These are some famous guitar players who started late. There’s a misconception that learning guitar late in life is harder to do. It’s more difficult in the sense that life is busier and responsibilities are greater, so making time for it takes more intentionality. However, you will not somehow have a limitation on how well you will be able to play based solely on your age.

i haven't noticed much videos you've done with your electric guitar, just wondering if you are going to do more and the differences you find with swapping from acoustic to electric guitar with everything you've learnt from justinguitar and paul davids. weirdly enough i find it kinda difficult to play electric guitar but acoustic i find great, i'm still only what you would class as a beginner, played a few years back and stop for a long while but have recently got back into it

Hit 64 in March and picked up a guitar again after 30 years. I practice every day for about 2-3 hours and am gradually improving, but it’s always a challenge. Just when I get a song down to where it sounds like it’s supposed to, the whole process of learning some new fangled way to contort my fingers starts all over again! I’m hoping by my next birthday that me and my guitar (I named her Sady) are in tune and have a good thing going on. I hope that happens for you as well!

It's good you put yourself a goal. Many young people that start learning guitar in their teenage years often dream about becoming a rock star, impressing girls ect. They want to be as cool as their idols so they dedicate time and effort to become that. Older people often don't have that so setting a goal really helps with motivation. Never give up and you will get your deserved applaud in these open mike nights I am sure.

Started playing when I was 19, but not seriuosly because of University, so I quit at 23 and never touched a guitar for 20 years. Then I started seriuosly at 45, now I an 48 and I play 3 hours per day. During pandemic lockdown 6 or 8 hours per day. With exercise my fingers are much more quick and precise now then when I was 20 but playing only 20 minutes per day. Now I am attending a professional course in a real school not online, because it is fundamental that your teachers listen to you. Cheers and rock on.

I began playing 1 year ago when I retired at 65. I was most inspired by another KZfaqr named Lauren Bateman. She said if you improve 1% a week, at the end of a year you will be 52% better than when you started. I believe she is right. If I can improve another 52% in the next year I might just turn out to be a halfway decent guitar player. Keep practicing. You will get better.

I tried again in my mid 20s but the guitar I had kept braking and going out of tune and I was too broke to take it to a luthier. Johnny Ramone got a Mosrite MK II guitar.. I got a Mosrite MK I guitar which is actually their top of the line guitar, and the pickups are way hotter on mine, like 13k! Sounds way better than the Ramones tone. This thing BLASTS, monster huge tone, like no other guitar I ever played. And it is a single coil vintage 1965 MK I model. Too bad everyone just used it for clean country and surf.. I love those styles, but it has so much more potential to rock out!

I'm 58 & have spent my whole life avoiding learning the guitar. Seriously! I figured, the last thing the world needs is another mediocre guitarist... I've always played music though. Learned trumpet for a while when I was a kid (until an accident wrecked my embouchure), played bass when I was a teenager (until I cut the tip of one of my fingers on my left hand), picked up a harmonica in my 20s & have played one ever since (occasionally for money). Then, when I was about 45, I started learning the clarinet so I could learn to read music, which led to me learning the flute & sax as well, which led to me starting a Diploma of Music (Saxophone) (until I crushed my left thumb in a motorcycle accident) Then, one day a few years ago, I was watching SpongeBob SquarePants (as yer do) when it dawned on me I could play a ukulele & accompany myself on the harp & play Mississippi Jug Band songs... So I bought a ukulele, which led to more ukuleles of different sizes, one of which was a baritone, which meant learning a whole bunch of new names for chords I already knew. Then I found out baritone ukuleles are basically the first 4 strings of a guitar & my world turned upside down! So, I bit the bullet & bought a guitar last Xmas & I've got to say, I wish I had done it decades ago! The way they are laid out constantly amazes me... I'm not saying they're easy to play but they are far more logical than one might expect. So, I'm hooked! I'm making noticeable progress & can now play all the Major & minor chords in all the keys, both open (where possible) & barred AND (thanks to KZfaq) am able to solo (at a basic level) over Major & minor grooves! Next challenge is Travis picking & then alternate tunings & slide... It's never too late! Although, I am a bit worried about losing an arm or something. After all, I've got a history of that sort of thing happening... ;) Thanks for an inspirational video!

I don’t even think 20 is too late. If you spent 5 years practicing, every day for at least 1 hr, you’ll get an awesome level and you’ll be only 25, really young still. I’m 26, started at 18, mediocrely practicing, and still got a very nice level, well, the last two years I really had to commit and start practicing very decently. If I had done that right off the bat I would be better, not doubt. But even when the first 4 years of practicing I was very lazy, and could still get a nice guitar level, I was able to catch up.

Two of these four artists started at 19 and 24 - which is not old by any reasonable definition - that should tell it’s very hard to find recognisable successful artists who started later in life. You can be the first one but you should know that the odds aren’t good

In all seriousness this is encouraging. One of my recent dreams has been to make it big, of course not really because what I really want is to become an accomplished guitarist, and that's what I mean by big. Not the fame. Sounds discouraging.

Wait a second, how come I wasn't on the list? :D I didn't know that about Chuck Berry, just figured he was a music bad ass his entire life. Adding the other guys to my Tidal list to check out. Interesting reads about the others you listed in your comment. It would be interesting to find some "midlife" old farts like yourself that "made it" :D I'm only 46, so I'm still a spring chicken, though my neck feels 89 years old this week :/

Sorry Rich maybe next time 😂 Yes I would like to find some people who are similar age and learned to play well. Might add that to my list, good idea.

I'm a 64 year old man and it is harder to play when you're older don't have the muscle memory capability you do when you're younger because when I was younger I started playing and it was easy but I didn't pursuit cos I was too busy playing the drums

I always loved music but kept telling myself my entire life that guitar isn’t for me as I had a failed attempt to learn classical guitar as a very young kid. Last year I spent a few months living among semi-professional musicians and befriended a band. That inspired me to finally start learning at age 36 around 5 months ago. Never before in my life did I get obsessed with something that much. My goal is to be able to play pub gigs with a band within this year. Getting there 💪🏼

Dude the fact that your list held many African American guitar players really blew me away. I just didn't expevtbthat at all and I can't even explain the impact that just haf on me as a black, self taught guitar plater in America. To be historically acknowledged and included and not overlooked like they didnt exist 👏🏾👏🏾💯Everybody on the list were new to me so I'll be looking them up to learn more but that just blew my mind so i gmhad to comment lol. Thank you.

Joe Walsh of The Eagles picked up the guitar while he was in college. He wanted something to pass the time while doing his laundry.
