I installed 35" Falken Wildpeak M/Ts on my stock Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. I discuss why I won't run 37" tires on this Gladiator, mainly for performance reasons. I also talk about the AEV Pintler wheel that's designed for the JL/JT and why I chose it. After I have these tiers on for a few years I'll post a review.

Glad to hear you give credit to the Falken MT’s. I’ve been incredibly impressed with them on my JT- excellent in every offroad situation I’ve used them in (no rocks here in the northeast). Shockingly good on snow and even ice- I was planning to swap them out for winter but they are as good as any 3 peak rated AT I’ve used. 16k miles and still quiet and wearing well, I’ll also be doing 35’s this year and plan to go with Falken MT’s again.

I didn't think to check the winter rating until you mentioned it. These have the M+S designation but not the 3 peak snowflake, which you pointed out. The BFG K02 has handled the best for me on snowy city roads, but the Goodyer Duratrac did better on snow-covered trails. A few years ago I was on the La Sal mountains near Moab, with less than a foot of snow. My 34" K02s had a hard time getting around at a quick pace and I often slid off the trail. Yeah they did the job, but the two Jeeps I was with that were on 37" mud terrains had no trouble at all. Last night I drove the 35" Wildpeak M/Ts on the snow for the first time. I had to be ginger with the throttle from a stop or I'd lose traction, where a narrower K02 wouldn't have slipped. I think part of that is also me getting used to driving a truck with a lighter rear end instead of a Jeep. In time I'll have a better feel for it.

Great video, thanks. I'd like to learn more about your experience with the Wildpeak performance in the snow vs your KO2s. Also grip in the rain. I also worry about MT's excelling when pushing hard in roots/mud (what I do 10% of the time) vs snowy and rainy roads (90% of the time).
@Berserkeroffroad
@Berserkeroffroad 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. We just had a few bouts of snow (like everyone else in the US). I have to be careful with my observations because this is my first truck and it handles differently than my Jeeps did. The MTs did grip but the back end felt light and was more likely to lose traction when turning in snow. My KO2s were also thinner and did a better job cutting through the snow on the road to grip. 35's are better at riding on top of it. A few years ago I was on a snowy mountain pass and my narrow KO2s were a hinderance. The snow was deep, so my Jeep would sink up to the frame rails. The guys with 35s and up could ride on top of the snow (and made me wish I had 35s). So it really comes down to where you need the tire to perform- on the street or trail. Last month I spent a week exploring forest roads in Arizona and the 35" MTs took me everywhere I wanted to go- but a guy on ATs did the same. This weekend I'm going to Frostbite at Kansas Rocks and it'll be a mudfest. That'll give me a better idea of how they do in the muck. My KO2s handled mud surprisingly well, but again, that's because they were narrow and could cut through the slippery stuff. I've had these for ~5k miles and they're already showing signs of uneven wear (time to rotate!). My KO2s looked new after 20k miles.

I have a 2021 JTR 3.6L v6. I just went to 37x20s, Nitto Trail Grappler M/T, fuel wheels. I was running them with no lift & they had good clearance no rubbing etc. around town driving would be fine. However the mpg dropped from 15.8 33” tires to 13.3 MPG on 37s, 4.10 gears, at Altitude. I had a 3”-3.5 lift installed & geared to 5.13. Now my MPG is around 14.8 MPG in town with 37s & rising. The power feels like stock or better. I was thinking I might have to supercharge it but it’s good enough now without it. I wouldn’t go to 40s due to the cost of swapping Axels & more. It has a great stance now so 37s were a perfect compromise. I can still get into the vehicle without side steps which I will do eventually. If anyone swaps to 37s a re-gear is a must IMO.

35’s are great for a stock rubicon if you don’t want to do any suspension mods but I run 37x13.5 Ridge grapplers and get 17ish MPG on 5.13’s. The RPM’s aren’t significantly higher because… 37’s. So I’m operating in the intended efficiency range in each gear. Commenting simply because the justifications for NOT going 37’s should not really be mapped to you running 4.88’s on 32’s. That’s obviously way overgeared. Totally get the mentality to just get a diesel or 392 though. Especially in todays used car market.

Just subscribed to your channel last night. I have a very similar taste and understanding for basically not going overboard with the weight (your other video) and tire size as well. I just traded in my '09 JK 2 door that was a hefty boy with steel everything for a '22 Prius because life happened with work etc. I am planning on ordering a Gladiator from the factory in a few years as this work assignment winds down and I can finally retire. I too want aluminum bumpers, 35's, etc. Loving these wheels too BTW, they are also now on the list. What do you think about the Black Rhino brand? I have been seeing those a lot as well. Lastly, I am patiently waiting to see how this Gen 3 EcoDiesel does over the years and see what people have to say about reliability. I have seen some other channels where the owners had to limp the whole way off a trail because of issues with them. I'm assuming you have the 3.6 Pentastar? I know that is reliable but it is a bit dated but as of a month ago I know Stellantis or however you spell it (new brand for Chrysler) announced new engines, Tornado and Hurricane, which they plan on putting in the Jeeps i'm not sure yet. Love the channel BTW, great informative content.

Really impressive it just about every terrain. We have mostly had them in rocks. And recently took our first trip to moab with them. I think we will go with 35's amd maybe small lift later on. All the jeepers point us to 37's. But i think 35's are better all around. As far as power/fuel mileage and driveline reliability in my opinion.

Max Tow has 4.10 gears with the beefed up wide D44 axles (Anyone building a Jeep should really look at the max tow) It's essentially a Rubicon without the lockers and electric sway bar disconnect, but it has a Limited slip diff in the rear where the Rubicon has open diffs with an elocker. You will be fine on 35s with the 4.10 gears. I wouldn't consider a regear until you go to 37 or higher. Rehearing after adding larger diameter tires will not have you turning higher RPM than stock like it did on your other vehicle. Adding the larger diameter tires effectively lowers the engine RPM in a given gear while adding numerically higher gears will offset that.

@@Berserkeroffroad I'm running 37in with a 4.5in lift and stock 4.10 gears and I average between 15mpg and 16mpg. If I had 4.88 I'm sure I would be around 18mpg as well. These new JL/JT variants are nothing like the JK. The axles are much beefier and 37in is the new 35 on these Jeeps. You will be on 37in tires soon. I wish I had listened to other JT owners when they told me don't waste money on 35s go to 37s. Just my opinion as I came from the JK as well, but you say in the video you will just trade in for a version built for bigger tires and none of them are designed for bigger tires. They are all geared and setup for the tires they come with. The only reason you can run bigger tires is because they over engineer these vehicles knowing people will throw bigger tires on them. If you sit down and do the math on the diesel vs the 3.6l and factor in things like $250 oil changes, An extra dollar a gallon for gas, dif fluid, etc it cost less to run the 3.6l and with proper gearing tq is not an issue. I test drove a diesel recently and I'll be honest if I was towing a trailer a lot then diesel would be a good choice, but it was sluggish otherwise and I honestly enjoyed driving my 3.6l more. It's your Jeep and your build, but if someone plans on actually wheeling these Gladiators you better get it off the ground as much as those axles can handle and at the moment you can go up to a 38in no problem. I've even seen guys running 40s with minor upgrades. It's really not about the engine like it was in the JK. The 8 speed is so good and if your gearing is setup right it's pretty awesome.
