Far as I can figure, Samhain probably became pumpkin-headed because of the changing cultural perceptions surrounding Halloween. We've been shown before in the show that if enough people feel for something, it'll affect the spirit world. Like that time Sherlock Holmes came into existence because of how beloved a character he is. It's not outside the realm of possibility that with the pumpkin's popularity throughout the world as a Halloween symbol, it would rub off on the spirit of Halloween.

That Sam Hain issue was written by Peter David, perhaps the king of simplified endings, and I mean that in a very good way. To wit : One storyline of his in Spider-Man had some punks harassing Peter Parker, not as Spidey, and bringing Spidey in only made things worse, so MJ made the incredible brilliant suggestion of : Just have them arrested. Peter is like "Can I Do That?". It still didn't work out, but PaD's stories are full of those moments.

Sammy and Boogaloo (the villain from that other special) have entries in the new 2016 "Tobin's Spirit Guide". The Great Pumpkin-head looks as doofy as ever, but Boogaloo looks boss as f###. Weirdly, only Sam Hain is considered a world-ender, while Boogaloo is just a meta-spectre. Yeah, Jack Skelington's stunt double can end the world, but the demon that looks like Godzilla screwed a totem pole and is as tall as the former? Nah, nothing to worry about. I guess what I'm saying is, "Buy This Book! It's Awesome!"

Actually Samhain in that series was one of the weakest main villains in that series and in my opinion The Grundel was the most shit your pants scariest villains the Real Ghostbusters had, hell they were going to make him a reoccurring villain in the series but they got to many angry complaints from children's parents to put him in another episode
