The lack of finer details is probably down to the fact you'll never normally see them as anything but shapes in the sky. The fact they even have a top half to their model is honestly strange, since, again, you'd never see it. That said, your redesign looks great.

It has a pretty obvious defensive turret blister at the center rear of the wing. It makes perfect sense with the early cold war inspiration as many bombers of the era abondoned most defensive armament in favour of a single heavily armed rear turret, see aircraft like the B-52 or Tu-95
@spydingo
@spydingo Жыл бұрын
I actually think the center rear blister was a design artifact from one of the models used as a base for this design. The wiki calls out the K-7 as a reference bird and it has a push engine mounted there. I agree with you that if Fallout history progressed like our history, there wouldn't be much point in the armaments, since by this stage engagements should never really be in visual range. I'd argue though, that from the designs we have seen so far, with the stingray deluxe, and the lack of any AA equipment (unless you count the missile carrier from Fallout 4's intro as a SAM launcher) suggests the universe is operating in the WWII cinematic dogfighting type of paradigm. At least that's my take.

About the vertibird interceptors. I think these bombers are supposed to be much bigger than they're portrayed and fly much higher too, small size and low altitude could be just a consequence of engine limitations.

Really? This is your favorite Fallout vehicle? I'd never have guessed that! I'm glad I did it justice, I was worried with so little to go off of that I'd be able to make a good video. I'm pretty proud of how it ended up though. That would be a great use for that design element, since it doesn't really seem to have one and would help remedy my biggest con. Interestingly enough, the wiki calls out the Kalinin K-7 as the inspiration for this model and it features a pusher engine mount that does seem eerily similar in design to that element. That's about the only thing that matches up as far as I'm concerned though, so I left it out of the video.

Now, I think one real world plane that should have been mention is the Heinkel He 111z. Which was the twin-fuselage version of the Heinkel He 111 bomber. Now, the Heinkel He 111z was actually not intended as a bomber, but a tow plane for transport gliders. There is a reason why did not become a popular bomber. The F-82 Twin Mustang did however have a pretty good record, unlike most twin designs. So the concept can work. It was still a specialist. So as much as I like twin-fuselage planes, it seldom there is a reason for them and the reasons tend to be niche.

I presume the reason why the Vertibirds don't try to intercept the Dual Dragons is because Vertibirds weren't actually there in the historical battle (and, indeed, wouldn't be on any battlefield until 2072 - five years after the battle of Anchorage). Evidently, General Chase was willing to fudge the numbers by letting the Americans have Vertibirds, but (presumably) the Chinese having had bomber support in the Alaskan theatre was well-known enough that he couldn't allow his simulated double to use them as effectively as a real general might have.

The reason it doesn't have any defensive armaments is probably because they based the design off the idea of Jet Bombers, which actually don't normally have defensive weapons. I know their are a lot few of them on War Thunder and they use flares and speed for defense since missiles are their main worry at such a high rate of speed.
@Cythil
@Cythil Жыл бұрын
There are a few jet bombers with defensive turrets. But long gone are the days of the B-17s flying fortress setup with lot of guns everywhere. The B-52 used to have a rear gun, but it was deactivated. And like you rightly point out, such defensive armaments is considered a thing of the past. If you ever get a jet fighter so close to you, something have gone horribly wrong, for both sides. Since that jet fight should have shot you down with its missiles. And you should not have been in the area to being with. Now, the problem a bit with War Thunder is that it does not really do many big bomber jets post WWII. Understandably because they do not really fit in to the scope of the sort of warfare that is in War Thunder. Indeed, some would say that WWII bombers are an ill fit in War Thunder (though I actually like bombers. I will however agree with people who say they're not handled the best in the game.) Attack aircraft and smaller bombers do however work pretty well. But the best of those can also do a bit of a multirole mission. Even the A-10 that really do not like flying in contested airspace can still bite back if needed. But pure bombers become free meal for fights in the game. Which illustrate why turrets became almost pointless as defence.

I am pretty sure they carried a very hefty payload on a certain october morning in 2077 Here they serve more in a tactical role the way i see it, they wanted to take out the americans without causing excessive damage to the infrastructure of Anchorage in order to keep the oil flowing wich would negate the use of large conventional or even nuclear munitions But i personally like to think that the bomber fleet spotted over the bering strait on october 23rd 2077 (mentioned in the switchboards DIA terminal in fallout 4)was a large formation of these planes with large strategic nukes trapped to their middle wing
@spydingo
@spydingo Жыл бұрын
The not wanting to do infrastructure damage thought also helps to justify why the bombers couldn't hit targets unless given the exact coordinates by the listening post. As far as we know, the anchorage Bomber is the only option the Chinese had to sortie, so that seems like a safe bet to me.

@z3r0_35

This thing's wacky as hell. This plane also reminds me of a German aircraft from World War II: the Heinkel He 111Z "Zwilling". The story behind this is pretty interesting, but the short version is that in around 1941 the Germans had this massive transport glider, the Me 321. The problem was it was so big that no single plane could tow it aloft, you either needed two He 111s or three Bf 110s flying in tight formation to tow it into the air when fully loaded - anyone who's actually flown planes in tight formation will tell you just how dangerous this is even WITHOUT cables behind your planes attached to a heavily-loaded glider. The proposed solution to fix this? Take two He 111H-6 airframes, and weld them together by the wings side by side with a fifth engine inserted in the middle, and use it to tow the Me 321. Ultimately it proved unnecessary when the Germans did the sensible thing and just put engines on the Me 321, creating the Me 323. Consequently, only a few prototypes of the He 111Z were ever built (with all being used operationally but none surviving the war); while bomber and recon variants were considered, it was too slow and its range was too short compared to more promising projects like the Me 264 and He 177. Yeah, I know, overthinking a problem and developing an overly complicated solution (before somebody inevitably points out the simple solution) is practically Germany's national sport.

Believe it or not, if the aileron is directly behind the center wing, that will cause the bomber to be a bit unstable and hard to control due to some complicated math about air pressures that I hardly understand. But the main thing is that planes like the P-38 have their ailerons slightly higher than the center wing relatively speaking in order to help the aileron generate lift and actually function as an aileron

Fun fact, China actually was able to get ahold of ten Tu-4's in 1953. There are two surviving examples of the Chinese Tu-4 one of which was turned into an AEW system. The other surviving example is shown to have some form of unmanned drone slung under the wings. Interestingly, the Chinese military fitted all of their Tu-4s with more powerful turboprop engines. The aircraft are painted with the same white as seen in the game, only missing the red strip on the leading edge of the craft.

One big benefit for a warplane having two separated fuselages is it would be less likely the pilots in both cockpits could be incapacitated at the same time, like from a flak shell exploding or a machine gun burst from an enemy fighter, allowing the plane to likely be able to still carry out it's mission. This would benefit a bomber most of all as they were known for taking alot of damage around the target area where the enemy would often focus their AA firepower. If you look at survivor bias diagrams of WW2 era bombers you can see that damage to the engines and cockpits were the most likely cause of a lost plane, so double the engines = less likely the plane will be lost and same logic with the cockpits. We also know from the fighter pilots themselves that they would target the cockpit in a very fast headon pass to limit the amount of time the bombers defensive armament could fire back. But in modern day combat... you could give the bomber 20 cockpits and one missiles fired from 40 Km away is still taking it out instantly so I think its time is up atleast for warplanes.

With the advent of laser weaponry in Fallout, there is no really good reason why bombers shouldn't have a few defensive weapons present to defend against incoming missiles and enemy aircraft. With significantly less computer power needed to have one hit compared to a gun system all you'd need is a fast enough gimballing system,a radar capable of picking up incoming missiles,and enough power to fry an incoming SAM or A2A missile. Same with a fighter coming in to use guns. Given a protectron with civilian grade sensor hardware inside of it can hit a man sized target at a decent distance (even if it takes a few shots), one with military grade sensors hooked up to something like a gatling laser with the sole job of "shoot the incoming missile" should be able to effectively protect a bomber against an incoming A2A or SAM. With a few extra to cover for blind spots. This might actually explain why most of the fighter aircraft we see lack missiles too. The advent of military laser technology might actually have been the partial death of military airpower in Fallout's timeline too. Before the lack of fuel started to set in,its fully possible that earlier generations of laser weaponry where developed and deployed as anti aircraft/missile systems. While not as compact as say a AER-12 Laser Rifle,these theoretical early generation systems might have still been capable of sweeping the skies of fast moving aircraft and even standoff munitons. Given that stealth aircraft didn't really become a viable thing until after computer hardware surpassed its fallout counterparts,laser emplacements coupled with beyond visual range SAM sites likely made air operations suicidal affairs outside of low intensity/counterinsurgency operations. Which given how the Chinese are depicted in operation anchorage makes these bombers fit pretty well. Cheap, old designs enhanced just enough to increase the range because the PLAAF doesn't expect them to be coming back home after using sheer numbers to overwhelm the US AA laser defenses. Its likely why the US bombers seem so obselete with the massive B-52 esque design seen at Megaton (this is minus the B-29 in FNV, thats just an oversight on obsidian's part), Strategic Air Command likely also did the math and decided that either the first round of ICBMs would be enough to break the Chinese air defense grid or that the bombers would have to basically get through on sheer numbers alone to have a hope of hitting any important Chinese targets. And given that most of the US side of the resource wars was spent bombing poorer countries that didn't want General Atomics/Posedion Energy strip mining their country and paying pennies on the dollar for their resources (if at all), or occupied Mexico or Canada, they really didn't need to be much more advanced then a 1950s bomber. That all being said it doesn't excuse the stupidity that is the Stingray Deluxe Military Variant's design. The CIA/Enclave/Vault Tec must have been dosing Lockheed Martian/Northrop Grumman's engineers with DMT and Meth when they made that one.

If you want a more Soviet based aircraft (Copied by the Chinese) the H-5 would be a good pick. It's copied from the Soviet IL-28 jet bomber, which would also retain the "boxy" aesthetic the FO3 Chinese bomber has. Not to mention that the H-5 was also nuclear capable in a separate variant as well. Also on another note, It could be speculated that the Chinese bombers did have fighters off the map. Being that the Xian-85 fighter is mentioned in New Vegas, and that if heavy bombers are being used to such an extent in Anchorage, the fighters could be patrolling farther out to maintain Air Superiority against any US jet fighters. I feel like if the Xian-85 fighter was shown it would resemble a MiG-19 or 21.

I think a big part of why it's lacking so many details is both the era the game came out and thus model limitations.. but also the fact that.. let's be real; they never expect you to see them as more than just small shapes in the sky. So it's more than likely they simply didn't bother modeling n rendering aspects of the craft you simply wouldn't see without console commands. If they ever remake the Anchorage simulation in Fallout 76? I'd imagine they'd be way more detailed.

Doesn't stop me from wanting to see what they would have done with the design if it was more readily accessible by the carrier. That would be really neat! They already did a pretty good job fixing up the APC in 76, so there is plenty of precedent.

@@spydingo Maybe we'll get to see more of the old designs updated when the Atlantic City update drops for 76. Big coastal city, good place for another carrier maybe with some planes on it. 'Rivet City 2.0; now with actual textures!"

I just wish we knew the size of the bomber compared to the tiny model we get in game, was it a heavy bomber? A tactical bomber? did it fly from china to alaska or was there a nearby base? If its a medium bomber you could use the Pe-2/8, or even the Ar-2 (which very much follows the shiney aluminum styling of the chinese bomber), Fantastic as always dingo, I dont have much to say here because you hit all the marks! :D

Could you maybe do more videos that focus on a battle such as your operation anchorage video, maybe the first battle of hoover dam or even maybe the second depending on your playthrough, or like maybe even the fallout 3s brotherhood vs enclave battles in the main story line, or maybe even do a video analyzing the enclaves walking, ship, platform, base thing

The lack of defensive armament is likely due to the fact that most modern bomber aircraft lack defensive weapons Because wtf is a 50 cal gonna do when your enemy could ping you from 9km out with a magic missile Take the Canberra B Mk 2 for example It was a british twin engine jet bomber it lacked defensive armament primarily because it was designed as a high-speed, high-altitude bomber, optimized for flying at altitudes where it was believed to be safe from enemy interception during its service in the 1950s and early 1960s. At the time of its design, the prevailing thought was that high-altitude flight would provide sufficient protection from enemy fighters. Additionally, it was believed that speed and altitude would be its primary defense mechanisms. However, as air defense technology advanced, it became clear that defensive armament was necessary, leading to later variants of the Canberra being equipped with defensive guns or other countermeasures. So we can presume the devs followed that design philosophy

Maybe someday, though it doesn't seem like Bethesda is super interested in spinoffs in the Fallout franchise. The only one I'd really classify as such a thing would be Fallout Shelter. I agree though! At the very least do a collab with Ace Combat or something.
