Went out to pull my lobster traps. Ended up practicing kayak reentry. Felt the kayak starting to roll a little too much. I decided to bail out of kayak before I lost all my gear. Didn't lose anything! I had just reconfigured my motor setup, nothing but problems. Surge was 2 feet every 3 seconds, and I wasn't setup correctly for the waves that hit me. Water temp was 50 degrees. Kokatat Drysuit kept me dry, NRS Raku kept me afloat! Yeti kept the coffee nice and hot!

Definitely would've turned back, or tried for shelter. But it's not always an option. It Looked like the boat was cat walking the current, and those weird angled side waves. It's Happened to us all. Glad you're safe bro! I have a 2023' Hoodoo impulse 120, Fin drive, I run the new PP 768 Bixpy on my gravity rudder. I also have my Xi3 on my bow. now mounted. I've never flipped, or come close to flipping, on this kayak yet. I'm 5ft 7" 161 lbs. I Can walk all over her. 🙏 🌊 🎣

Yea it was definitely a weird day. I’ve never even come close since. That was the one time my motor was rear mounted. Since then its been in a custom dry hill. Heck yea that Hoodoo sounds like a sweet setup! I’m a lot heavier. 240 and just under 6ft. I can stand on it in a lake but not the ocean.

I own a bigwater 132. It's stable until it's not and it happens quick. You guys that go out in the ocean in 50* water in a kayak are insane. I'll stick to the lakes and ponds where it belongs. Glad you're okay.

Thats your opinion, water is water till it gets violent, rivers and large lakes can get rough…..know your limits, prepare for the worst. Kayak flips, turn it over get back in.

At least you were prepared with the dry suit and pdf! My first kayak experience I sunk one (8' sundolphin). I was 50lbs too big, too many waves and a missing rear plug. I realized it was sinking and rolled out. It caught enough air to stay just under the water so I pulled it back to shore, drained it and went back to camp. I just bought the bigwater 132 and on our lake it is incredibly stable. I can stand up in it with boat waves and wind. Not sure if I'm brave enough to try the ocean with it.

That’s awesome. Yea I can stand, but it has to be pretty smooth for me to like it. I’m 230lbs. Rear plug had me laughing so hard. I almost sunk my first boat that way. Who knew boats had holes in em! You got any cool modifications on the 132 yet that I don’t?

@@brandondulle No I don't yet. I picked it up Saturday and went straight to the lake, only to find they gave me the wrong drive, so I had to paddle it the whole weekend. I caught about a dozen fish so was still a good time. Next time out will be weekend after Father's day. I watched your motor install and plan to do something similar in the future.

Yea I can’t stress center of gravity enough. Get the weight below the waterline, it’ll act like a keel. If not it’ll be a bobber and roll. That was my issue.

First move when winds change and it's going to get rough. Lower the damn seat to its low ride position.ower your center of gravity.

Was the motor not acting right? By the looks of it the current was coming in different directions

So this is when I tipped. I tried to make a system that would allow me to have both motor and pdl in. The motor was on the back and the pdl was in the slot. It felt super unstable immediately, but I didn’t think it would be a problem. I really wanted it to work. So I ventured out. Thought it would be amazing to be able to still pedal and motor. The pdl raised the center of gravity and the motor trim was set with a bolt, that’s what I fixed when I tipped. It was set a little high. I should’ve went with my gut and turned around but I had to at least try it. I went back to my drypod setup and have never looked back. I can pull the motor out for beaching it or even to unwind lobster trap rope if tangled. I think the icing on the cake was my big head swaying back and forth like a fool (what can I say I was just enjoying it) and the kayak paddle getting sucked under. It was a combination of all of the above. I made the split second to jump as I have seen to many videos of people trying to recover broken gear after capsizing. Didn’t lose anything besides a day on the water. If you do a motor build, the drypod is the way to go!

Sooooo should I not get this kayak? I wanted old town because it’s known for its stability especially at 36” wide, you’d think you really couldn’t tip it at all…
@brandondulle
@brandondulle 3 ай бұрын
No, the Oldtown 132 is the one to get imo! This kayak is extremely capable. What I think people may be missing for context. Go pro doesn’t give good wave depth. It was 20lb motor way above the water with my pdl drive in motor on, a side wave, and my fat head rocking to the beat of the ocean kayak paddle scooped in. Winds were blowing way too much. I just wanted to reset my lobster traps though. Perfect storm. Yes I did choose to bail as I felt it hit that roll point. No I didn’t plan it. Probably would’ve put my iPhone away instead of a cord to my chest. There’s a line on a kayak, if you pass it you tip I’ve seen it happen passing rods/drinks off.

@@brandondulle yeah. I’ve flipped in a kayak. I’m in the market looking at hobie PA the 132 big water maybe even a hoodoo impulse. I fish mostly big open ocean waters. And I’m trying to get something that won’t tip easy but has enough speed to get me where I need to be. Preferably a cheaper option than the hobie or 132 but if I have to spend the extra I will. The issue I saw with the 132 was 0 storage, the deck is small for a kayak 36” wide. That’s another thing that’s making me sort of shy away from the 132. The back also has very small tank well
@brandondulle
@brandondulle 2 ай бұрын
Yep can’t disagree on the lack of storage. Luckily I’m not trying to store much. Rear is small yes.
@Tyler-rm6pw

If you want stability get the topwater 120 but of course with stability you lose speed. For speed get the 132 for stability get the 120. Soooooo many people flip the 132.
@brandondulle
@brandondulle Ай бұрын
@Tyler-rm6pw the 120 couldn’t do what this does offshore though. It’d toss you off. You need a deep v to cut the waves. I’ve only tipped once.
