What happened with Hattie happened under the old management (the previous owner would not allow Hattie to be buried there because of her race). The present management did try to make things right by reaching out to Hattie's family.

I know what you mean. My nana has been dead since December 27th 2015 and she still has no engraving on her headstone, and my mother can’t do anything about it because she doesn’t have the right, only one of my uncles and aunties do, and there both to lazy and stubborn to do anything. It just really makes me angry, because every time I visit her headstone, I feel like I’m visiting nothing and that she’s not being remembered.

+A&F Gaming : Though she may not have the right to engrave the current stone, she can buy one and have it placed there. There’s some available online that can serve as a “marker” until the permanent one is fixed. I’m like you.... there’s no excuse not to mark someone’s grave. How would they like to be just dumped in the ground to anonymity? I highly doubt that. Yet they don’t take care of people they allegedly “love”? That’s messed up. Unless the deceased expressed their will for NO marker to be erected, a marker should be there. Plain and simple.

Reading up on Edmund Gwenn it seems he had no family to claim his ashes as he was married and divorced early in his life and never remarried or had children. He was a British citizen so he probably had no other family here in the states. H.B. Warner was also a British citizen but he did have three children so I'm less certain on why he doesn't have a marker. They both played roles in my two favorite Christmas movies. Gwenn as Kris Kringle in a Miracle on 34th Street and Warner as Mr. Gower, the pharmacist, in It's a Wonderful Life. I think it's a good idea to start a fund to get these people the markers they deserve.

The actors who portrayed Santa Claus, Mr. Gower & Uncle Billy (Mr. O’Hara) were all in the twilight of their careers at the time of their deaths. It looks as though Edmund Gwenn (Santa Claus) had no known children and had divorced back in the UK 42 yrs before he died. While the rest of his immediate family in England would likely have learned of his passing they likely never claimed his ashes because they probably thought he had made arrangements. Thomas Mitchell (Uncle Billy/ Mr. O’Hara) seems a little more sad, he remarried his first wife with whom he had a child after being apart/divorced for 6 years, so in total they were together 41 yrs (until his death). It is possible that he died intestate, he had children with both of his wives and that both kids, who would have been adults at the time, fought over the estate and his ashes for such a long time that like the real case that inspired Dickens’ Bleak House the lawyers ate up all the money so there was nothing left to pay to get the remains out. HB Warner (Mr. Gower/ Jesus) had been divorced from his second wife for 24 years at the time of his death. They had three children who were all adults at the time of his death but it could be that they were estranged from their father and that is why they didn’t claim the ashes. It would be interesting what it would cost to have them interned in one of the vaults there. Perhaps fans of Miracle on 34th Street, It’s A Wonderful Life or Gone With The Wind could crowdfund to do it.

Once again, Arthur Dark demonstrates that a cemetery need not have green, well-manicured graves to be beautiful. The beauty comes from his substantive narration and the poignant film clips such as that of Hattie McDaniel accepting her Academy Award or the history of Anna May Wong's career. And, of course, the presentation of Dooley Wilson singing "As Time Goes By" made my day. Thank you, Arthur, for another creative masterpiece.

The thought of so many people's remains sitting on a basement shelf, without a remembrance, is extremely sad. Great artists such as H.B. Warner, and anyone for that matter, should have a final resting place.😟 I'd be interested in helping if there is some way the courts and cemetery would allow a group (of non-relatives) to get together and coordinate a resting place for these fine people.🕊 Enormous thank you for the respect & care that you give to all of these individuals and their families; and, for the time & effort in researching the information; and, for all the hard work you guys put into these videos. Thanks Tamara! In defense of the cemeteries, they have no say as to what can be done with remains. Legally, only the family, next of kin, or the individual themselves can make that call. Arthur, yet another excellent piece of work. Thank you. I, and I am certain many others, find your work compelling, sensitive and tasteful. I appreciate the fact that you will visit not only the household-name actors, but lesser-known, more obscure performers. To give these persons a little remembrance and honour is a great and kind thing. (It also serves as rather an education in the history of Hollywood celebrity). I hope, as you mention in your pinned comment, that funds can be raised to properly inter some of those actors forgotten by time, alone without family and deserving of a proper memorial. Again, my thanks for what you do.

I still love The Lone Ranger at age 53 lol. I get up at 430 am so I can catch a couple episodes before work. Mostly I love the horses. I forget what actor sold the horse to the studio that became Silver. It was for 500$ I think. Could you imagine buying that awesome horse for 500$?!!!!!

To be More specific, H.B. Warner played Mr.Gower on its a wonderful life. He and all the others definitely didn’t don’t deserve to be locked in a basement

Rosedale is a great old cemetery, tremendous atmosphere and the best funerary architecture in Los Angeles, many movie scenes have been filmed there. Did you mention that the great jazz pianist Art Tatum was buried here until Forest Lawn Glendale dropped its restrictions? His remains were moved to Glendale, as I'm sure you know.

I think it is too bad that these famous actors like Thomas Mitchell and H.B. Warner don't have proper recognition. And the others, too. I would like to see how much it costs. And don't forget that H. B. Warner was in Sunset Boulevard as one of "the waxworks". You have done a great job, creating Hollywood Graveyard. I can't get enough of it. Thanks!

All your tours are very good, but this instalment had a real poignancy to it, featuring as it did so many of the lesser known Hollywood talents. The extent of you research along with the great photographic portraits and movie posters really is most impressive.

Normally I enjoy your videos & while I did like this as always, I can't help but feel incredibly sad. So many forgotten stars & the cemetery looks horrible. Hollywood is always pouring money into tourist attractions & other projects to draw people in, they need to invest & fix this cemetery. People who helped Hollywood become what it is today are there but they're resting in what looks like a vacant lot. This is a disgrace! Who owns the cemetery? Maybe we all should start a gofundme page to get the grounds fixed up & fix the mausoleums? All of those unclaimed stars should be given courtesy plots or niches & be buried respectfully, not locked away in a dusty store room. If they have no living family, can't someone sponsor them?

In Angelus Rosedale's defense, because of the drought they have opted to limit watering the lawn for conservation. And at Chapel of the Pines, as I understand it, some of the stars in vaultage wanted it that way. But yes, others who went unclaimed or who don't have next of kin can possibly be sponsored and moved and placed in a niche, as happened with Mae Busch and Ann Sheridan.

ShinbiBelldandy I was just thinking about all of those deceased with no family and/no means for a proper interment. Maybe we (meaning Arthur, 😉) could start a program where people could “adopt a deceased star”, like other programs where people adopt a homeless animal or a mile of highway to look after. Anyone interested could donate to their favorite until enough money is raised for a proper burial. (If I lived closer, I would love to start a program like this, but I would be happy to donate, if I knew that the money was being used for it’s intended purpose.) What say you, Mr. Dark?

Oh wow, thank you for replying!! :) I don't live on the west coast, so I wasn't aware of the water restriction (for a few days, we were practically underwater! Maybe we should send it their way!). This also explains the overgrown plants. That's understandable. I can also understand some of the stars wanting to be unclaimed. I guess after decades of entertaining & being in the limelight, they wanted to go away quietly.

Hollywood Graveyard Yep. Certain parts of L.A. can't water the lawns at certain times of the year or during droughts. It's just the way it is. Also, unless you water daily, most of L.A. would look rather brown in the summer. It's incredibly hot and dry here from May through October.

Our unexpected spring rains now give us green lawns. We'll see how long it lasts. For you non-Californians, we get fined if we water too much! Another A+ video...thanks as always!!

The idea of getting the stars that are in the basement of garden of the pines is a good one,but everyone should be aware that it's going to take alot of funds. My family just paid a Virginia funeral home close to$7,000 for my dad's cremation (he died in September 2017 from cancer ) and they wanted close to $2,000 for an urn to put him in -he's in an old wooden box that someone had made into a purse for his mother-my grandmother. So everyone needs to go in with their eyes open.
