I have to admit, the Hey Arnold special's moral does ring a little hollow considering Helga's family is beset by alcoholism and borderline (and sometimes not-so-borderline) emotional abuse, and Arnold's grandmother is suffering from pronounced (and probably worsening) dementia...kind of has the shadow of a gloomy cloud hanging over the whole affair. Happy Thanksgiving, ev'rybody!
@thenerdbeast7375
@thenerdbeast7375 Жыл бұрын
The only thing about Arnold's Grandma though is there are times that suggest she isn't suffering from dementia at all and is just fucking with people. In that episode alone she says "It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without fireworks" despite the gag being that she supposedly _doesn't_ know it is Thanksgiving. It is all on purpose, it was always on purpose.
@Dimensioneer88

The only thing that bugs me about the Thanksgiving episode is how Arnold is the ONLY one opposed to their 4th of July Thanksgiving. Doesn't anyone ELSE want a normal Thanksgiving once in a while? When did "Normal" suddenly mean "Bad"?

I actually think Helga's the one who has more legit reasons to not enjoy her family at thanksgiving. probably because her situation is alot more true to real life than arnold's. not to mention her general family situation. at least arnold's family gives him the attention and validation he needs and nobody's an alcoholic

Yeah but come on, imagine how frustrating it must be to basically celebrate the wonrg holiday, either because you're grandmother is slowly going insane and all anyone does is encourage her behavior. Or the Grandma is just doing it to fuck with them and again they still won't tell her to knock it off. That would drive anyone nuts if they had to put up with that crap for years.
@Hakajin
@Hakajin 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've always felt like it was unbalanced in Arnold's favor there. Maybe if it were just Thanksgiving, but... Even if Arnold's Thanksgiving is wacky, at least his family shows that they care about him. Helga, on the other hand... One thing I really like about Arnold and Helga's relationship is how they can relate to each other when it comes to having something missing in their lives. But with Arnold, it's more like, no one can replace his parents, and he often has to be the adult to his grandparents' (and the borders') antics... And yeah, I also get the impression that he worries about ending up without any close family, since his grandparents are old. But Helga grew up feeling genuinely uncared for. Not that it's a competition or anything, but it's her that I'll be happiest for when the two of them finally get together.
@strawberrysoulforever8336
@strawberrysoulforever8336 6 жыл бұрын
It's frustrating, but Arnold is still living with a family who cares about him. Although Arnold would like a "real" Thanksgiving, his family meets his emotional needs. And at the end of the episode, everyone sets up a traditional Thanksgiving just for him. Helga's family is shown to care about her too, of course, but unlike Arnold's family, this is an exception, rather than a rule.

@@thefanwithoutaface8105 Yeah that's nowhere near as bad as having to deal with negligent parents, one of whom is an alcoholic and always seems to be out of it because of constantly being wasted when they're not asleep, and the other who is work obsessed, short-tempered, treating you as a nuisance to them, making it well known that their "love" for you is entirely conditional upon whether you can jump through the arbitrary hoops they've set up to "prove" to them you're deserving of their love, constantly comparing you to your more accomplished sibling because they were far more willing to be supportive and validating of said sibling where as they're dismissive of your interests and accomplishments never being as good as or worth of support like your siblings, and generally being apathetic of your existence and rarely showing you any affection... It's no surprise that the show ended with Helga going to a child therapist. Being an adult who grew up in a very similar environment as Helga (the only differences being my father's alcoholism not being as extreme as Helga's mother's, my mother being like Helga's father only much worse, and majority of family get togethers and even day-to-day interactions being as tumultuous as Mr. Simmons's), I would much rather have had a family like Arnold's, because regardless of his grandmother's senility, he had a stable family unit between himself and his grandparents, and he knew that his grandparents and even other tenants of his building loved him unconditionally and were always there to support him and validate his feelings and interests, and didn't leave him constantly questioning whether or not they loved him or even wanted him around with how apathetic they were to him just being there. It fucking sucks and *will* fuck you up all through childhood, adolescence, and well into adulthood, unless you're able to get therapy. And regardless of what you or others may assume, that I'm sympathy-baiting/trauma posting for attention or whatever, that's not the point. Yes, I am posting this "for attention" but it's to call attention to this real thing that happens to a lot of people, because society has a tendency to downplay emotional abuse, especially emotional abuse inflicted on children at the hands of the people that are supposed to care for them and help mold their emotional, mental, and behavioral development such as teachers and parents, or outright dismiss it as the children being "spoiled", "bratty", and "ungrateful" or the traumatized adults the abused children grew into as "exaggerating it" or "overly sensitive" or again "ungrateful" because society still perceives all parents as the unalloyed good; that parents are *always* in the right, that they should be obeyed without question regardless of their requests, mainly because of archaic Puritanical concepts that society (specifically white Americans, though I know this is not something only white people deal with, that many other non-white cultures have their equivalent of the harsh parent(s) that will resort to gaslighting, emotional abuse, and the power imbalance in their favor to control every aspect of their child's life down to the minutiae and rely on some variant of the "I'm the parent, you *must* do everything I say or ask of you, or you're not a good child and you don't love me" mentality but I don't speak for them) still clings to, and a persistent belief that "real abuse" is physical-- the kind that will leave bruises, welts, and scars, and if you don't have physical evidence of your abuse (because depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and other neuroses as well as emotional and behavioral problems or stunting don't count, "only veterans and active members of the military can experience PTSD"-- spoiler: Anyone can experience PTSD because anyone can be traumatized, trauma related to military service is not the only valid form of trauma, and if you s_lf-h_rm or you're s__c_d_l you're "just looking for attention" to these people). People will tie themselves into knots in order to invalidate and dismiss the subject of emotional child abuse inflicted by parents, because they don't want to admit it's a thing, they don't want to admit certain folks should not be parents, and they might also not want to admit that they may have also been victims of this type of abuse or may have continued in perpetuating the toxic cycle of abuse by raising their own children the way *they* were raised, because that's how their grandparents raised their parents and so on and so forth. (That's why going to a licensed therapist or psychologist can be so beneficial. They can help to identify the underlying issues, recognize the toxic cycle of abuse, and can help to unpack and resolve generational trauma.)

noobmaster117 To be fair her family has shown that they care about her on some level. Bob got in a fist fight at least twice to save her, Miriam is constantly drunk but seems to care about her daughter and when she's not drunk she spends a lot of time with her and even helps her with her school work, Olga just all-around seems to care about her but doesn't fully understand that she's partly the reason that Helga gets neglected, due to her family always being nice to her she never really realized that they neglected Helga and due to her always being off at college she never really gets the chance to see how they treat her.

I recently rediscovered an episode of the 80s Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon called Food For Thought aka Alvin and Simon tutor Theodore in American history. I consider it one of those 'Close Enough' Thanksgiving episodes, even though there is an actual Thanksgiving episode. I like how it takes a more "realistic" approach with history, particularly with the Native Americans. It covers Christopher Columbus meeting the Indians, the first Thanksgiving, and Custer's Last Stand.

The Mouse and the Mayflower is my childhood and my parents still have to watch it every year.
@michaelpalmieri7335
@michaelpalmieri7335 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it was called "The Mouse ON The Mayflower." The correct title was shown in this video, so I don't know how the narrator (or you, for that matter) thought it was "The Mouse AND The Mayflower." This reminds me of something my mom said when this special was first aired when I was a kid in Yonkers, NY, back in the early 1970s. (I saw an ad for the show in my school newspaper) Mom (God rest her soul) saw it listed in the "TV Guide," and for some reason, she thought its title was "MICKEY MOUSE On The Mayflower"! Can you believe that? Unfortunately, my mother was always misreading or misunderstanding things. For example, there was a time when we were in a bookstore, and she called out to me that she found a book about Barbra Streisand, because she knew that I was a big fan of Streisand's. But, when I looked at the book, I saw immediately that it was actually a tome about dog training by Barbara WOODHOUSE, an English lady who had a TV show in the United Kingdom on the subject, and had become something of a celebrity here as well as there after she was interviewed on "60 Minutes." (CBS) Apparently, mom saw only the name "Barbara" on the front cover and just ASSUMED that it was about Barbra Streisand. She probably forgot or didn't know that Miss Streisand dropped the middle "a" from her first name, whereas Barbara Woodhouse kept that middle "a." Another time, mom was looking in the TV listings in our local newspaper and saw a blurb for a documentary about Humphrey Bogart, the actor, but then, she said she saw a listing for another Bogart program called "The Legend Of Bogie" on another channel. However, I looked at the blurb and saw that it was really a listing for a horror movie entitled "The Legend Of BOGGY CREEK"! Then, there was the time when my mother and I were in our local Alexander's Department Store (maybe you've heard of that chain), and somehow, we got lost trying to find our way out of the place. Mom saw what she figured was an "Exit" door, but I saw right away that there was a sign on the door saying that it was an EMERGENCY EXIT! I tried to warn mom that she was headed for the wrong door, but I don't know if she didn't hear me, or misunderstood me, or just wasn't paying attention because she was in a hurry to get out. Anyway, she tried to open the door, and she set off a loud alarm bell! When I told her that I knew it was an emergency door and that I tried to warn her, she said she didn't know anything about it, or at least words to that effect. Of course, these were just isolated incidents and I'm not saying that my mother was dumb, but the way she misunderstood these things were so embarrassing, that there were times when I was actually ashamed that she was my mom. Sometimes, I think she was just taking after her own mother, in other words, my maternal grandmother. We called her "Nana," probably so as not to confuse her with my PATERNAL grandmother, in short, my dad's mother. In any case, Nana wasn't too bright sometimes. Mom would often recall a time when she was much younger (before she met and married my father) and was still living with her mom and dad (my and my older sister's future maternal grandparents) in their apartment in the Bronx in New York City. One day, mom told us, she and Nana were walking home after grocery shopping, when they were passing the local firehouse and they heard the alarm bell ringing, and mom said they'd better get out of the way because the fire engines were about to come out, but Nana insisted that the firemen were only "testing" the alarm, and she started walking in front of the fire station, when all of a sudden, the bay doors flew open and the engines started coming out with their sirens blaring and bells clanging! Nana was so startled and scared that she dropped her bag of groceries on the sidewalk, and one of the fire trucks ran over one of the tin cans from the store (I don't remember what mom said was in the can). Well, as you can imagine, Nana was as mad as hell, not just because she got scared by the fire engines and her groceries were ruined as a result, but also because her daughter (my future mother) was so busy laughing at her, that she could barely help Nana pick everything up!

@@FamiliarFacesChannel *I* was about to tell Spaghetti-Spider that! XD I'm glad you like it too, in fact the two Oz films are among my favorites of the Tom and Jerry crossovers. (thinks) Actually, as far as I can recall they and the Sherlock one are my only favorites amongst the crossovers. With the Return to Oz one I really like how they made Oz real again (instead of keeping it a dream like in the original live-action version), I like how they used the Gnome King as the villain (and even gave him a human counterpart), and the whole Jitterbug bit is fun. Plus Jason Alexander is one of my favorite actors. I also love the Droopy cameos in these movies, his cameos and the cameos of other MGM characters are among the best parts. Droopy being one of the Winkie soldiers in the first Oz movie always makes me laugh, and I love the irony of Droopy being Old King Cole in Giant Adventure. Red has great moments in Giant Adventure and Meet Sherlock Holmes as well. Oh, and of course Tuffy is always great. He's honestly my favorite part of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory crossover. Actually he's the only part of the movie I like (apart from Charlie's friendship with Tom and Jerry and getting to see Mr. Salt tell off Veruca), since I always felt that they messed up the plot twist of Slughorn actually being Wonka's employee Mr. Wilkinson.

Hope your Thanksgiving goes well despite your family underestimating your job. I have to work on Thanksgiving so this was a nice surprise. I really wish Thanksgiving got more respect but I understand why. It is rather ironic the one day Indians and Pilgrims were nice only for the Pilgrims to turn on them and reduce the Indians to 1% of the U.S. population. Maybe the holiday could be reworked or something. I don't recall any of these specials mostly because I was watching Cartoon Network for Thanksgiving specials. Looking forward to more of your work and Happy Thanksgiving from Texas :)

That is just way off. The Pilgrims alone were hardly the cause. They and other other explorers and settlers brought diseases with them that were unknown to the Native Americans.

True I should have been more specific. I learned that the French were involved too as well as diseases. I was only referencing the feast in question.

I'm thankful for this list you made CR, Thanksgiving specials are few and extremely underrated. My personal favorite one was from Boy Meets World.

Do you know why they're underrated? Very few countries have it. My country doesn't, even though we had a Declaration of Independence. I bet no cartoon has ever done a Waitangi Day episode, which is the closest thing we have to Thanksgiving, ie: nothing more than a day off for schools and some workplaces.

@@michaelpalmieri7335 I was talking about the 1835 Declaration of Independence in New Zealand, not the American one. I was just saying most countries don't celebrate Thanksgiving. It's American. And if you want to know, so is the Fourth of July. We only have fireworks on Guy Fawkes'. We have Waitangi Day, which is the day of the Treaty of Waitangi from 1840, but no special feasts, just February 6 as a national holiday. Fun fact: In some countries, Christmas isn't a holiday. Kids go to school in Jewish countries like Israel.
