It is actually rather quite alarming the behavior of orcas, going after the other mammals, but most explicitly the speed whales, which are the only beings on our planet capable of keeping the giant cephalopods in check. Very alarming times...

Mate, there's a bay in Donegal in Ireland called 'The Bloody Foreland' famously a pack of orcas met a shoal of dolphins and wrecked them till the beach turned red. Name has been there for longer than my lifetime. Don't think this is as new a phenomena as implied.

CocoCarla 10 From a taxonomy standpoint they are, in fact, dolphins. Whales have dorsal fins as well, making it an invalid way of telling them apart. All whales, dolphins and porpoise are a part of the Cetacean Family. The main difference is the number of blow holes and the presence of baleen or teeth for feeding. Whales have two blowholes and baleen while dolphins have a single blow hole and teeth. Porpoise closely resemble dolphins but have smaller beaks, triangular dorsal fins (as opposed to hooded), flat teeth (as opposed to round), have a higher percentage of body fat and are significantly less chatty.
@iamcarlaandtrippyismyking87336 жыл бұрын
D Hawthorne oh ok I just assumed they were just whales thanks
@grosmene6 жыл бұрын
Orcas are part of the dolphins family, which are a branch of the tooted whales. But they’re still whales. It’s very easy to verify on any legit website or textbook. The number of blow holes, their size or the presence of baleens are by no means the criteria to be a whale.

I wonder if the Orcas use Dave's boat to help find the Dolphins every April - June. Highly intelligent Asymmetric thinking creatures. Skimming the boats maybe a way of saying "thanks" (see you tomorrow) or "good by" (see you next season). And orcas hunting dolphins or other creatures (otters, deer, seals, etc.) are not to unusual.

Idk why I'm so fascinated by these sadistic creatures, but I guess it's because I grew up going to Sea world and watching these majestic animals show how intelligent and beautiful they are, up close. Seals are by far my favorite animal so it's really hard to watch orcas hunt and kill them, but I'm still amazed at it and love to see how brilliant they are. Another part of me is blown away by how they are called whales, but are really a porpoise, yet they will hunt and eat other porpoise and even the ultimate predatory fish, sharks(or great whites and tigers)

They're dolphins, not porpoises. Porpoises are generally a lot smaller than dolphins, and the orca is the largest member of the dolphin family.

Why don't the orcas just eat each other? They are basically doing the same when eating dolphins since orcas are part of the dolphin family and not whales like their name says. It's weird to think that in the ocean there's a wide variety of things to eat that aren't of the same species yet these orcas seem to be a bit cannibalistic and have a small menu of things that they eat.

Orca's have a large menu of things they eat. Seals, Dugongs, Birds, Dolphins, Shark livers, Squid, Turtles, Rays, Fish and least to mention Whales, deriving from their notorious nickname. They'll actually eat just about anything, aside from Humans, at least when we humans don't put them inside of fishbowls. Their nickname, if not for the Spanish sailors who witnessed them killing whales, should really have been Sea Wolves, considering the similarities. Super intelligent cetaceans who do not view themselves on the same side of the food chain as the striped dolphin.

Killer whales are extremely efficient killers and hunters. They love to hunt and attack in pods. They are extremely intelligent hunters just like the dolphins are. It’s crazy how people think Orcas are these calm, loving, peaceful whales and they are the opposite. They are prolific hunters. For Great Whites to fear you it says a lot about your reputation. And dolphins are so cute. I hate watching them be attacked but hey it’s nature. Us humans kills a lot more animals for food purposes and sometimes for other purposes which are pretty stupid like cloths and oil. Anyways blessings to all. Enjoy these documentaries which are awesome.
@lizslilcorneroftheinstitution4 жыл бұрын
Okay what is going on with Orcas?! They’re exhibiting behaviors and traits that weren’t heard of (for the most part from what I can tell) prior to the mid-90’s! You have completely odd behaviors in pods that are no where near each other yet the oddities continue! First was the initial sighting in mid 90’s when the female orca killed the first white shark. That’s now been repeated multiple times. You have orcas from/around Russia where white orcas are surviving well into adult lives on top of the number of them increasing! Then there’s the duo ‘Port & Starboard’ who are in the wild yet both have malformed/floppy dorsal fins. Now there’s this where orca are putting dolphins on the menu using some seriously impressive moves! What the hell is causing all of this?!
@thekramer10973 жыл бұрын
Nothing is causing this. Orcas have always been intelligent apex predators and they adapt to survive. The media sells you the idea of animals being all kind and gentle when in reality is the opposite, and people felt for it. The same happens with dolphins, panda bears and koalas.
@douglascampbell5062 жыл бұрын
The Kalk Bay fisherman and trek fisherman have witnessed this throughout the fishing periods in False Bay. Strand fisher and trek fisherman have seen these pods of killer whales coming in from Hangkilp and moving off the deep of Wolgat, chasing dolphins. The older fisherman talk about pods of killer whales up to 50 strong. My uncle Jeff, a fisherman who grew up in Kalk Bay, witnessed these orca pods, when he was only 19 years of age. He was a sardine pursain mate on the boats in False Bay, Hout Bay, Stompneus Baai, Walvis Bay and Las Palmas, Canary Island. He left the purseiners and started trekking in False Bay, from Macassar to Muizenberg. Oumatjies are his trek boats. I remember as a young boy of about 10 or 11 years, riding back from trekking at Macassar, with the crew and my brother, and my uncle stopping the Ford and trek boat in the high slopes of Wolf Gat, and everyone got out to watch a pod of killer whales chasing the shoal of dolphins, in the deep and heading westly. A lot of these trek fisherman, 20 December 2021, are still alive today. And the United Nations and Climate Change Activists, keep saying listing to the information of the Elders. If you truly want to gain insight into the history of movement of knowledge of False Bag, they heed the words of the United Nations and Climate Change Activists, and seek the wisdom from the Elders.

@Chaptor6 жыл бұрын
Elijah Hanson You’re using the word species here. A species would be something like a common dolphin or a bottlenose dolphin. They do however happen to be part of the same natural clade, cetacea. Upon further inspection of the matter it appears that people are in fact split on the question at hand, just like the two of us. I presume the sources of which we learned these facts from were varied in their belief of wether dolphins were whales or not. As a conclusion I believe that I can say with relative certainty that neither of us are completely correct or right. Thoughts?
@ToxicTash995 жыл бұрын
Elijah Hanson. Dolphins are whales mate.
@TheAmethysta75 жыл бұрын
Well it is easy to verify by looking it up at basically any serious scientific page (or even Wikipedia). Dolphins (including orcas) belong to a parvorder of cetaceans called toothed whales which also includes beaked whales and sperm whales for example. So, yes, orcas are undoubtly toothed whales, therefore they're whales.
