I really cannot listen to this song without crying. Whenever I feel really, really low or just downright awful, I know I can play a Fall Out Boy song, and I feel better. In December of last year, I was going through an extremely rough time in my life, due to bullying, and some mental issues. When I was at my absolute lowest, this song actually saved my life. The vocals, lyrics, and every little detail of the song, helped me feel calmer and made me actually feel sort of normal. I was completely alone, had no one to call a friend, but I knew the band was there for me. I have several memories of myself crying at 2am, and just playing this song or several other songs, and just getting lost, almost an escape, from listening to the music. All of a sudden, when I put on my headphones, the bullies, anxiety, hallucinations, and everyone around me went away. I felt, for the first time in a long time, a bit of joy. On December 7th, I attended a concert, and they played this song. I cried, next to hundreds of other fans, my true best friend, and my father. With the help of music, my family, and several others, I got off of self harm, found friends, and got help for myself. My entire life, was completely saved by Fall Out Boy. I know, if the band didn't exist, I would not have, after November of 2017, ever waken up again. Thanks to the band, I am alive, and getting help. Thank you, Fall Out Boy, and several other bands, artists, and family for helping save me. If you are going through and hard times in your life, know that it's worth it. You should go when you are old, and have stories to tell of all the fun adventure you had, not when you are young and say "I wish I could have gone to that concert, I wish I could pet my dog.'" Try to wake up from that state. You know that the sun will come up, everyone will wake up, and no one would be happy without you. Take your pain, and turn it into something. Paint a picture, write a song, start a movement or program in your town or city to help others who are struggling with the same issues. It will help you, and everyone around you. It gets better. There are so many people who were former heroes that want to prove that they still got it and that they are still relevant, the end for them could come at any time and they just want to be great once more, to fill up their trophy case again.

Let me explain: maybe I'm completely off, but I think this song could be interpreted as a song about the current status of the relationship between them, the fans that only want the "old" FOB and the fans that love their new stuff. The opening of the song isn't rhetorical, it's literal. A bad trip makes him (or them) re-evaluate where they stand as a group while he finds himself doing a mundane task. Then, the perspective changes: he doesn't say "my knees", he says "fall to YOUR knees, bring on the rapture" meaning that your mind is probably made up. If you think FOB is dead with their new style (an end or "rapture" of their music), your mind won't easily be changed. "Former heroes who quit too late"-it's no secret that, before their hiatus, the more time passed the less satisfaction the members of the band felt with their current positions (hence, they should have quit earlier when they were happier). They just want to make good music and be appreciated again, as seen in the next line. Now, the chorus: In the end, they wouldn't change the decisions they've made. The "best friend" is possibly fame itself. "I'll be yours"-whatever image of them you get from whatever song you like by them, they're happy to convey that image. But, in the next line, they note that they can't ignore that "when it rains, it pours" (when a band changes styles, it's hard for people to keep these images in their head), so he wants you to "stay thirsty"-if you don't like the style, fine, but keep yearning for the music and the meaning BEHIND the songs. The fan base is broken over the old vs. the new, so..."The Kid's Aren't Alright". Next stanza: they're aggressive about their new style, but they're not proud of coming off as if they're trying to overshadow their old work. "Put your curse in reverse" is them taking you on a nostalgia trip whenever you listen to an old song, but "it's our time now" (they're still moving forward and invite you to join them). "Your love is anemic"-anemia is the decrease of red blood cells carrying oxygen to keep the body alive-another reference to the fan base being at odds with each other, fans being the livelihood of the group. They still feel the "rush" like they did in the old days, what about the dead people? They're referring to themSELVES. They don't discard their old music (as mentioned before), but they aren't the same people and can't make the same music as before. In fact, the last line before the final chorus confirms such: "let your dirty sadness fill me up"-they aren't spiting their old fans, they're FEEDING off of them and anguished over the fact that they can't provide them with a symbiotic relationship. The whole song is about how you can't please everyone and can't go back home, but the memories still stick. Just my interpretation.

This is just one of those songs that makes you feel better when you're sad. I mean every Fall Out Boy song is like that for me but this one especially. All their songs make you feel less alone and I think a lot of people really needed that this year. So thanks Fall Out Boy for all your amazing music and for showing people things can get better and that you're never truly alone.
