Gitte Nielsen well it's obviously great that he chose to be a good parent, but does he deserve to be treated like a hero simply bc he is a man and "not many men" do this for their kids? I say no, but that is the double standard in our society. I'm not knocking the dude. He is a great dad and I'm happy for them and hope they succeed.

Amen. There seems to be such a low bar for men. Like any halfway decent man gets treated like a hero for being a decent person. How many women are stuck in this situation - are they treated like amazing heros? Nope. It's just seen as normal.

My body is broken due to all the years of hard work but it was worth it to see what good men they have grown into with families of their own .they also have great respect for their wives and women in general . You are teaching them to love and persevere together as a family . They won't forget your effort or your love. Good luck The kids are lucky to have you.

I had a very similar childhood to both of you as well. Never knew what love was until I met my hubby. When we had our first son though I didn't know how to love him - I was actually terrified of him. But now - with 3 boys altogether - aged 16, 11 & 8, it's a very different household. I have given my kids EVERYTHING my own parents NEVER did: Love, (unconditionally), attention, affection, and self confidence. Has it always been easy? No way, but worth all of it and more? For sure. Us women are stronger than we often give ourselves credit for. We are capable of changing the world. But we need to do it together.

I knpw there is a big Brothers program where men (who are heavily screened ) and matched up with boys and teenagers who have no male presence in their life and meet with them once a week . Had a friend who did it with a VERY angry mixed up kid who totally around. Helped him prep for his College test and apply for college. Kid is now in his second year. See if there is a program for young girls. If I remember they prefer people who are successful as that shows these kids that anything is possible.....just a thought. Oh and my friend who did it found it very fulfilling.

Linda M. I was in a situation just like this. My daughter was 3 and I left my daughter's father and he was abusing drugs at the time. We were in two shelters for unfortunately 3 yrs and was a very hard time for me and I felt like a garbage parent. It hurt and I felt the same way he did. My daughter is now 9 and wants to make a lemonade stand and donate it all to other parents who are in shelters and were in our situation. She brought me to true tears hearing that she wanted to do this and pay it forward in such a way. Before I was homeless I had saved up money and we lost everything within weeks. It broke me up so much. We had lost everything twice in those 3yrs of trying to get back on my feet and I'm happy that we now have an apt where she has her own room when that was never the case. It's a very hard thing to go through and slot of people judge and say, oh you must be a bad parent to put your child in that kind of situation and I'll tell you what. I'd never wish what I went through on my worst enemy. EVER... I'm so happy that this man and his kids are in a better place and doing good.

SlyDoll7 I know a guy who hooked up with girl. She had a child from a previous relationship and they ended up and 4 more children together. It was ok at first but then she started abusing alcohol and then she left him and all her kids, including her oldest who wasn't even his child. Fortunely he had a job that could cover the expenses, but he still needed support in regards to childcare and what not. Fortunately he had parents who were nearby to help with childcare. I met up with this guy a few months later a soccer game for one of his kids. His children are extremely polite and seem well adjusted.

That shows what a good person he is. I had neighbors who divorced, she stayed in the house (with her boyfriend) while he had to leave. He took both kids, his little boy with her and her young daughter with another man. He would bring them sometimes so they could see their mother and had to wait on the sidewalk. She never visited them. I was friends with him, not with her, (I'm an old lady in case people get the wrong idea) so we would talk while he waited. He told me that he took the little girl because he was the only father she ever knew and he loved her as much as his little boy. She was about 4 and the little boy not even two when he left with them. At least he had a nice job.

Shayla Johnson I disagree. It takes incredibly strong will of character to make the decision to go forward and parent any child, especially when one is alone in such a decision. The fact that one child is not biologically his is irrelevant. Such worldview would indicate you look down even upon adoptive parents. Children do not ask to be born to the parents they are born to, but all have every right to be raised lovingly and responsably. Focusing on past mistakes of either parent is unproductive in the present state of raising these children. Your opinion is immature and based in an incredible lack of insight. But I will grant it is your opinion and you do have the right to have it.

I live in Australia and unfortunately our foster care system is also shockingly horrible, underpaid staff, understaff and underfunded facilities or facilities who have been privatised and a growing number of children with an endless list of problems who are given zero assistance or support has lead to a system that is gradually becoming more and more broken with higher rates of abuse drugs, prostitution and homelessness. :,-( It seems like to majority of foster care systems around the world are the same.

The world is hurtful enough, it doesn't do any of us any good to be cruel with words. It's time that we give kindness the importance it should have. I have been in a situation close to this...except my ex-spouse planned his exit years in advance, and I had a child with Type 1 diabetes and a younger child as well. It's been years and my kids are are okay, but the struggles are still there...they change in frequency and type. It's hard to say the least. But bless this man for being the best father he could because so many just walk away. We are paying dearly as a society as the breakdown of the family continues...but hope is always alive we can turn it around.

I wish I had a great dad like this guy. My real dad died when I was 6 1/2 mths old due to a work accident. I barely Remeber him . My mom went nuts and I wound up living with my dad's parents who were wonderful. My gran and papa adopted my siblings (2 older brothers) and I and became fantastic parents to us. Papa was a brilliant man who tried so very hard to be the father we needed and wanted to help us with the usual father type things. Gran was a wonderful lady with a heart as big as the world. She dried tears and cooked much loved meals. I miss them both so much now their both passed on. I haven't seen my birth mother since I was 9. She has tried to talk to me but I find myself not being able to find a place for her in my heart or life. She gave us up got married again and had another lot of kids and never bothered to see us or contact us. Gran and Papa gave her all the chances to do so but she decided not to do anything until they passed on. I think it was just too little too late.

I'm seeing lots of nasty comments about having kids, if it was a woman etc etc.. instead of pointing out his poor misfortune and hope your perfect lives never change cuz they can by 1 decision, 1 loss of job, 1 medical issue and you and your family start snowball effect until you find 1 person or place that can help with kids, jobs, home, car, a lot of stress can happen when a parent gets desperate.. I hope anybody in situation like this or worse finds their way and someone opens heart to them..

KK Smith It's always easy to judge and criticize. I've been through some really bad times, and while I would have never suffered like that voluntarily, I must admit that it changed me, made me more understanding and compassionate. Until you've been there it's hard to understand how you can have it all together, and suddenly one thing can go wrong and mess up your whole life. When I read negative comments I realize those people really believe that if they do everything right nothing like this could ever happen to them. The truth is that we don't know what is going to happen and whether we will ever need help.

Shines a light on the cracks in a system that is in place but lacks funding. How is a parent suppose to get a job, to afford housing, food etc. if no reliable & affordable daycare? Affordable housing is a major challenge in Peterborough besides employment.

That's great. He made me cry. Was he able to find a job and get out of section 8 housing? Once you're in something like that, it's near impossible to get out of it. You are either all the way out or all the way in. There is no 'in between' of help.

Probably you knew some great men in your life and you just sent them to friend zone. Women tend to say there aren't good men around once they get old and the bad boys don't wanna have anything to do with them anymore.

@@babyboy8597 I was widowed young with a small boy. I never was interested in the "bad boys" I'm not looking but I've noticed that a hard working masculine man that priorities family is rare indeed. About as rare as a young woman that finds home making and child rearing fulfilling. The chances of us finding each other are remote. After all, we're busy keeping house and devoted to raising our children while they're working hard at what they do and usually not in the same places.

I had many friends that were in his situation. A Single parent, with basically nothing, wanting to work but has nobody to watch the kids. So they can't really even look for a job..... i stepped up as a friend and a parent myself, and watched their kids for free. (As long as they were actively seeking work and drug free) I made them a deal that I would provide childcare including meals for free for one year. Every one of them were working within 6 months. After the year was up, I kept most of the kids at my daycare and worked out a decent price for the parents to pay without killing them. It wasn't easy but it was a wonderful experience!

Hey beautiful family :) and to all those who turned their nose up calling all kinds of people in the shelter as "shelly kids" maybe it has not occurred to these people that hard times can and will continue to fall onto anyone and everyone (sadly). Maybe the community on a whole can actually be proactive and help in some way....... There are so many different ways we can all help those who fall on hard times.......... Ignorance can be bliss I guess........ Again ANY FAMILY can fall on difficult times please try and help in some way rather than making judgements........ I am so, soooooooo thrilled you guys are on the up and up its wonderful :) it was a Xmas you will never forget awesomeness HEALTH LOVE AND LIGHT TO ALL (the gal from oz)
