BREAKING NEWS (9/20/23) The Varjo Aero is NOW $990! This is the new standard price of the headset and not a promotional offer. This gives the Aero an even more compelling cases for purchase. Again, unless you really want wireless or that extra vertical FOV, the Aero is a fantastic option over the Pimax Crystal.

$890 for Black Friday. I'm tempted, but apparently you can't use it unless you also buy a controller and base station... :-/ There's not combo kit so you have to buy from a company that has put one together, or source your own (I think?) It's competition for my money is an ultra wide curved desktop gaming monitor... something I wouldn't have to take off and put back on my head every time I sat down.

Glad to see you back into the Aero and making VR content! Your first Varjo Aero review was one of my favorite Aero videos that helped me decide to finally pull the trigger on the Aero. With that said, I purchased the Varjo Aero the week of Black Friday for $400 off, and I was still super skeptical since I didn't know anybody personally with the HMD. But man oh man, the Aero is worth every penny and then some. Even 7 months later, every time I put on the Aero, which is daily for hours on end, is just a magical, flawless, top notch experience. Unlike yourself, I purchased the Studioform Comfort kit for the Aero the same day (which took nearly a month to arrive) as well as some lens protectors with blue light filter from VR Optician. I don't need corrective eye wear, but I couldn't fathom using a device that is so expensive with the risk of ruining the lenses when there was a way to protect them. Those thankfully came the within a week, just like the Aero. Like I said, the Aero has been a magical experience. Unlike most of it's users, I am not a flight sim or driving sim kinda guy. I just really really like VR and enjoy experiencing all aspects of it. With nearly 200 VR games, every single game is a brand new experience using the Aero compared to a Quest or Index. Games I had played hundreds of hours looked and felt so much better inside the Aero. It is something that at the time was a lot to invest in but I can say 7 months later, I would buy the Aero again today, full priced, even with the Crystal and Bigscreen Beyond soon available. Not only are the visuals top notch, but the build quality of the HMD is unlike any other headset. It looks, feels and is high quality from top to bottom. Even the software, like you mentioned, is fantastic, and they still manage to somehow improve with each update. Varjos customer support is also by far the best from any VR company around. I'm amazed at how direct they are with their customers and how great they treat us. I measured my FOV using the VRHMD Test and mine is 108 horizontal and 78 vertical for those that are interested. I'm at a 64-65 IPD. Have used it with a buzzed head and hair down to my shoulders. It pairs perfectly with my Sennheiser open back headphones and the Antlion wireless mod mic for the ultimate audio experience in the ultimate VR HMD. The Aero was my dream HMD that I never thought I'd end up buying one and now that I've spent nearly 700 hours using the HMD, I wouldn't trade the experiences for anything. Well worth the cost and I can't wait to live stream using it again tonight! It is great to see you back in the Aero. Cheers!

Hey Farmer!!! Thanks for writing such a detailed comment, I'm glad I didn't steer you wrong. It is reassuring to know that my thoughts on the Aero are shared by so many in the community. I agree 100% about the Customer Service!!! Varjo as a company are very Customer Friendly and certainly one of the best in the VR industry. Makes sense because they came up through the Business to Business ranks and you have to have good customer support if you want to keep customers like Boeing etc. Overall I've never had any buyer's remorse from my Aero purchase even though it was a lot of money up front. Seems like you feel the same.

You "ain't" lying brother, lol. I'm having a blast with my Aero! Currently enjoying the Flysimware Cessna 414AW (incredible payware aircraft) and I continue to be impressed with the headset. Best VR HMD out of the three I've owned, starting with the CV1. I had a weird issue that required me to login every time I started Varjo Base, which was extremely annoying. Took Varjo several weeks to come up with a solution, but they eventually solved my problem. The issue was related to a Windows setting that changed my MAC address on every bootup. "Random Hardware Address". I was instructed to turn that setting OFF and reboot my PC. Weird issue that never happened with any other software I've run, but all is well now. They said that my case actually helped them improve their software to mitigate future issues for other users. 😅

Anyway on another topic, I'm having a blast flying my Cirrus Vision Jet in MSFS2020. I love that little plane... great glass cockpit and the view is fantastic all around. Plus it is a JET so has some power to go places. That was my first payware aircraft and it was well worth it for me. Appreciate you watching our stuff Redtail.

@@GYGOtv Not really sure if I can blame Windows updates, because I'm a tinkerer and I'm constantly tweaking things to improve performance. It's possible that I did something or applied some settings that turned that switch on at some point. The thing is, no other software seems affected by it, so if it's required to be off by a particular base application or program, it should be known and listed by the developer. The fact that they seemed clueless for weeks, appears to be a lack of proper beta testing. I'd think that if a setting is required, the app would at least give you a warning. The requirement to login at all in order to use a piece of equipment (especially this expensive) is a big turnoff as far as I'm concerned! I made that known to them (which they ignored). I have other expensive hardware in my setup (Realsimgear G1000 for example) and none of it requires a login/internet connection to use! So I have a real issue with that and I let them know. That Vision Jet sounds like a winner. I might have to check it out. Problem is, I have more planes than I have time to enjoy, including DCS modules 😂
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
@@redtailpilot Well I'm glad they found the issue, I know I've had problems with many other company's software that never gets resolved and they just pass the buck to Windows or something else. It sucks that it took weeks but at least they fixed it eventually. I hear you on too many planes and modules... I routinely look at my Steam Library and go "Huh I bought that a long time ago and have never installed it". First world problems I guess, right?

A really great review with the aero 👍thank you very much. I love my aero too and its really the best headset what I have ! Unfortunately I got some problems after the last Varjo update and the new Nvidia drivers: Sometimes the Aero loose the connection and in the Varjo software I read “no headset available”, than have to restart all and than it works again. Sometimes the inside menue failed too. A little bit enjoying and will sent a diagnostic report to the friendly Varjo support. But..wow ! What you said ? You will make a motion compensation video with Jeff for us ??? OMG 😮 its amazing ! I can’t wait. Looking forward to this event ! Best greets, Toby

Thanks Toby, appreciate the comment. Yes, I've been working on the Motion Comp stuff for a while now... I had it running good in SteamVR but everyone wants to use OpenXR now because of the performance gain (which I totally understand and want too). Anyway, I've been running into lots of issues getting things to work in OpenXR, but am sorting through it. I think I'm getting close and I'm excited to share all the details with you guys! Stay tuned, I'm as eager to get it out as you guys are to watch it! As for the Varjo Base software issues, I haven't had any lately, hopefully Varjo can sort them out for you. I know the new Nvidia drivers have been problematic but hopefully that is getting better too. We will see.

I can perfectly adjust it to my head, I can look around in the cockpit and it sits tight, I can look everywhere and its clear, the software works without flaws (on my computer), its easy to change resoutions, the eye tracking and foveated rendering (with the OpenXR Mod) works great. I even like that I use my own headphones. By now I really dont have anything to complain about with the Aero and I think the level of perfection justifies the price. (And I dont think Pimax will ever get to that level of perfection but they can proof me wrong) I still would like to some day have higher res displays and more fov (for me there still is some tiny screen door, there is a distance between pixels) but the computer performance doesnt allow that currently anyway, I would only update when my PC can do 90fps on multiplayer servers in DCS and thats already more than one processor generation away with the Aero.

Thanks for the comment, ya and for me the Pimax Crystal was 100x worse. You might try that Studioform Creative balancing kit 2:48 Basically it is counterweight to the back strap of the headset and it takes some of the pressure off your cheeks. Obviously it makes the headset heavier, but might also make it more comfortable for you. Might be worth a try?

When I got my Aero I first had to try with glasses and didn’t like how cumbersome it was so immediately sent vroptician my numbers I’ve been using them with my G2 and it’s a must. I also don’t like how the aero sits on my cheekbones either it’s a very fine adjustment to get the Aero right as far as comfort and honestly the G2 is way more comfortable. I’m searching for a thicker face mask pad but hard to find a company that makes them for the Aero. Still trying to get use to this Aero I can see the outline of the lenses and inset when I have it on so need to find the sweet spot. All in all it’s a pretty good product just not as comfortable as everyone said it was.

Hi Mako, yes I still prefer the overall comfort of the G2 for sure, but I can wear my Aero for hours. The Studioform Creative Balance Kit also comes with an overhead strap that might work in your situation? I just didn't want to use it because I already have bulky earphones and I was feeling like it was getting too much on my head. Anyway, I used VROptician too and I can just see the outline of the lenses when I look for them but in use I barley notice. Good luck with getting your Aero where you want it, I know I messed with the fit of mine for a long time until I got good visuals and comfort... but it is possible! Thanks for the comment.

Since losing my Rift S to controller issues (that Meta weren't willing to replace...so Amazon had to just refund the whole thing) I've been missing VR for years and am hoping to get back in but it's such a tough call on which headset to go with! Quest 3 looks good as an all-rounder but as someone who isn't fussed about wireless/standalone and will mostly use it for PCVR, think this and the Index Base Stations/Controllers are the way to go for PCVR at the moment, even at ~£1400? As much as I'd prefer the Index 2 I have no idea how long we'll be waiting and the itch to get back into VR is too strong! Great videos, helping narrow down my choices a lot!
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 10 ай бұрын
You are welcome! Obviously the Aero and the Crystal are the best choices out there and hopefully my videos can help you choose the one right for you. The Quest 3 is a pretty good experience too so far so depending if you can tolerate the encode/decode part of it instead of the native Display Port input, it might be an ok choice too. I will say that any of these headsets (even the Quest 3) will likely amaze you coming from the Rift S (except the non-OLED screens nowadays) :( It really comes down to comfort vs. image quality with the Quest 3 on the low side and the Pimax Crystal on the High side, with the Aero right in the middle. Please let me know if you have any other questions about these that I can help you with. Also if you want to help the channel with your purchase, I have affiliate links for any of these headsets in the description. Thanks for watching!

I use prescription inserts for all my headsets (past and present), I got my first ones in 2017 for the OG Vive and loved it. The only real downside is when troubleshooting VR stuff. Take the glasses off, put on the HMD, take off the HMD, put on the glasses and do some PC tweaking on the monitor, take glasses off, put on the HMD, repeat many times until the problem is resolved. This part is annoying, but when everything is working well and the visual clarity of having inserts is a game changer. My Sim Racing HMD is the Reverb G2v2, I love this HMD (Can't afford a Aero or Crystal), the clarity of this thing is amazing, I also use the G2 for room scale VR using my Valve knuckles (See OpenVR Space Calibrator) since the G2 controllers are pathetic at best.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
LOL Jack, yes that is exactly the thing I'm having to get used to also! It's very strange going from good vision in the headset to POOF I'm blind (I guess the same happens when I take my glasses off but it is a new experience with the HMD for sure). G2 is still a great headset, it just surprised me after getting used to it again how much that edge to edge clarity really makes... at least for me. Thanks for the comment.
@jackr.749
@jackr.749 Жыл бұрын
@@GYGOtv Agreed on edge to edge clarity, the g2 can be decent in this respect but you have to get those optics really close to your eyes and be perfectly into that sweet spot. I got a Pico 4 a little over a month ago, I can't say I'm impressed, and that's all due to being a stand alone headset with streaming PCVR, no Direct display port goodness! So the compression kills off the gains of the extra resolution over a Quest 2 or lower res HMDs. :(
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
@@jackr.749 Agreed... the small FOV is the biggest dislike I have for the G2. Interesting about the Pico4... I wondered how that looked as I have never tried one. Sounds like it was good I didn't buy one right away. Appreciate the comments.
@jackr.749
@jackr.749 Жыл бұрын
@@GYGOtv Regarding the Pico 4, don't get me wrong, it's very similar to the Quest 2 just a little higher res, for some stand alone VR it's great, but for myself (being very fussy about clarity in Sim Racing) it just doesn't cut it for me. going from a G2 to the Pico is a fairly serious downgrade regarding clarity (compression vs none) especially in distant scenes in VR, other cars further up the track, trackside signs and so on, in this respect, the G2 blows the doors off the Pico 4. If someone is coming from something like a Rift CV1 or even Rift-S, then yes, the Pico 4 will look amazing to them for sim racing. I'm just fussy, obviously you are as well due to having a Aero (lucky guy! LOL).

@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 11 ай бұрын
Hi stevedoetsch, Sounds to me like you don't have the headset quite centered with your eyes. The sweetspot now has to do with distortions and Chromatic Aberration (CA) vs blurry visuals in old Fresnel lenses. I can see some slight CA when I'm in a menu but don't notice any when I'm in a sim or a game. If you haven't seen my original review video I talk about this in depth kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNOXm7GB0dyuhZ8.html Just FYI I've spent 3+ hours at a time in the headset without any eye strain or sleepiness so again I think it is how you have it positioned that is at least causing some of the problem. Hi Andrew, you will certainly see a big difference from the G2! The biggest thing is the edge to edge clarity, it just makes everything feel so much more real. If I remember correctly you have to install SteamVR along with the Varjo Base, but honestly the setup was very straight forward following Varjo's guide and I had no issues at all getting up and running. Also, the Aero will do either OpenXR or OpenVR and you can turn them on and off separately in the Varjo Base software. You can also use tools like the openxrtoolkit as well. I'm assuming you don't have those coming from the quest 2? If you don't want to spend that kind of money and already have lots of Quest games, the Quest 3 will be coming out very soon and might be a better value for you. It isn't as good as the Crystal or the Aero but also a lot more affordable at about $500. Let me know more of what you are interested in and your budget and I can probably help you more.

@@GYGOtv thanks for the response I have the money to spend so I might go for a crystal Cause I like sim racing but I also like vr shooters so I guess I’ll see how the quest 3 is and get one of those if there good for games where I move around

@@codyhuber4252Perfect, Meta Connect is only a week away so you won't have to wait long for the official announcement ( www.metaconnect.com/en/home ). If you like shooters and want to be wireless, then the Crystal would be the correct choice vs. the Aero. Do you have a lot of Steam games or are they all through Meta?

@@codyhuber4252Well then I think it comes down to how good an experience to you want to upgrade to? If you want what is currently the best, pick up a Crystal, p.s. feel free to use my affiliate and $20 off coupon if you do :) pimax.com/?ref=GYGO Code "GYGO20". If you just want an upgraded experience than the Quest 3 will probably be your best bet. The Quest 3 will likely have better controller tracking, but the Crystal will have the best visuals. Hope that helps.

Which GPU do you recommend as minimum for the Varjo Aero?
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 8 ай бұрын
Well that is a bit of a loaded question... I always recommend buying as high end a video card as you can afford (keep in mind the Varjo only works with Nvidia based cards). It really depends on the experience you want to have. For general games I found a 3060ti was probably the minimum where you could still get a good experience without having to turn most graphics down really bad. For high end flight sims etc. even the 4090's are struggling to run them at full resolution/full graphics so really I'd say MINIMUM is a 3080 and then you will still probably have to turn things down to get good frame rates on these high end titles. As a benchmark for anyone reading this, the Aero runs about the same (actually slightly better) than the HP Reverb G2 so you can expect the same performance if that is the headset you are coming from. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching.

The big problem with the Crystal is Pimax's history, and that the headset hasn't really been time tested so hopefully the build quality is there. I know people are talking about the motor that moves the lenses for auto-ipd sounds too weak so I hope the headset holds up over time. That being said, it does sound like it is achieving much of what they promised with the good fov, colors and mostly local dimming sounding really enticing to me. Please let us know what you think if you get yours soon... I'm intrigued.

@@justaguydoinstuff fact is, you're not wearing a head mounted display. you're wearing a HELMET. your neck is going to be loose as hell like one of those worn out n64 joy sticks. every time you run over a pebble in the road you will look like a bobble head. And this thing just started shipping so how can it be ALL NEW shipments? Makes sense when you don't think about it. anywho, not my money.

Hi Charleschilders2041, no not really because I was more focused on the experience vs. the price. What I hope it does is allow more people who are on a budget to enjoy this amazing experience. If you watch my Pimax comparison to the Aero ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJqHlMKp3NfJd2g.html ), you know I only recommend the Crystal in a half-dozen cases vs. the Aero and that even holds more true now with the price reduction.
