I actually find Maximus really compelling. I think his story is actually similar to Lucy's. From episode one when he didn't know what a circuit was, we saw that he isn't as capable as he needs to be to be in the brotherhood. He can't even convincingly say "I didn't do it" and he keeps getting beat up by everyone throughout the season. I don't think he's stupid or an idiot, he's just in like waaay over his head and he's trying to stay afloat. To him, being in the brotherhood is having a place for himself, and he idealizes the idea he has of them. That's why he let Titus die when Titus didn't live up to that ideal, and which is why takes his identity. Because "Knight Titus" is strong but "Maximus" is weak. He's just like Lucy imo. Both are people unprepared for the realities of living in the wasteland, but where Lucy is naive, he's just weak and doesn't meet his own expectation of what his idealized self is. At least that's how I read his character, it's totally valid to not find him as compelling as the other amazing characters like Lucy and The Ghoul 😅

It's interesting that Thaddeus did to Maximus exactly what Maximus did to Titus.
