My mother and her family were Donauschwaben, Svabe iz Hrvatska. She grew up in Bogdanovci and went to high school in Vukovar. The family fled in the closing days of WW II, and I grew up in a refugee camp in Austria. Her village was completely destroyed during the Battle of Vukovar, and 11 extended family members were killed. Bogdanovci was rebuilt, and I have cousins who live there, and I stay in touch with them through Facebook. The in-laws of my father's best friend worked for Graf Eltz, and his wife told us stories of the Dvor (castle). This area was multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-religious. The Intermarriage rate was high. War destroyed that.

As Russian native speaker (for me pronounce number is easier on Croatian language than on English), I say that 100% when you start speak. Local, even if you know language in a better level then that, ask you kind switch on English.

It just means "fact", fakt, but in older times they used to put "a" in those -kt, -rt, -nt endings of latin words, like "dokumenat", "koncerat", "fakat". Dubrovnik area does that also, and "fakat" is also used here the same way as in video.

At the local village schools you see rows of bikes parked. In UK in the '60s and '70s I could never go to school on my bike as it would have been stolen or vandalised.

Ovo što vi sad činite za svoju dicu, vodajući ih po cijeloj Hrvatskoj, učeći ih nekim osnovnim pravilima života i ponašanja je neprocjenjivo. Kao malo dite sa svojom sam obitelji proputovala cilu ex SFRJ i srednju Europu. I kampovali smo. Ostajali smo na odmoru misec dana jer moj organizam ne može da funkcionira bez mora i sunca. Jasno van je da nismo mogli odsjedati u hotelu kao obitelj cili misec iz finansijskih razloga. Poslije kao odrasla proputovala san veći dio Europe i jedna zemlja u Africi. Međutim uvik se vraćam na odmore kad sam sa roditeljima kampovala i bila na moru oko misec dana. I svim vrijednostima koje su mi roditelji usadili kao ditetu. Obavezno napravite neke fotografije kao obitelj i uramite ih. Najvažnije: Iako crkve to dozvoljavaju nekad besplatno, nekad za novce, nemojte se penjati na tornjeve crkvi zbog pogleda. Zato što ste vi tad donjin dilon tila iznad OLTARA a to je nedopustivo. Postoji turizam koji je štetan za ljude a tu spada penjanje na toranj crkve. Božji blagoslov!

To što vas dvoje(Sarah i Ivan) radite lipe poučne interesantne videe, to mi je normalno. Mladi ste obrazovani govorite dva jezika i to ide lipo. Za to ste se opredjelili. Međutim mene vaša dica oduševljavaju kako su lipo vaspitana, kako žele sve da znaju i nauče. Naravno da najstarija kći to radi savjesno i ozbiljno. Nagledam se svakakve nevaspitane dice, pa mi ova vaša dica dođu ka godišnji odmor. Nisu bezobrazna, ne krevelje se, ne histerišu, ne zapovidaju odraslima. I hoće da uberu masline i grožđe i da uče uz baku i didu spremati jela, igrati se oko njih, pomagati na svoj način.👏

Lipi obiteljski obid. Još je lipše vidit kako dica uživaju, kako svako od njih zna šta voli jesti kod bake i dide. Najdraži momenat: Kako se dica sama poslužuju bakinin kolačen. Predivno! 😊

In German there’s a saying “I only understood ‘train station’” when you can’t understand what was said. (Because “bahnhof” is quite an easy word to pick up in announcements, news, etc.) Apparently, in Croatian I won’t even understand “train station”.

I'm from Toronto as well but I'm a bit scared to go as I'm probably going to be the only Asian in the community. But I also don't fit into Asian-Canadian communities at all, which is why I'm trying to be more open-minded for my upcoming trip to Split and Dubrovnik this month.
