Hey man, my wife is Mexican, and before we got married everytime I went to visit her, we'd watch the novellas on Univision. They had English subtitles, so I can understand. And I got to say, most of the novelas we watched are really good. I'd rather watch novellas over daytime soaps any day

Supposedly they can attract better writers and actors than soaps because there are fewer opportunities to do anything more serious. I saw a few eps of one of the better ones, and it was surprisingly kinetic. They actually seemed to be trying not to horrifically torture the male eyeball the way a soap does.
