Fall Steam Trains: Cumbres & Toltec Scenic

Come along for a spectacular fall train trip through the mountains of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado! The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad runs steam powered tourist trains on a 64 mile line between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. We'll follow some trains along the line out of Chama, where the fall colors are the most spectacular. Prime season for the Aspen trees is usually late September through early October.

My dad worked for the railways, so I have a facination for the steam engines and enjoyed the many trips across our homeland.

Recently I was writing an essay about the rise of the freight train in the golden age of steam, and I had to describe viewpoints that benefitted railroad crews, and I made a few calls to the Cumbres & Toltec, and during the fall photo charter, I got exclusive access to ride in the doghouse on C&T 489

Great! Great! Great! Loved the scenery too. And the clickerty clack as the final carriages passed. Good also to see the passengers wave to the camera.

Thanks Mike...the C&T is a great scenic railroad and worth the trip. They used to rent out the caboose for private parties...bring your own food & bev kinda thing.

BTW, that beautiful golden expanse, such as at 6:30, was called "Aspen Glow" by the people around Wild Basin of Rocky Mountain National Park when I was there in the fall of 1971. Do the Coloradans still call it that? (The folks in northern Wisconsin call Aspens "Popples" for the sound their leaves make in the breeze and the "Aspen Glow" is just as beautiful---except no steam locos!

Personally, I liked how the 489 looked back in the late 80's & Early 90's back when she didn't have the snowplow and wore a Powell 3 chime whistle. I wish she still wore the Powell 3 Chime today.

I've got to find time to come over to the Cumbres and Toltec during summer or fall. The countryside is beautiful during both times, and the double-header only adds to that

I'm saying this in quite a few railway videos..... Be great if we the viewer could have the co ordinates of the tracks both at the start and finish of the video so giving us a chance to see the locations on Google Earth as well. Just a thought.

MPT 765 487’s whistle is currently being updated I think so they put its secondary whistle on it which is complete crap

The whistle for 487 that was normally worn in the 80s and 90s is that still at C&TS or has it been stolen?? Just curious.

Nicholas Medovich I believe it is stored because I saw a video that was filmed a few years ago and I believe it has the same whistle you are talking about. If I’m not thinking of the same one, I bet it was stolen, but to my knowledge no whistles have ever been stolen from the C&TS but I could be wrong

What dates was this shot. How long are the Aspens in color? Is it just a few weeks?

Roughly October 5th, 2016. It can greatly depend on the elevation but the colors don't last much more than a week or two. Sometimes they are earlier and sometimes they are a later, depending on temperatures and other conditions that year.

Hi mike I was wondering if you could Railfan the Tweetsie Railroad Ghost Train in blowing rock North Carolina. The train is running until Halloween night and is still running now. Plus the locomotive is actually their normal steam locomotive decorated for Halloween. If you could that would be amazing!

@CoasterFan2105 every one hear from tells me that you have to ride a bus back. but in the video people are still on the train. can you ride back?

You can either ride from one end to the other with a bus return or you can go half way and back on the train both ways. The reason being that the line is sufficiently long enough that it would be hard to do a full round trip in one day.

Mike, this is truly superb, spectacular footage shot at a particularly attractive time of the year with the fall colours at their best! These little 2-8-0s really do pack a punch when digging in against the grade, and 64 miles gives plenty of scope to see and hear them in action. Tell me, is the flanged top on the chimney stack some sort of spark arrestor? I watch all of your top quality videos but, as I'm a big steam fan, I usually only comment on the steam vids. I recently bought a Samsung 55", 4k tv, with full HD and 4k standard and it really does justice to your work. Hats off to you for yet another top notch video production Mike! Jack Killeen similar. IMO it is a little off. But it is still great. They are both ATSF 6 Chimes so that’s why.
