Hey Feli! Question. If American beer such as Budweiser(Bud in Germany) is so inferior to German brews, how can it sell in Germany, labeled with the name “Bud” and elsewhere in Europe? Why market it at all? Interesting that the American Budweiser, developed by German born Adolphus Busch, visited Bohemia inspiring him to develop his Bohemian style lager! 😉

When I was in the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy, we regularly conducted training in Germany. One of our trips, our command team arranged for us to stop at and tour around Munich. We ended our visit at the Hofbräu Haus restaurant. They told us we had a "two beer limit." They had failed to account for the fact that "two beers" in there would be served in those big glasses. That was a really good time. 😁

Hefeweizen is one of my favorite beers, was introduced to it a few years back...straight out of a keg. Found that I get a little sick from some added preservatives/chemicals and ingredients in certain beer, and Bavarian beer usually doesn't have those. Danke, for the purity laws, Germany. Saved me from many future head or stomaches aches lol. Love watching these videos, going to be very helpful when travelling to Germany. I am very familiar with German auto and technology brands (and wording) as the only German car technician/mechanic where I live. However I have always dreamed of seeing the trees and lakes, old style architecture, and visiting Porsche's and Audi's automotive museums. Maybe a flight museum so I can see the airplanes that old original Mercedes and BMW engines were made for. Many of my favorite bands and artists even enjoy touring Germany any time they go. Definitely looking forward to it, hopefully in the near future

My wife and I, along with a few friends attended the Oktoberfest in München for years. Of course, we loved everything about it as well as the beautiful city of München which we have come to love deeply. One of our favourite things at the Okoberfest was trying to sneak the litre mugs from the beer halls and take them home. I have six and my friend has ten! We got caught every so often and they took them from us, but nothing more came of it as I think it's expected. Of course, many stores sold new ones, but it was more fun to take them. So nice to hear the names of the beers pronounced properly as we learned to do. My favourite München bier is also Augustiner-Bräu.

@3:28: Actually although "Sack" does literally mean "sack" or "bag", the "colloquial insult" is taken from another meaning of "Sack", namely "scrotum". I would say a better translation than "idiot" for British people is "sod", since it is also common to say "Du alter Sack" which translates well as "you old sod", or for Australians "bastard" (as in "y'old bastard") is a good translation. When translating swearwords it is important to find words which carry not just the meaning but the strength of the original. An important fact for people who haven't been to the Oktoberfest - and let's hope next year there will at last be a return to normality - you might expect the beer to be weaker than normal beer, since you are drinking litres of it, and many of the visitors have only ever drunk something like Heineken or Budweiser (not to be confused with the real Budweiser from the Czech Republic). In fact, Oktoberfest beer is even stronger than normal German beer but doesn't taste like a strong beer, unlike for instance Carlsberg Special Brew.

I’m an American, and had the best beer that ever passed my lips in a small pub in Singapore. I asked for a dark beer while I reviewed the menu, and was brought a glass and a mostly empty bottle of Erdinger Dunkelweiß. It was so good that I saved the label in my wallet and looked for it everywhere I went. After several years, I found some in my hometown, but it was labeled “Erdinger Weißbier Dunkel” instead. I don’t know if there’s a difference, but it never tasted as good as those few I had overseas. I’ll never forget that moment.

@@captainmubbers6715 well , Erdinger does sell a Schneeweisse, an Urweisse and a Festweisse, it’s therefore not implausible that their dunkles Weißbier was at one point called Dunkelweisse (at least in some places) . That aside, “dunkekweiss” (with out the e) is also a proper German word (meaning “dark white”aka “dirty”) … it’s in the Duden. Check it out… Though in this case it would probably have been a “Dunkelweisse” with the e, or , as it’s now known, a dunkles Weißbier or Weißbier (Typ) Dunkel . With das/ die ” Weiße” merely being Dialekt for a Weisssbier / Hefeweizen. That’s why you can also have a “Cola-Weiße” a Berliner-Weiße and many other types of Weisse.. I therefore call poppycock on your German language lecture.

In the 70's and 80's Löwenbräu tried to advertise heavily for the US market with TV advertising. They made the decision to generally represent the brand as Lowenbrau (without the umlauts or treating the umlauts as decorative) and pronounce it LOW-in-brow to make it more accessible to the American market. That's one reason why it's so tricky-- the brand intentionally marketed itself with that name and the Americanized pronunciation stuck. Although I knew logically how to say it in German, it was a little shocking when I was in Munich and finally heard a native speaker say Löwenbräu.
