@@fabiospasiano9885 Except wars are not football games and are not determined by a tallied score 🤦‍♂️ and you tell me to think before I type lol The Argentines had two major advantages in that they were already in much closer proximity to the islands (making it far easier to project power effectively), and in that they were the defending side by the time British forces arrived. As any idiot should know, it is generally much harder to take a fortified position than it is to defend it and typically results in the attacking side sustaining heavier casualties. Now imagine Argentina trying to invade the Falklands now that they are more adequately defended. Somehow I don't think that would turn out very well for them.

The thing is that the British had already entered into negotiations with Argentina to sell the islands. But since the Argentine junta was unpopular, they thought that taking the island by force would distract the people from their social issues. Since the British had been willing to part with the islands, the Argentines didn't think they'd respond, underestimating how humiliating it would have been for the British to back down. Thatcher couldn't have avoided war, even if she wanted to.

Yes I believe. 500,000 Britons depend on Food bank, there are more than 400 Food bank spread across the island. '' one in five Britons today are in relative or absolute poverty '' - The Trussell Trust. During the first three decades of the 20th century, Argentina overtook Canada and Australia in terms of total income and per capita income. At the beginning of the 20th century, Argentina was the 10th richest country in the world in terms of per capita. at that time, the expression "as rich as an Argentine" was common and frequently used by French aristocrats who tried to marry their daughters with Argentines.

I'm Argentinian and even today there are a lot of Argentinian people who speaks in pain and broken pride and resentment about the islands when our government sells thousands of hectares for little money to companies from Europe and North America for different purposes in the south of the country. @@shaunmadden7324 National pride is a powerful tool that most governments around the world use to manipulate people for their purposes. Galtieri used the war as a distraction and he sent to war teenagers who didn't even know how to use a gun. When about to lose his power all his cards were loosing hands, winning an impossible war was his only possible hand to stay at the power. In other words he was an idiot who killed both Argentinians and British and destroyed the relationship between both countries for selfish purposes at the cost of many lives. Lesson. There is no merit on national pride, we don't choose were we are born. Some wars in history were probably needed, but most wars are just for the benefit of few people who sits at a safe distance while sending thousands to die mostly for money. No matter what they tell us, there is no honor in war.

The US knew exactly what was in and around the Falklands/Malvinas as well as the British regarding Oil Reserves. They also had a mutual adversary in Argentina at the time. The US never provided any real public support to the British (in fact there was a ruse in place to project that the US wanted no part of it), but the US did provide an incredible amount of under-the-table assistance in the form of Satellite Imagery, Elint, Cryptography and a Submarine (Rumor has it Narwhal was the one) until the British Submarines HMS Spartan, HMS Splendid and HMS Conqueror came on station.

The most stupid thing that my country did, our dictator did that just to distract our people from their missery, he wanted them to think that our country was great.. it was the last try for holding up his autoritarian regime. The thing that most hurt me is that 649 of our people got killed, most of them didn't even known what war was about, most of them were kids, my dad was one of them. In argentina we celebrate the Malvinas day to claim for out soberany over the islands, but I just only take that day to remeber those kids who were sent to the islands. I will never forget, when the war was over they took the wounded men and the remaining soldiers to Buenos Aires, but they took them in Buses with it windows covered in black. Most of then would comitte suicide because the mental issues that the war left on them. It was a war that shouldn't have happened

This was a textbook example of how to fight a modern war against a peer adversary. What the Brits pulled off was incredible by any definition. It was not the British who were unprepared, it was the Argentinians. Even with no existing contingency plan for such an operation, the British due to their professionalism, training, and experience were able to quickly assemble a large force and send it halfway around the world to fight an enemy that was operating just off its own coast. The British task-force, including two carriers as well as escorting destroyers and frigates, not to mention the transport and amphibious craft, was used aggressively but not recklessly. They took losses at sea but that was all but inevitable. Naval gunfire proved extremely valuable during the landings, despite the risks associated with operating so close to shore. Same goes for the air war. Harriers flying at the very limits of their range were able to hold off much more capable fighters. The Black Buck raids, while of questionable material impact, were unprecedented in terms of logistics and were the longest ever bombing raids up to that time. The Argentinian effort by comparison, was simply half-assed for lack of a better term. They managed to land successfully against a severely outnumbered force. These initial Argentine troops were well trained marines and commandos but the troops that followed to reinforce them were conscripts. By all rights, the Argies should have been able to maintain air superiority. But the Harriers shot down enough Argentine jets that when combined with the psychological impact of Black Buck they just retreated when they could have come out on top had they pressed on. Same for the naval battle, the Brits lost more ships but the Argentine Navy lost its nerve. After the Belgrano went down, it was basically a non-factor, which is pretty insane given that the Argentine fleet included a carrier of its own plus a couple destroyers of the same class the Royal Navy employed. Had it not been sunk, the Belgrano could have caused serious problems for the troops on the ground and the rest of the Argentine Navy and air force could have put up a credible fight against the British invasion fleet. Once it came down to the ground campaign, it was all over for Argentina. The British had and still have arguably the best light infantry in the world. Overall, though Britain was obviously no longer a superpower, it was still among the most militarily capable countries in the world. Not by any means a spent force. Bottom line, if you're going to invade foreign territory, be prepared to fight for it. If it's not worth taking risks over, it's not worth it for you to invade in the first place. You know, who dares wins...

At the age of 19yrs I landed on the Falklands. At 57yrs I still re-live certain things that happened but I thought then and think now that we were right to defend ourselves and people depending on us. Stayed in the army until 1994 and saw more action but I still regard this as the last of the mud-thumper wars. Will never forget the day the white flag went up. As for the sun setting on the corner of the empire, typical American opinionated and incorrect reporting (most of their politicians were pro Argentina at the time). Have met one Argintinian who served there at the time, in the mid nineties, and we got on pretty well, as most soldiers do when the metal stops hitting the meat.

TheNighthawk00 true but that's just the way the world works and Britain had weakened considerably in that hundred years, mostly due to economic and social issues but also due to the cost of two enormous world wars, and in particular the cost of the American lend-lease of equipment and supplies. If it wasn't for that war not only would we have continued weakening and lost not only the Falklands but likely ALL our overseas territories we'd have effectively become completely at the rest of the world's mercy militarily, so thank God for the haste and stupidity of the Argentine Military Junta, you in effect and completely inadvertantly, saved Britain!

TheNighthawk00 that war acted as a wake-up call, a slap in the face, a rallying cry and it was just what we needed at just the right time. Now Britain is strong enough to actually leave the European Union and go it's own way again and have a military capable of taking on that of anyone in the world save the US, it's strongest ally who unlike back then actually treats us with begrudging respect. None of that could have happened without the Falklands War
