John Lautner’s rustic-modern cabin, tucked away in the San Jacinto mountains outside LA, is a classic example of organic architecture. In 1957, the Pearlman family used an unbuildable lot at Idyllwild to raise a bold dwelling that erases the line between inside and outside.
On the panoramic view side of the home, rough, unmilled logs act as structural support, but accompanied only by floor-to-ceiling glass, they become camouflaged with the surrounding oaks, cedars and pines.
Lautner (a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright) went on to become world-renowned, but the Pearlman Cabin in the resort town of Idyllwild, was his first round house (even before his iconic Chemosphere (1960) or Zimmerman Residence (1968). Nancy Pearlman, who was 10 when the home was built, remembers it was her mother who wanted the round house to go with the round table as a centerpiece.
“It just seems so natural to me to have one big beautiful room,” explains Nancy, who says they’ve slept 25 on the floor, “It’s very rustic, but it’s very practical”.
Nancy’s uncle built the home while living in a tent. He only needed help with a few elements, like installing the massive windows and dynamiting some of the boulders to lay a foundation.

Im addicted to your channel, Kirsten. Like others have said, I appreciate that you don't add music and we can hear the natural sounds. I also appreciate that there isn't an intro, and you keep the focus on the home/dwelling/person being interviewed. Your children are also so respectful. I can only imagine how valuable it is to have this exposure to new places and people to their upbringing. Thank you, and I will always look forward to your content. Please never change!

This is one of my favorite Lautner designs. His use of actual tree trunks for columns to support the roof and those big glass windows is what really make this "cabin" stand out.

Oh my gosh Kirsten what a beautiful production you made! I adore how your children engaged the host so much, she thrived off off their questions and they were genuinely interested in what she said, what wonderful people you are raising. She was like a garden fairy and a fire fly all woven together flitting around her forest home so happy to entertain and share this lovely space her parents created, I felt like I was there. So much happiness I’m moved emotionally by the beauty. The videography you and your husband created is stunning!

I especially appreciate that such interesting things got built for a time. It really was a special period until the 70s when wealth combined with a relative lack of zoning. Lots of wild safety violations in the homes featured on this channel. But there’s something special that was lost when zoning and building regs came into effect.

When she walked into the home, she excitedly said, WOW! And the owner of the home was laughing with delight, understanding the impression the room makes on people. It is so beautiful, and I love the angles of the glass walls that face the forest. She is exactly correct, that it makes it seem like you are IN the forest. I absolutely love that room. I probably would have skipped a little into the room myself, delighted and not really knowing how to react. Kristen immediately sat down to enjoy the view. I love this owner, because she loves the excitement of Los Angeles - I loved the 30 years I lived there - but also appreciates this quiet beauty in the mountains. I like the Lake Elsinore area, and I found a couple of lots that I could afford, but they too are unbuildable - too steep. It would cost a lot of money to build there, and I wouldn't be able to get much of a house and there would be no yard for my dog, unless I spent more money to have it terraced. So, for me, it remains unbuildable. There are some lots, okay, but not with a lake view. I love the refrigerator - it fools you because one assumes there is an oven beneath the burners. I'm so glad you went to see this house and that we can see it too. And, the owner is such a sweet woman who loves to laugh and is delighted with her home today as much as she has always been. It's really amazing.

PENSACOLA’S FORGOTTEN TREASURE: THE ROUND HOUSE - John Lautner designed a house for his cousin Ernest Lautner and Ernest’s wife Mildred in 1958. Ernest was a builder by trade and Pensacola wasn’t exactly next door to John Lautner’s office, so John left the construction entirely in the hands of his cousin. The Lautner family still lives there.
