As I said in the previous video, this week's cover is a revisit of a cover I did fairly recently. I was excited to see Bury the Light so high on the list, but I had absolutely no idea how to tackle it differently from my first time. The natural approach for me is to just go lower with tuning, but that meant Double Drop D, or 8-string dropped an octave below a normal 6-string drop D. It's not the first time I've played this low, but I was really determined to make it as clean and clear as possible when it came to pitch stability.
To achieve this, I finally picked up Mike Stringer's Mixwave plugin (not sponsored) knowing that Spiritbox plays in Drop F#, it had to be good for this and oh boy was it. I landed on a tone I liked almost instantly and it gave me the inspiration to really lean on Spiritbox influence for this cover as they've been the most influential band on me in the past few years. I took a lot of arrangement ideas from Jaded, with a ton of mix tricks from Circle With Me. I even ended up mixing in the double drop D guitar ANOTHER octave down as well as the bass to make the guitars sound lower than perhaps anything I've ever heard before, let alone mixed myself. It was an incredible challenge in the production phase of this cover.
My last cover of this song was met with a lot of criticism because of my voice. It was tough on me because as a lot of you know, I have rather low self-esteem with my singing and I've been really trying to work to be okay with it, but I took a very growly approach with this then and I could tell by the comments, some people did not like it. Having Lollia take this one is exciting for me because we're flipping the gender of the singer and it really sounds unique and different from the original in a cool way. The comments sections of my videos are usually unnecissarily over-critical anytime I have a vocalist, and I'm sure it won't be different this time. However, I really think we landed on something really cool here, and worrying about pleasing everyone may have prevented me from doing this project like this.
This was reuploaded because the initial video got a large amount of criticism about the vocal mix. The vocals have been boosted in this and I hope it's easier to hear more intricities in Lollia's performance. We took a very different approach with the style of this song, and while it won't be for everyone, I those who enjoy it can appreciate the insane work that went into this.
Bury the Light in 2022 was the last cover I did before breaking my thumb which triggered a domino effect of many really tough trials in my life. I'm hoping that I can bookend that with this truly monsterous revisit to that cover. All that being said, the final cover of your favorite video game songs of all time is just a week away...
And dare is say it, it's going to be even bigger than this one.

I mean, it's kinda thanks to that that we got this even better banger today though. It's like when Sonic movie's reveal got giga trashed on and then we got the actual good version of it. Obv the analogy is a bit more broad since the first version wasn't like the first sonic reveal ofc.

I’d say constructive criticism like saying the vocal mix was too quiet is valid, I didn’t see what people are saying but it’s also not uncommon to see people just saying that a cover is bad without any actual criticism.

The original BtL exudes raw power while this one has a hauntingly almost somber tone which is really cool. I also kinda like that having a female vocalist adds an extra little link to Nero's theme. Like a little familial bond in their themes. I love stuff like that. I didn't get to hear the previous upload of this, but I quite like this version. Jules never seems to miss. Also, Merry Christmas brother

When the chorus hits in the Casey Edwards version, it's like Vergil is running at you because of how hard the vocalist goes. In this version, when the chorus hits, it's like Vergil is *walking* toward you, *imposingly.* Both of those things are terrifying for completely different reasons! Which means you've both captured a really great vibe with this arrangement. You and Lollia did great work here! :D

This cover is excellent. The almost lullaby-like vocals juxtaposed with the accentuated tempo by the heaviness of the instrumentals creates this feeling that is very ominous. Like a looming danger encroaching upon a sanctuary of peace u ready for what is to come. It feels like it could be used as a theme for the end of Vergil’s boyhood, recounting the mere hours before the incident that would take what was left of his family from him. It’s not as “hype” as the original, but it brings its own energy to the table. One that I feel encapsulates a different specific aspect of Vergil’s character.

The orignial cover of Bury the Light is probably my favorite cover you've ever done, especially the vocals. This version though, this one hits different both with the lower guitar riffs making it heavy as all hell coupled with Lollia's kinda of haunting, etherial vocals. You guys absolutely KILLED it, so cool to see two of my favorite musicians collabing for something like this. Keep rocking and here's to more great things to come in 2024 ❤❤❤

I personally loved the version you did with your voice, so I'm saddened to hear that you felt like it warranted a do over (though I'm also glad that you didn't just straight up delete the original). With that said, this version with Lollia is a *killer* remaster! I get inspiration from music for my writing and this cover gives off the *perfect* vibe for one of my projects. Amazing job, absolutely saving to a playlist and listening to it for several hours on loop.

@@Soress9this still definitely isn’t my favorite version, her singing is beautiful, which I don’t think fits the vibe of the song and the lyrics. It’s a ballad of rage and sorrow, and the instrumental still reflects the intensity of those feelings while the vocals don’t. I think her vocals would work great for a piano/orchestral version of the song. I do absolutely prefer the audio levels compared to yesterday’s, though.

People need to chill and remember...this is a Cover song. You want to hear the song "right", then go to the original song and artist. Covers are the other artist's attempt to replicate, modify, or put their own spin on the song. As long as there was nothing malicious in the creation of the cover, respect the decisions made people. Not all covers are going to have that same "something" you are hoping/looking for. And that's the cover artist right to decide how they want to take their swing on the classic. With that said; while I do prefer the original still, I respect the directions and choices made. This was a unique take on the sound and still enjoyed it. Rock on Mr. Jules and Lollia.

Ok so I listened to this version of the song and compared to yesterday the mixing is better, so I certainly can appreciate that. I also went back and listened to your version and man, you sound great. That was over a year ago so currently I am sure that you have the talent to sound just as good or better. Also also I hope you didn't forget that Victor himself thanked you for doing the cover, which is huge because that means, at least I would think, that he recognized your cover of the song as a vision similar to his own in some capacity and enjoyed it. A very unique and awesome cover. It feels like rhythm got changed a little bit and overall song got a lot heavier,which makes this cover stand out from others in a very good way. Lollia's calm voice turning into hardcore screaming in chorus feels incredibly nice for ears and video itself also have big amount of energy,helping the song to be even better. I love that jules was able to be extremely respectful of his fanbase while standing his ground. Regardless of what you thought of the OG mix, if you are gonna be a bitch about it (which a good amount weren’t) he doesn’t owe you shit. On top of that the bad few doesn’t deserve to bury the people just trying to be constructive. Covers were meant to be diff from the OG and if you don’t like it just listen to the OG

Absolutely killer cover, with it's very own unique identity. Fantastic job as usual, and the musical chemistry between Lollia, Adriana, and yourself across your many covers always adds elevation. As far as the over-criticism, I'd imagine a drastic majority of the haters haven't even heard their own singing voice either because they lack the bravery to try for themselves or because they don't have one. Singing is incredibly personal and just putting yourself out there like that is a challenge all it's own. You pick the pieces that suit you well and you do a bang up job at them. Roar of the Spark comes to mind, as well as the vocals in Devil Trigger. Keep getting it man, you're an inspiration dressed in nostalgia and it's nothing but awesome.

As someone who really dislikes when Singers go far out of their Range, I can only say I am absolutely amazed and very, very pleased by the choices you guys made in the Vocals here. Lollia was sticking to what felt comfy for her, and where she had the most oomph and it shows. Her Voice really focuses on "pinpointing" rather than flatout endless brutality, if that makes Sense. That is how I hear it, anyway. The Mix is IMO pretty damn good, and I had no Problems with it in any capacity. I think you guys really nailed a special tone with this one, that is vastly different from the other Covers of this. Way to go. Very much enjoying it. :)

It was significantly easier to hear her this go around. Great job Jules. Now, I cannot believe so many other songs did not make the cut for the top 20. Guile's Theme, Sons of Skyrim, Halo, To Zanarkand, Those Who fight, and so many other amazing songs are still out there. Jules, hear me out. People sometimes treat covers to the same level as the original, not that a cover can't be as good but it's competing against people's affective memory which is generally unbeatable. I have criticisms to this cover just as I have anything but that can't impede me to appreciate what you made, your own ideas and execution. And I specially get you regarding your self esteem with vocals, you're competing with geniuses like Victor Borba so don't sweat it, you'll get there. Remember that there as many if not more people out there that appreciate your covers for what they and aknowledge your efforts and your unique style. Know that you're an inspiration for me and a lot of other guitarists around the world.

Well, never having heard the original upload, I can't judge the difference, but I'm always a fan of Lollia's singing, and she did this song justice. For that matter, I enjoyed your original cover as well. I liked that it was a different take on the vocals, and of course you killed it on the instrumental. So keep your chin up, you ARE the storm that is approaching!

This is a really cool take on it and I love it, though I want to share a thought. I personally loved the original cover you did with your vocals, but I think you just jumped to covering it too early. If I remember right, you were just learning how to sing at the time, and while you were making progress, I feel Bury the Light is a song that would take a LOT of practice and work to get good at singing. I feel if you kept practicing, you could do a killer cover of the song, your vocals and all. If anything, one of my favorite parts of your Devil Trigger cover were your vocals in the beginning. (not at all saying/implying that Adriana was bad, she killed that cover too!) It'd be cool to see you revisit it with your own vocals, but after a loooong time after a lot of practice. It'd be cool to see and compare your progress too! (ofc It's all up to you though, not a problem if you decide against it.)

Didn't hear the original, but I love this! I can see some people complaining if the vocals were any lower than this. But I also get that it can be thematic to the song. I do appreciate hearing both of you all as well as I do in this mix, though! Sorry if people on the internet were jackasses.
