Retrofitting an optics mount for the FAMAS was no easy feat considering the wobbly top cover construction. The designers finally came up with a novel if somewhat bulky solution.

Hi, for the hole in the bottom where you attach your rails it is here for the trigger guard : you rotate it when you want to fire rifle grenade on the ground not to hurt your finger, and for mountain trop it also serve with big gloves. That’s what we learned in the basic training of French army And for the front accessory it is to mount the “PIRAT”, the French version of an AMPEQ, I hope you will find a mount and one PIRAT to shoot with it.

It’s cool to see how militaries force modernisation of their arms, when they were designed in a period before pic rail or STANAG. It’s similar to seeing what each of the nations who continue to use AK platforms are doing to drag a 75 year old design into 2022.

the STANAG system was already in place when the FAMAS was built, just the French refused to do anything with it. the FAMAS doesn't use and cannot use STANAG standard 5.56 because the action needs a specific case and powder load to run reliably in automatic. Similarly the magazine and magwell aren't quite the same. Though there isn't actually a STANAG agreed standard for magazines or magazine wells across NATO. Hence all the issues with the IAR and 416 and the magwells not being p mag compatible. hell there isn't even an agreed construction for a magazine. HK 'AR' magazines (as produced for the first gen 416 and the IAR as well as the SA80A2) are steel. funnily enough US forces go mad for them as trade bait.

@@gameragodzilla Luck, and really it wasn't much better. The OG AR15 is really clunky and awkward for mounting optics, with handguards that don't hold zero well. The US just had the money/interest in mass ordering entirely new receivers and handguard mounting designs for their entire military. Which is an expense few others were willing to eat. The US made the AR good for that more than it was at stock.

Kind of crazy to think of how little the FAMAS was iterated on throughout it's existence. Barely any ways to mount an optic, no MLOK options of any sort, and otherwise severely lacking in terms of accessory mounting. That accessory at the end is more reminiscent of an fixed-carry handle mount you would see on an M16 than something modern.

Will say one mod i did to a famas in the past was just in front of the bipod pivot point, (at a 10 o'clock position, where the front pillar of the 'upper' is) i drilled a small hole in either side, (gives options on if someone down the line wants to shoot it cackhanded) then fabricobbled a sling swivel and a nut and bolt together, making it ideal to sling in a 2/3 position sling. though depending on bolt sizes, might need to throw some washers on just so you dont accidentally rip the new front sling mount out when throwing the rifle around on a sling. (Found the SA80 sling to be quite nice on the famas actually, once i got it adjusted up properly on the 3 point i never went back to using a single point on the famas after that tweak)
