Finally got wheels and tires on the Jeep! In retrospect, looking at this now, it should have been the first mod but I digress lol. Check the video to see what I got and why I went with 33’s. I know it’s looking a little low still but that’s because I’m waiting to get my #OldManEmu 2-2.5” lift! Should arrive in a couple of weeks!
Shoutout to #ExtremeTerrain where I purchased everything. They did an awesome job mounting and balancing the tires and installing the TPMS sensors:

Honestly, if you're not boulder climbing in Moab, and just overlanding for the experience, 33's are the sweet spot. No gear changing, no broken, overstressed axels.

My sentiments exactly. Not to say I won’t one day but I know I better be prepared for it. But I also have a family who will NOT want to do dangerous stuff. For now I’m happy. Once I get gearing (which I know I need to do cuz its sluggish with the weight) I may consider 35s

It’s all in perspective, park your car next to a Prius, it will feel like you’re driving a monster truck; park next to a jeep with 35 or 37’, you immediately feel small and the thought of getting larger tires enters your mind 😊

I don't drive a jeep, I drive a 2000 GMC YUKON XL, I trail ride and plan to overland with it. I went with 255/85r16 tires that are 33 inches tall and still fit the stock wheels. And a 3 inch lift to prevent tire scrubbing. For all the same reasons you had. And it works great. I just did not need a 6inch lift and 35's or 37's for what I wanted to do. Great video!

A half inch breaker bar 24 inches long with an extension and six point socket for lug nuts. Good quality. Don't go cheap. Two small bricks for under the original jack. Four if you need more height for Jack. Can stack them alternate directions. Also helpful when stuck in sand or mud. Won't let jack sink. Everything could fit in an ammo style can. Loved the practicality of your thinking. Remember hunting in an old 1959 pickup with just mud-grips on the back, three on the column, Driving around Jeep's stuck in the mud. Know your vehicle and choose your line of travel accordingly wins every time. Enjoy. Post more of your adventures.

Well thought out and executed man. For a moment I was lured into the "at least 35s" cult, but the more I thought about it, I knew that 33s just made WAY more sense for me personally for a multitude of reasons. I also always liked that kinda old school look of aggressive off-road tires on some old school style D-window steel wheels. So went with 33s on some steel wheels and love it. Add the 2.5" lift and it just looks the way I wanted, and also give the kind of performance I was looking for, without paying for capability that I have no desire to make use of during a typical overlanding excursion.
@BaptismOverland

Agreed! It also has that Australian look (because in AUS they can't get 35s easily as it's not street legal). So you don't see a lot of overland rigs there on humongous tires. I've loved the setup 3 yrs later and thankful for my MPG and easier to replace tires haha

Great points! My whole vision was better on road and off road. So got a decent lift kit that improved handling and cornering while upgrading the shocks for better articulation. Was super happy with after results got metalcloak dual rate 2.5” lift with rock sports. Then next stage was thinking tires currently have 4.10 gears and was on the fence between 33” and 35”, Ultimately chose a nice meaty 33” tire all terrains nitto ridge was the answer. Night and day difference between mud terrains and all terrains. Jeep Jk rides better than factory now only con lost about 2mpg. Did the recal (J-scan super affordable). Overall I got a jeep that takes corners better despite the lift and is way quieter and smoother and takes dirt roads and getting to certain campsites like a champ without being exhausting. Absolutely love the video hitting the like and subscribing!

The grapplers were the ones I wish I got but didn't know until AFTER I got the falkens lolol. But I love them both. Here's the funny thing...I kept getting vibrations at 70mph and did everything to correct the geometry of everything but it was STILL THERE. I had it balanced 3 times and nothing. Read somewhere that Falkens are like that. But then I took it do discount tire who specializes in balancing and found out that it wasn't the falkens...it's that not everyone knows how to balance STEEL WHEELS. So they balanced it and it all went away. Rides sooo good now.

Something the note to can still actually use the stock jack with 33s but isn’t as simple as going with a bottle jack. You can buy a jack base and physically raise the jack. At the end of the day probably not worth it but it work in a pinch generally speaking I tell people they’re better off getting a bottle jack before they ever change tires the stock jacks are horrible once you get used to a bottle. My Jeep has a bottle and the stock one with the base and my k10 has the stock jack, a bottle jack, and a high lift because the high lift that I never touch other than to make a makeshift tie rod or something occasionally

The stock aluminum are very strong and light weight compared to aftermarket. I have a short-bed 4 door F150, 1.5" lift (Bilstein 6112) up front, rear is .5" higher and wears 5160s. I wanted as light weight a wheel/tire combo as is practical for what I do, which is drive mild BLM routes in the Mojave to camp and plink tin cans. I chose the P-metric 285/70-17 [32.8"] Firestone Destination A/T2 which weigh 43 lbs and put them on a 25 lb 17 X 8.5 Motegi Trailite to total 68 lbs each wheel/tire. I see so many people hanging 100+ lbs on rigs designed basically as 1/2 tons and the hubs, bearings and steering just can't handle it, which is why I suppose the aftermarket exists. Ya think? Anyway, I like my setup for both the 2 and 3 hours on pavement then the few miles off highway to get to any one of my three favorite spots. I used the think lighter unsprung weight was important for sportycars, but now I know that using as light weight a wheel/tire combo as one can will prolong the life of yer rig's suspension components, hubs, bearings and steering. Safe travels! everyone. Like your vid.

I agree! Sooo here's the thing...in a couple of weeks I'm installing an airbag suspension that will help alleviate any additional weight. At some point I also plan to ditch the steel wheels and go alloy (these steelies aren't light) and keep the tire size. It's lighter than 35s-40's. I don't want to put too much on the axles, as you said.

BUT what brand and what lift size is where im stuck. so im seeking help from those of us that want to overland. ones that also use their jeeps for daily use also I should Note I to wanted old man Emus but I was told that they are ment for UK like 110s and other RHD trucks there so knowing you also have some on order how did you manage to get that to work out?

OME is the best lift you can get. My friends here in NW Florida used to use them for rock crawling too and the ride is phenomenal. As far as sizing, I’m happy with 33s. Just don’t get a lift that’s too high that it makes it look funny. 2” lift was a sweet spot. Chris didn’t even have a body lift (only spacers) and 33s and was able to do black bear pass and Moab. I know this video was completed 2 or more years ago. But let me ask you. Why didnt you keep the original wheels and upgrade only tires? You could have gone with wheel spacers too?
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 11 ай бұрын
The short answer is I just don't like the look of the original wheels. I also like the utility of steel wheels...classic and more able to take beatings than allow. The long answer is when possible, I don't want to use spacers anywhere. I don't even want it for lifts. For me, I want contact to contact...the springs being the height it needs to be vs using spacers to give me height. And that's the same philosophy I use for offset...I would rather the wheel be in direct contact to the suspension system vs having a spacer between them. Less suspension components, less chances for something to fail somewhere.

Some advice, when putting the tires on... sit on your bum and lift the tire with your feet/legs and guide them with yours hands/arms. Which size tire did you get...285? Also what backspacing are the Method wheels? Suggestion, look into the AEV base booster. Might give you the clearance to get the stock jack up to the axle housing.

Just take a 2X8 and cut into 2 or 3 6 inch boards and put that under your factory jack. 33s are optimal for a TJ. For a JKU 35s are optimal. Those look tiny for a big rig.
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 2 жыл бұрын
See that’s the problem…that’s when people fall into that trap that they have to have 35s because of reasoning like this. Optimal is subjective to how you want to balance MPG, weight you want to add, and the gearing you have. I drive a manual…which means optimal for me is 33s until I can regear. Will I move up to 35s eventually? Yes, when I can get 4.1 gears. Appreciate the input but we gotta stop dealing with absolutes (TJ = 33s, JK = 35s, upgrade to 4:88 gears, etc). Do some research and balance your ride accordingly to your specific needs. How it “looks” on a “big rig” is not the right way to build. Find your sweet spot my friend.
@ryansremark6983
@ryansremark6983 2 жыл бұрын
@@BaptismOverland regearing will adjust the power loss, and alleviate strain put on your powertrain, and who buys a "jeep" for mpg anyway? That's what a Prius is for. And as you've pointed out, you're going to regear in the future, and then upgrade to 35s, why do that procedure twice? You're actually spending more money, and that defeats your whole point of budgeting. "Buy once, cry once" if you can't afford it, wait till you can. And as for rim choice, well countering your argument since steelies are heavier then aluminum it effects your mpg in the long run. And usually steelies are popular to beat on rocks offroad cuz they can be bent back, which is something your video says your not going to do... so wouldn't aluminum be better for your application as well ;) ? I'm a jeep enthusiasts, perhaps you should research some forums, there is some great members like "mrblaine" who could help.
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryansremark6983 You're right, we don't get a jeep for MPG but you still want to conserve as much of it as you CAN. I'm not looking to get 25mpg here but if I could at least stay relatively in the 16s where I'm at now vs huge reductions with all the other added weight, then why not? That's not a solid argument. NO MATTER WHAT RIG YOU GET, WEIGHT SHOULD ALWAYS BE CONSIDERED. I'm sure you know this. Bull bars, roof rack, cargo, RTT, ALL OF IT must be accounted for. In my case, I wanted the steel wheels for durability (it can be bent back into shape in a pinch if damaged vs alloy) and so with that extra weight, then I go lighter with the tires. NOW for your second point...you said "if you're going to do that anyway you're doing it twice." I'm sorry- do you only get one set of tires your whole life?? It's like a haircut- get a mohawk if you wanna try it- it'll grow back. I will eventually get new tires- it's inevitable. And by the time I'll need new tires, I won't be needing a new set of wheels. And by then, I do the overhaul...gearing and 35s. But when I got these, I didn't have funding for gearing yet and I wanted to see how 33s will do. Like I said, I appreciate the commentary...truly. It's good to get into discussions like this. But also take heed in what people say also...if it makes you happy, do it. Stop following what everyone says you should do. I'm not driving around going "Oh but what will Ryan say if these tires look too small for my rig?? Oh no!!"
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 2 жыл бұрын
Buy once cry once doesn't apply for things you have to eventually replace. That's why I bought the bull bar I wanted even if it costs more than most. It's why I got the RTT I wanted. These things are permanent. TIRES ARE NOT. You'll cry over and over every time you gotta get new ones. As an enthusiast, I honestly would think you woulda saw that by now
