw that irl
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t normally train them to do this, but I have done it many times in years past. In the video you saw, I do not know the technique that they used. But here is what I did. I first train the bird to eat off the fast and make it more important to do so than I usually do nowadays with my birds. Then I train them to go to the Laura, and then train them to land on an ungarnished lure (no meat on it) and immediately kneel down by them with meat on the glove and they hop up with the lure. If they completely let go of the lure and don’t bring it with, then I need to get them to be moderately possessive of it so I will put a little bit of meat on or a scrap of a few feathers. Once this routine works of grabbing an object and flying to the fist, I extended the distance further and further. Eventually I switch the lure for some bagged sparrows or young quail. I did this with Kestrels and Merlins. I have a friend in Canada who has done it with a Harris hawk that she uses to patrol her vineyard. It is a matter of constantly fine-tuning things. If the bird is too fat, it is more likely to fly off with the kill. If you have too much or too little meat on the glove this can also throw things off. But it is a system that can work with many species. It just takes a few extra steps to get it to work.

@@benwoodrufffalconry Perfect explanation, thank you so much, you made it much easier than I thought it would be . I am interested in trying this with my second kestrel, an early imprint atm. Do you suggest getting to it in the first flights ?
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 3 жыл бұрын
@@Nero-yz2xv if you are doing it with a kestrel, be SURE to also train in this technique kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g8meqMKcsNeXoac.html That will reduce the risk of the kestrel developing carrying off behavior. I would start the technique you are going for early on so that it is all the bird knows.
@Nero-yz2xv
@Nero-yz2xv 3 жыл бұрын
@@benwoodrufffalconry I learned that with my first kestrel in my early months of falconry..I didn't care much about carrying off back then since I was just flying him to the lure. But one day, the food fell of the lure while I was swinging it for the stoops...he saw that, grabbed the food and went straight up in a tree. The sun was slowly going away so after he ate, nothing could get him down. I recovered him the next morning tho but I surely don't want that level of stress again 🤣

I want a falcon so bad now. I can’t stop watching falcon videos. I don’t know how I stopped before when I was a teenager. But I feel a strong connection with falcon birds and yet I know very little about them. I am probably going to talk to my parents and my brother about getting licensed for a Lanner falcon that I can train and do everything with. I think it would be so cool and so much fun. Plus I can brag to my nieces and nephew and siblings 😂 purposely make them jealous 🤣 though doing this would mean I cant have a cat anymore 🥲 but honestly who cares?! Falcons are insane gorgeous predators. And I love predators. Plus Lanner Falcons can do lots of hunting tricks, and are a nice size. 🥹
