This is where my husband went to high school until 1962. He knew Varoshia so well. He would have loved to have walked around with you telling you all about the place. Unfortunately although I have taken him there quite a few times since it opened up he just won't connect with it all . He had a massive stroke 9 years ago. I actually met the son of the Eidelweis cafe the last time we visited . He was just a young boy when the war started. It's so hard for people who actually lived or went to school there. Those sea horses in the fountain pond in front of the school are original I believe as I have seen the orange festival 1972 on KZfaq and they were very briefly featured

How twisted can the authorities be there to turn a human tragedy into a tourist attraction. Shocking.

I'm amazed at how good of shape most of Varosha's buildings are (other than the ones damaged in the tragic events of 1974). I know grandparents who were born after Varosha was abandoned, and yet most of the buildings are still structurally intact. Compare it to a place like Uranium City, Saskatchewan which was largely abandoned in 1982, or Pripyat (1986). For obvious reasons, tourism to Pripyat has pretty much ceased in the past year but compare Pripyat in 2021 to Varosha today and Pripyat was in far worse condition despite being abandoned for 35 years instead of 48. Uranium City has fared even worse! Keep in mind, most of the buildings in those towns were built in the 1970s. And if we compare Varosha with Hashima Island, another area abandoned in 1974... I'm pretty sure Hashima Island was already more decayed by 1994 than Varosha is today. Climate has a big impact. Pripyat and Uranium City are both located in areas with regular snow and freeze/thaw cycles. For Pripyat, the snow cover lasts about three months of the year; for Uranium City, 6-7 months. In addition to the major loads on the roofs this snow causes, water that gets into cracks in buildings in the fall freezes, which expands, and thaws out in the spring leaving more damage. Hashima Island has mild temperatures, but lots of precipitation and high winds which also cause a lot of damage. Varosha on the other hand doesn't have any snow or below-freezing temperatures, and few high-wind or heavy rain events. All of this means that Varosha's level of decay is more consistent with an area in an "average" place that's been abandoned 28 years, not 48. It also speaks to the construction quality of the buildings, it's obvious they spared no expense on their construction. Keep in mind that sadly, most of these buildings were also used for less than 10 years. As I understand it, there was a big building boom that started in Varosha around 1965, as evidenced by the fact that there were several buildings under construction. The Golden Sands opened months before the events of 1974 so it was obvious that things would have just kept growing. The architecture and design of Varosha was ahead of its time as well. It’s like a huge time capsule, but very very sad. Imagine all the people whose lives and livelihoods were affected. Many of them came to England and credit to them have made a success of it here. Well done them!

Cannot imagine how the people got through all what happened. Cannot understand why things have not been resolved . You only live once so why cannot people just get on with each other & all live together. Peace happiness & love.

I was on a sightseeing tour with my wife and kids a few year back on the illigal occupaied side...there was big signs saying no photos...we were on a beach with all the shot broken hotels in the back...so toke my phone and have my wife standing on the water side just flipped the camera to get some shot of the broken hotels ...didn't see a very angry hariy woman guard shouting something very loud...but get some fine photos to Google earth though

Are the buildings with rounded corners and big canopies art-deco style or mid century modern? They all have flat roofs as well. Lovely architecture. I wonder if this type of architecture is common with other British ruled countries with similar climate? Is it possible to see this type of architecture in Australia? Zimbabwe? Kenya?

Afternoon George 👍🏽👍🏽We went there in October and I thought it looked like a post apocalyptic view to what Earth will look like when humans become extinct. Would have liked to taken a bike around and see more of the place, but we were pressed for time etc being on an excursion. Took some nice pictures before we went for a meal in the restaurant by the beach after the tour, which was very nice a free. All in all for €59 each it was a very good excursion and would recommend anyone going to Cyprus to book it 👍🏽👍🏽

Interesting but seems to be repeating your previous videos. Unless I've missed it, you don't seem to have followed John F Kennedy Avenue to the main beach area, as served by the mini bus. Also, it seems unnecessary to describe everything as 'old' when the whole place has been in limbo for the best part of 50 years. These minor observations aside, it is a very good video, as are all your productions.
