Eight minutes and it establishes Tony as mostly uneducated and probably not the brightest man, but with a shrewd, hard streak in him. Such fantastic character development.

I agree I was impressed by that explicit, deep, character exploration and depiction. In 8 minutes I feel I know everything about him. They nailed the american- Italian familia side perfectly. I mean perfectly. I worked for many years with italians and this is exactly how they will interact flawlessly in toxicity and everyday life. This scene alone made me want to watch the movie. Seems like a real gangster movie coming up in that storyline.

He went from throwing away two glasses that black men drank out of in the beginning of the movie, to inviting a black man over to his home for Christmas dinner by the end of the movie. Like other commenters stated, that is a great example of character development. Not to mention, he became a lifelong friend to Don Shirley. Tony's smart man. Bouncing at a big club like that, you probably run into your fair share of wise guys, and maybe have to put hands on them. He's getting in good with his "pal Gio" there so that he's got some juice too if he ever needs someone to vouch for him after roughing up someone who is connected.
@griffinsalluci3787
@griffinsalluci3787 2 жыл бұрын
If he roughed up a made guy being on Gio’s good graces wouldn’t save him. He would be gone. He never made any money for them. (In the movie, real life stories not shown are not included.) So he wouldn’t be of any importance and would be clipped without challenge. To me he seemed like he was trying to join up in the ranks and take care of certain favors for LaScudo.
@KS-xk2so
@KS-xk2so 2 жыл бұрын
@@griffinsalluci3787 Yeah for sure he couldn't knock out a made guy, but then again Tony is smart enough to know not to do that. I more meant "connected" guys. Guys who probably know somebody who is made, but ain't themselves yet. Gio could step in then most likely, if the guy made an issue of it. Tony seems to be well known in the neighbourhood for his ability to throw hands. I feel like if he wanted muscle work for legit mobsters, he'd already have it. I doubt he wants to commit actual crimes.

Viggo really became this character, he gained weight, his hair is short and dark and he totally has just become the guy. That’s a real talented actor that does that, and studies his character and creates him. The way he walks, the way he talks, his gestures, the way he eats and dusts his feet off, and even the way he fought, and speaking Italian. That’s a good actor.

@@a_single_white_female yeah he has has it short, and he has looked great with it shirt, like when he played the Russian mobster who was really undercover, but he really looked the part and changed his whole body and you could tell he was studying his character and creating him from top to bottom. They used to give us that in acting classes and later when I directed I would make my actors and actresses write everything down about the way their character walked and talked and eats, etc. down to what kind of dog or pet they would have, or what kind of car. Or if they would be the type to have a pet. It’s a good exercise and many many serious actors use that in their craft. I always want to use wigs though. Because I don’t want my long hair cut that’s down to my hips and even longer. Now Wigs look very convincing when they are done right. A good wig master is a great asset too.

After recently watching this movie all I can say is this is absolutely spectacular one of my favourite movies a fantastic storyline and great chemistry between actors. Great to see a relationship developing and Tony realising the errors of his ways. (or does he) I hope this movie gets many awards superb acting, great film directing brilliant and morally a great storyline.

I didn't even notice that Tony's family came over just to watch over Dolores because the workers were "coloured folks". It shows how the wrong influence can shape a kind-hearted man, but also one kind-hearted man can influence others from saying racial epithets to accepting someone at Christmas dinner.

Viggo Mortensen was the best choice for the role of Tony Lip. Not only is he a versatile actor, he’s a polyglot with Italian being one of his languages that he learned.

For yous who don't know, Henry Hill in real life was just an errand boy who's been around some crews that's about it. The Goodfellas exaggerated some events to make it a movie, not for nothing, it's a great movie.

These opening scenes made me think of John Gregory Dunne's fiction or John O'Hara's. Viggo Mortensen is a character who will change and develop as all dynamic characters in fiction change with their experience of the unforgiving world.
