In tree climbing, when the tree does not provide a branch in the right location to use in climbing, we can create either a "False Crotch" or a variation of the False Crotch, which becomes a "Floating Anchor". Details on the Floating Anchor:

Thanks for all your work in this area. I love that you're up front and very thorough about all of the risks of all your methods. The amount of due diligence you do before putting out any information to the broader community is much appreciated.

Your comment is greatly appreciated. I am trying to avoid putting out content that leaves questions i should have addressed. And so i do think about them a bit before recording them and would rather they are a couple minutes longer and more comprehensive than leaving you guessing. Cheers

Hi John, Yes, been waiting for your version of the false crotch and I like it. The floating anchor is super! I know I'll be using that feeling safer of any possible damage to the attached webbing or rope. Thanks again!!

Well you certainly won't be if you share it with some friends! By the way, if I get there one day, we'll have to climb a tree and tip a glass. Cheers!

Hi John, Thanks for posting. I have learned a lot from your videos. As far as the floating anchor goes, if i used a larger "ring", would it be possible to run both ends of the rope up and through, around, then down and through the "loop" end? Thus creating a DSRT system? I prefer DSRT to SRT.

No. The floating anchor must be cinched tight to the tree. (Note that the newly introduced Maverick Hitch performs even better than the JRB Hitch in that regard.) Rationale: Let's say that were able to get it rigged, which would require removal and reinstalling the one friction hitch... once we get ourselves on the rope, because it's not cinched to the trunk, we are putting almost 100% of our weight on the strands holding the ring. And if those strands broke, the rind does not stay in place. It basically falls down the ropes towards us leaving us in an unstable system. I have verified this in testing. If we want to use DSRT, we have basically 2 options: 1. False crotch, which becomes a life safety component 2. Using the technique described in another video whereby we use a Longhorn Soft Shackle to create our cinch around the tree, and that only works if there are not lower branches. good job.... my suggestion is if you leave it in the tree for 6 months use a chain and steel pulley....... r.g.

Now would you prefer a maverick?

Yes. However, if i am tying an anchor knot in a fixed position (not a floating anchor) i use JRB Hitch. Everything is captured here: jrbtreeclimbing.com/content/favorite-knots/
