The sad thing is this is 100% accurate. I've seen stretches of highway where I live that are absolutely fine, where there's no apparent faults with the utilities, and you will still have months of road works as the whole road is ploughed up and resurfaced. Meanwhile actual rough patches of road are ignored. The only reason it's done is to justify the budgets.

Over something that in reality is batshit crazy. I'm not sure if I fully understand why, but I found this scene heartwarming. Just some dude and a kid "innocently" exploding stuff together. Very underrated movie. The more I grow, the more I see that this movie is todays reality.
@MkeKen673 жыл бұрын
Don't think this movie looks like "today's reality." The movie delves into the psyche of a man having a complete meltdown. Almost everything in it is shown from his warped perspective. The only redeeming thing* about "d-fens" is when he calls the guy at the army surplus store a "sick, sick asshole." He was totally right about that, and in today's reality, that type of "sick, sick asshole" is all over the Internet. So, maybe that part of the movie was prophetic. (* I guess the other redeeming thing about "d-fens" is that he is trying to get a birthday gift to his daughter.)
@christopherneufelt89713 жыл бұрын
@@MkeKen67 Good day Ken. I had the priviledge to live in a ghetto and the behaviour of "meltdown" was over the place. I believe that nothing has changed since (before 25 years), except that today the people shout you without to directly get ungry at you -which I consider a cultural decadence. In very developed societies (USA is not a developed society), I would have agreed with you, but then again, I live in Switzerland, and I can walk at night without fear of losing anything.
@MkeKen673 жыл бұрын
@@christopherneufelt8971 - Well, "meltdown" is a not-so-specific term I was using to describe what d-fens individually is going through. I highly doubt that even in a "ghetto," melting down is a constant thing for much of the population. Sure, there's violent action and reaction, like with revenge killings and what-not, but not necessarily a lone individual going out and attacking everything he sees wrong with "contemporary society." The character, d-fens, is not living in a ghetto, at any rate, but, rather, Joel Schumacher's amped up version of L.A. at a certain time in its history. All of the tension is heightened on purpose to try to put us inside d-fens's head, which is a rather unsettling place to be. I would say it's meant to be more metaphor than reality, kind of like the atmosphere created in Natural Born Killers.

john hoskins See, you do that because you're not intelligent. Call people names and blame them and undermine those who do not agree with you. Can't argue with idiots, I guess. They put you down to their level, and then beat you with their experience! That's not my quote, by the way.
@christianroy56634 жыл бұрын
This scene speaks to me because of a slightly similar experience. Many years ago when I lived in a shitty apartment complex that was one of several owned by a well off, evil, penny pinching, piece of shit of a woman... our air conditioning went out one summer. When my mother made a call to see about getting it fixed, the bitch told my mom that we shouldn't worry about it because we can't afford air conditioning anyway. We should just open a window or use a fan. Eventually some repairmen came over and my mom saw one of them banging a hammer on the side of the air conditioner on the roof. She saw through his bullshit of pretending to actually be doing something and she eventually got him to confess that he was doing nothing at all.

Once in a while, a film, gets made that is profound on so many levels that it grows in its relativity. This film, when I saw it bored me as I wanted non-stop action. But over the years, the philosophy behind it has stayed with me & its now a phenomenon. Powerful scene tbh because although he insights violence, he is clearly disturbed at how the kids have been affected by glorifying it in films, tv & news. We have become a society of violence. Under De-construction.

the most absolute genius part of this scene is Michael Douglas turning to look at the kid saying "cool man" and shaking his head as if to say "today's youth" while he's the one shooting a bazooka on the 110.

This is so true. I worked as a janitor in a school and i saw that there was very expensive television in a coffee room that was the size of my bathroom. So the school doesnt get the same amount of money every year if they dont spend it.But i can assure you that that plasma tv was listed as "teaching material" It didnt teach no kids, it was enterteinment for the teachers who really didnt giva a fuck.

For me one of the most effective parts of this scene is that the worker doesn't immediately concede when he sees the gun - he still tries to double down that there is a problem, even if he pretends to be uncertain about it. It takes more urging for him to flat out say nothing is wrong. Being right/justified was more important at first than being alive.
