Family of Green Book's Dr. Donald Shirely speaks out

The brother of Dr Donald Shirley, the black pianist featured in the Oscar-nominated Green Book, slammed it as a 'shameful travesty', he told DailyMailTV from his Milwaukee home. Maurice Shirley, 82, is speaking out as the movie, billed as a touching tale of the unlikely friendship between Shirley and racist Italian American Tony 'Lip' Vallelonga who was briefly his driver, is nominated for five Oscars. Maurice says Shirley and Vallelonga were never friends and he was fired for behaviors shown in the movie, such as his refusal to carry Shirley's luggage or open his car doors. Although the family is upset with the moviemakers, they hold no grudge against actor Mahershala Ali who plays Shirley, saying he was the only one to reach out to them on learning of their push-back.

My first impression is that they are upset that they weren't involved in the making of the movie, and didn't get any money our of it.

The movie is based on what the driver experienced during the trip, what he saw and what he heard. The family was not there.

This movies is still a GREAT movie . I enjoy movies like this , I was raised by a beautiful black women her name was Mary Haynes . I LOVED her and anything that makes me remember and think of her touches my HEART. Sincerely Mrs. M

I think Shirley wasn’t accepted by his family and wasn’t close to them, hence they didn’t get his estate. Now they want to benefit from the movie, oh well!

How can anything in this interview be taken seriously when the first thing that his brother Maurice says is "...I haven't seen the movie, nor will I."?? He obviously is basing his entire opinion on what he has been told about the movie. My father was was a personal friend of Dr. Shirley's for over 60 years and much like Tony Vallelonga's experience, Donald did not talk about his family very often - if at all. Also, the brother states that his relationship was strictly an employer/employee relationship which is totally the opposite of what Dr. Shirley said in a recorded interview. DR. SHIRLEY: “I trusted [Vallelonga] implicitly. See, Tony got to be, not only was he my driver, we never had an employer-employee relationship. We didn’t have time for that. My life was in this man’s hands. Do you understand me? So we got to be friendly with one another." Whatever the dynamic with his family was, it is a fact that when he died in 2013, the Shirley family were totally excluded from his will. His friend/Manager and possible a small number of others were given his entire estate which included his music library and rights to his official life story. If he had a close, ongoing relationship with his relatives as they claim, it is very strange that he would leave them nothing. I believe the family are speaking purely from a position of bitterness, not being consulted as well as not being able to profit from this very successful movie.

Sounds like the same complaints from Megan Markle's family because they weren't included in the celebrity and accolades.Jealousy is a green eyed monster regardless of skin color.

It doesn't matter. They are his family. Why should others profit and his family sees nothing. How would you feel? People are always profiting off of others in one way or another. How would you feel or what would you do?

So why should they profit? Its like saying If my family treated me like an outcast and I become successful, my family should also claim that success simply because they're my family? Gtfo.

I have just watched The Green Book. What a warm , humorous, deep, compassionate, educating, strong willed, show of injustices, trying to cross the boundaries of life, and true genuine respect and love of two human beings. Do the research for yourselves. Besides all the complaints , and not even seeing the film. Stay silent if you do not have anything nice to contribute. What a journey! Would love to have met them both. From Western NC.

The movie only praises Donald Shirley and it shouldn't matter if the movie is accurate or not. We should remember the positive meaning behind the movie, instead.

Very true, but having listened to the complete 2010 Q&A recording with both Don and Tony, I can tell you that the movie is 90% correct.

So they weren't notified or contacted by the film maker. This film was great and it was based on both their relationship. It doesn't have to be completely accurate it's only a movie or maybe they wanted to cash in on the film too.

A fabulous movie...and petty bitching from relatives,won't ruin it for me.The usual suspects pop up,jealousy and no paychecks.The movie mentioned,if his brother wanted closeness,he had his number....'tuff luck folks,Dr. Shirley is gone,and you certainly were no part of his life.

I looked at Don Shirley’s bio and was confused; where did it said he was gay? Didn’t he had a wife?

Shirley was once married but was also gay. In the 2010 recorded interviews he did not address that. Tony did recount the YMCA incident however. Shirley insisted that the movie should not be made/released until after his death. Maybe that’s the reason why.

Hmmm. Interesting. I wonder how much money his brother is making off of this re-discovery of Shirley and his music, not to mention that film. It's pretty well established that Dr Shirley was estranged from his family.

I don't believe the brother would be making anything off of Dr. Shirley's music library or the official biographical rights as that would be a part of his estate, of which the family are not heirs.

@@sonyapeach No he wasn't. By who? He was interviewed by a magazine about the film after the fact. He actually says in the interview that he hasn't seen it and is boycotting it.
