As my husband is a Lićan, there always has to be mashed potatoes. Whereas I prefer it with polenta. Either way, it’s the best. Great video!Keep up the great work.

Watching this was just so heartwarming! My baka came to Australia from Slunj in 1970 and she makes sarma pretty much the same as baka here (with the addition/ substitution of minor ingredients) but it was so great to see the kids cooking with baka. I did, and still to this day help her prepare Sarma for special occasions - Christmas, Easter and everything else in between. Thanks for sharing these memories with us all!

Baka je ovog puta zvezda programa.(Ipak se mislim, mozda posle Olivije i Mate 😘) Strpljiva, tolerantna, velikodusno deli svoj kuhinjski prostor. Balkanske domacice su obicno uvek u zurbi i nemaju veliki prag tolerancije za one koji su motaju po kuhinji. 😂😂😂 Znam to po sebi jer sam bila losa uciteljica kuvanja sopstvenom detetu!!! Prezabavan video. Sarma izgleda odlicno. Sigurna sam da je i ukusna!!! U Srbiji se pravi samo malo drugacije: bez belog luka i mleveno meso uvek kratko isprzeno u crnom luku!!!! Bar u mom kraju!

I love this so much. I'm having Sarma tonight and making it on Christmas day too.

It brings me such joy to see three generations of your beautiful family come together preparing and enjoying this traditional dish. I'm Croatian, but my husband is Chinese Canadian. His favourite Croatian dish is sarma. Every year, as soon as cold weather arrives he'll start asking when I'll be making sarma. Even tho he was born and lived here, in Canada, all his life he can no longer survive freezing Canadian winter without sarma.

Oh, Sarah! Thank you so much for this video!!!!! Sarma is my all-time favorite food and it took me years and years of begging to get my grandmother to teach me. It's so much fun to live vicariously through you, Ivan, and your kiddos. I have some sour heads in the freezer. I think it's time to defrost them and make a big pot of Sarma tomorrow! They look very similar to "Malfuf mahshi". In Spanish we call them "repollos rellenos" o "niños envueltos" 😀. I like the Arab recipe but I'd love to taste the sarmas, it seems delicious. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, this brings back memories! Every family has different versions! We cook it in a broth of crushed tomatoes and sauer kraut. No barley, just rice. No pork, instead veal and beef. No extra meat. Our neighbors (heretics!) put in raisins! This is THE comfort food for my Serbian/Croatian family! Hvala!

You havent tried the best sarma until you make it with the mixture made for sausages(meat),home made of course and sarma without mashed potatoes is not the same 😋😋😋😋

I love listening to the kids speak Croatian. They put me to shame. I used to speak fluent Croatian when i was their age and unfortunately lost a lot of it. Good on them! My mother makes one of the best Sarma, everyone loves them, and unfortunately i think that tradition will be gone with my mom.

I make it myself sometimes, but the key ingredients are in short supply or impossible to get. That's the fermented cabbage leaves, and smoked meats. Properly smoked meats are available only in one place in Canada, but that's like five hours drive to get there. I put don't put the barley in it, just rice. Lots of places in central Europe do sarma too, so it's not exclusively a Croatian dish. For example, Italians cook it in tomato sauce (surprise, surprise!). All yummy! It's very much a seasonal dish in Croatia; usually late Winter, early Spring. I once asked for it at a roadside restaurant in Croatia (which are great to stop by) in middle of Summer, and they all laughed at me, "We don't do it now".

It's pretty much how I make sarma when sour cabbage is available. Once it's summer, I make it with either fresh cabbage I boil with a bit of lemon, or with grape leaves, also a great option. The biggest difference though is that there is nothing left after the next day 😁

10ka za trud koji ste uložili da nam prezentujete ovo jelo,ali ja se ispričavam što ču biti kritički nastrojen jer postoji i ukusnija sarma koju mi Makedonci pripremamo.listovi su bili loši i zbog toga je bakica imala poteškoča i ako bi propržili ono meso pa onda zavijali sarmu bilo bi ukusnije.Ipak hvala za ovaj video.
