Ray, Marianne, Liam, Seamus, and Declan are an adventurous family of 5 who have done multiple overland journeys together. Their last epic trip in 2015 involved shipping their 1954 Land Rover Station Wagon from Canada to the UK, and then driving it 16,000 Miles from London to Singapore.
They were re-creating the first overland expedition from London to Singapore that was done in 1955 by 6 students from Oxford. It was called the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. Their journey was the first and last time anyone drove that same route because shortly after their trip, Burma (Myanmar) closed their borders. You can read about the original trip here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_...
The family had to pack like minimalists to fit all their gear into the Land Rover. They each had a back pack with one change of clothes, a down blanket, and a compressible pillow.
They had tools, a kitchen box, folding chairs, and a box of books for the kids who were being home schooled during the trip.
The whole journey took 9 months, which includes a month at the start and end of the trip exploring both London and Singapore.
To fund the trip, Ray, who is an advertising consultant, planned most of his projects before or after the trip, and did about a month's worth of work while on the road.
The Hyland family tracked their trip from London to Singapore on this Facebook page if you want to look back through their posts:

I enjoyed this tale of this family on an incredible journey. We just completed our first Long-Term Overland trip. 506 days driving from California to Panama and back. One learns so much traveling like this. We are hooked and we are already planning the next big trip.

Exploring Alternatives I'm living it, just working towards a van, been on the road doing my research, so when I get better situated my branch out area will grow. Right now I cover an area video logged over 100's thousands of square miles. All Van island , Fraser Valley , BC interior , PG , Hwy's 1. 3. 5. 7. Is Hwy, and so on. Some day up deep north explore into my choice of research. PS, thank you for your great show you've developed here, I've been here since your 2 in it's beginnings ... cheers from Ian A aka Tinman. (Tinman is because I had to own my severe Tinnitus disease)

I'm so happy you guys enjoyed your experience! And it's great to hear from the kids, their point of views being heard means a lot. I myself could never have done this. Too many sensitivities, food allergies and other issues just being a female would not be great for anyone else in that car. I would be annoyed and I would annoy everyone else.
