Just read that in 2015, the house was sold for less than half of what they paid for it, not to mention the money they put into it, and she still owed workmen 41,000 pounds. How sad. I think they made a huge mistake buying it in the shape it was in knowing they didn't have the $$ to fix it up.

Sadly, I can see Adrian so overwhelmed with the work he had done he unconsciously is separating himself from the house to get a break. He seems like he is burned out. The issue is that if he continued to work from outside sources for revenue, he should have hired a small contractor team to at least finish some of the load. This is why it’s important when planning to buy these large homes that there is a plan beyond just the upfront budget, but make certain there is a way to put revenue back. The isolating location seems to be a double edge sword for this couple’s situation.

In its hey-day it probably had a dozen or more servants running the house so the owners could entertain. I lived for 20 years in a rural area thinking we would live there the rest of our days. We had 5-acres, a blacksmith shop, a pool, 2 1/2 acres of organic gardens, a separate 750 sq. ft. papermaking studio and art gallery business and a big pole barn/garage. I had a seasonal business there and we upgraded the kitchen and baths and added continuous Amtico custom flooring throughout the entire home (that alone was 18,000). Then it was one problem after another; 1) The septic system and drain field died (a $37,000 cost to meet county codes) 2) We needed a new roof ($11,000) the pool pump and cover died, and then we had four consecutive years of high ground water flooding -and it became the proverbial money pit!. As we aged, and my husband was diagnosed with cognitive decline we found we could do the 24/7 maintenance anymore. We prepared the property to sell. and put it up for sale in 2018. It sold twice and came back to us twice and finally a local developer who bought old homes and turned them in to VBO rentals. It turned out there was no jobs in our area so no young person or middle-aged person would want it unless they were willing to drive and hour to an hour and a half to and from each day. A young couple could not afford it, even at the selling price of just $230,000 (fireplace, three bedrooms/two bath, large sunporch with river rock flooring etc.) We had to sell it for a low-ball price after 7 months on the market for only $198,000 at a loss to us. So, there are LOTS of reasons a rural home cannot be easily sold.

PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE 1_Before buying one of those MEGA Houses, first rent it for a year or so and try to see if is really possible for you to make a living around your house. 2 And above all, BEFORE buying the house, get an Structural Engineer to check out the whole house 3_and then get a house inspector. Whatever the son did to lose his dad's trust, there's probably a very good reason Adrian feels all the weight with the farming income. I don't know why the son can't clean the holiday cottages with mom, get daily do it list each morning. When Ruth talks about the need for structured focus, every one of them needs that. I suspect that's Adrian's real burden, feeling he is the lone do-er, rather than being a control freak, but only they know. I simply cannot understand why this couple think they are suited to the hospitality business. His obvious talent and expertise lies in the building trade but I have doubts that she is in any way suited to looking after paying guests. Not providing an evening meal? Her not being up for those guests who were leaving on a photographic safari at 4.00am with an obviously exhausted host (not a good ‘look’) to see them off with at least flasks of coffee was inexcusable. In case anyone is thinking ‘what do I know’ (😉) I ran a successful 4 star B&B in France for many years and, as a volunteer with our local tourist office, I produced our annual local B&B and Gîtes catalogue with one other volunteer which meant we regularly visited going on for 100+ establishments- some of which did not make into the catalogue - so I’ve seen my fair share of well meaning gîte and B&B owners who were simply not suited to the hospitality industry. I admire Ruth’s patience and her persistence but sometimes some people are just not suited. I’ve tried to follow up on the fate of this beautiful house but there appears to be a bit of a tangle and a possible change of ownership (bought for £680,000 by this couple 22 July 2004, sold for £365,000 4 November 2014 then sold for £500,000 17 October 2016). Sadly, they made an impulse buy and not having taken the time to really take a look at the bones of the place, costs, etc. - deciding to just take the plunge - cost them dearly. Adrian probably put a lot of stock into having the skills to do a lot of the work himself, but with that large and complicated of a property, when you’re working on one thing, something else is getting neglected and worsening by the day. The thing is, these country homes were built by mega rich people as playthings, upkeep, staff….all minor expenses at a time of slave wages. There’s a reason why most of the ‘great homes’ in the US were demolished and rezoned….they were never profitable.

The problem is those old estates had large crews of people (at practically slave wages) maintaining them! Nowadays no one but a multi-millionaire could afford a staff of 40 full-time. These new buyers are naive to think they can do it themselves!

Meanwhile, my husband does his regular construction and happy, happy, happy are we. I don't see this working out for them if Adrian doesn't get his priorities straight.

This guy already has another woman. Men rarelly abandon a relation without having someone else to lean on. No wonder he has no time "for the house"....usually men rather not put in any effort when their own "dreams" require work so if it does not work they believe ...well I did not put a lot of effort so it aint like I lost it. If the relationship is bad they dont deal with it of walk away in a civilized manner, they just go on "hide away" until the woman becomes the "difficult one". Even if she is or became difficult its no excuse for such "stooling" behaviour. Thats why we say most men dont leave a relationship, they just abandon it by going on a "pain in the * dont bother me" attitude, and take off only when some other woman is already putting up with them
