I rescued an African Grey from an abusive situation. It took a year before he would not get upset when I first entered his room. I finally got him to get on my finger, but once and while he would bite. When they bite it goes to the bone. I don't know how many words he knew, but he talked all day long and even knew what things were called. I finally would not put my hand in his cage without some kind of barrier. He died a few years ago from a stroke. I never did tame him all the way, but I really enjoyed him.

Apparently, they already had other birds that they were bonded with, and Gizmo likely didn't get along with the other birds. So as the last one in, he was the bird that got the least attention. I've known other people who had to give up a new bird, because the birds they already had would attack it. So their only option was in their opinion, was to keep Gizmo alone by himself. Just glad that Gizmo has found a wonderful new home.

@@d.e.b.b5788 Possibly. Also, African Greys tend to be very picky when it comes to choosing friends. That's why if you want to have one as a pet, you should always go to a breeder who has hand reared and has a number of them. Greys like Gizmo are some of the smartest parrots, they can sometimes fully converse and understand what humans are saying. They are some of the best candidates for actual human to animal conversation. I'm assuming they learn to speak the same way an infant does- by picking up on what's going on and connecting certain words with actions, objects, or emotions. Beautiful creatures.

@@bgmx74 i totally agree with you. It’s a life commitment. I can talk about that because I have an Amazon parrot and she is totally dependent of me. I try my hard but I know that she needs more. I was not educated and like everyone I want “the bird who can speaks” and now I realized that we are so egoists because they were born to live free. Mine is very intelligent and I can win money having her on KZfaq but I do not do that because it’s encouraging others to buy these intelligent and precious creatures. Please be educated they are very demanding !!!

I had an African Grey like yours but he was stolen by the people I had pet sitting for me. The police couldn’t locate them and finally - like losing a child - I had to grieve and give up. Ten years down the road and I still miss his appropriate talking to me . He was like yours, talking and begging and telling the cat to “watch out”. So sweet and precious. These birds are so special.

I am so sorry...I had a African Grey named Angel Girl. She had two different colored eyes. I loved her so much. She was stolen by the Pool Guy. A 17 yr old son of the owner of a pool cleaning business. He let himself into my screened porch and took her in SC.

They're pretty brilliant. I remember seeing a doc on PBS about a bird who they were trying to make do his really smart "tricks". And he said, "Don't want to. Wanna go home. Hungry." And it was so contextual, I knew right then and there that they really do learn to understand words and use them appropriately.

Dr. Pepperberg's Alex (unfortunately, he was essentially a lab rat) would say "Wanna go back" when he didn't want to "work" any longer. His life could have been more emotionally fulfilling, but he did prove to the scientific community how intelligent his species really is. He changed our definition of "bird brain" forever. Thank you, dear Alex, RIP.

They share a similar part in their brain like us that allows them to do that. Just shows how big that part really is. It's small but big. They have to learn how to talk by a certain age or they won't grasp it just like us. 🤷 and to say humans aren't genetically mutated is a lie because animals walk the earth before humans and look at all the similarities we have to some of them

I’m so glad you talked about African Greys using English - CORRECTLY and IN CONTEXT. My cousin has a grey, Buddy, and it is absolutely true that greys can communicate in English just like people do. One day, we were standing outside the house but Buddy could hear us, and he said ‘you’re talking too loud". My cousin had a dog Buddy didn’t like. The dogs name was Max. My cousin pulled a turkey out of the oven, and Buddy said, "Awwww Max!” Then made a laughing sound. There’s so many more examples with Buddy. People who don’t know greys, or even animals, think I’m nuts when I tell them greys can speak human language and are complicated as humans are - but it’s so true. And Gizmo shows that too.

I keep coming back to this sentiment! Gizmo’s first owners had good intentions, but impact is always more important, and it’s good that in the end they realized they were in over their heads. I know how it feels to want to save another creature with all of your heart but to not have the resources. The responsible choice feels selfish in that instance, but it IS best.
