I just turned 30 and I find myself wanting to pick up my old teenage dream again, Playing goth punk and wanting to get a band together. I know it's in my head but I feel like I've missed the boat. I always say though 'it's worth a shot'

I didn't pick up the guitar until 35, starting to take it seriously and have a dream I didn't realise I'd had until I was around 37/38. I've sung since I was 8, written poems since 11, song's for a couple of years and I'm just getting started! I don't make a living with it... yet, but I have a dream, the passion, 29 years of writing experience, am learning as much as I can and have the drive to want to work as hard as I can. What we have at our age is our ten thousand hours in a given area, with me it's writing and of course life experiences that most 18-25 year old's don't have because they haven't yet 'lived.' Others, like yourself, have played the guitar for decades and can not only perform, but teach.. then others are amazing vocalists. I've raised a child, have a roof over my head and bills paid.. The thing I don't really have is my health. I've suffered over three decades with mental health issues, two decades of which I've had seizures, but, there are still avenues that we can take to have a 'career' in music. It may take time and patience, but I believe anyone can follow a dream if they have the time, patience and willingness to learn. For me, it's learning everything I can about the 'new industry', learning the guitar, writing songs, and building up to be comfortable enough to start live streaming. From there, I have the possibility to reach an audience of all ages that are doing the same or similar thing. I'm already 'making friends' (not fans), that I have a connection with already.. and they have not heard a single original yet. Live streaming platforms with 'tip jars,' subscriptions, etc.. are popping up all over the place and it's a perfect place for someone like me, or anyone else to have their own platform and the possibility to earn a living from their music. As for 'success', people of our age are not likely to go world wide, play arena's, stadiums, or anything like that.. but we can have a more intimate connection with our audience, interact with them and in a majority of cases make true friends and connections. Call me old fashioned/soppy or whatever, but I define 'success' not being famous or rich, but using music and being myself and making someone smile, connecting with someone, lightening up their day, connecting/uniting a group of people together for the love of the company of one another and of course the music. If I could do that and earn a living out of it, the money is the bonus, reconnecting people together, something we've all but lost over the years, is what music is all about.

I too am 51 and believed a lot of these myths for awhile. Lived in Nashville and drank the Kool-Aid for a long time. But I do music for a living now outside of Nashville. and have a growing fan-base of people my age and older. And they are WAY more loyal than younger fans AND they have the money to buy every piece of music and merch I sell.

I'm as passionate and committed as I would have been aged 17 or even 27 - with the added benefit of hard-fought wisdom, years of experience and some amazing stories that can be told/shared (well, mostly). Just be smart about it.Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

I had the pleasure of seeing Phil Collins in Munich yesterday. He is 68 years old. His son, who played awesome drums throughout the gig, is 18. If you've got it - it really doesn't matter how old (or young) you are.

Some 50 year olds that have well paying jobs have big bucks to buy gear. Imagine how much easier to keep control of your music that is? I have at least 60k in gear that I have just for fun. Someone like me wouldn’t have a problem getting whatever I need to make it. It should be about talent and mainly fun. Nope I won’t leave my day job, I could do both. I can play somewhere 3 days a week and work my day job. Its a hobby that can make you money.. I will enjoy the process and the fun. I have money to provide to my family, its like a new beginning. Everyone should be following their passion. You only live once.

Thank you guys. You have brought back my belief in myself a little. I'm 31 and I often think that maybe I'm already late and hating myself for missing opportunities. I'm EDM producer, dj, but all my projects weren't successful. From other hand I earn money producing music for other artists, companies, but I don't like do it, cause my dream is to be an artist. I feel like I have already lost my chances and my fate is only to be a ghost in this industry. But your video makes me thought, that it's not yet too late.

I just turned 77 on May 5, 2022. Am I too old to have a career in music? Hell no. If you have a gimmick I believe you can become Very successful in music no matter how old you are. I have a gimmick. A few years back I began doing it with theater in a one man where as I glorified old age and people loved it. I learned from my audience that people have hang ups about old because of how our society dread the idea of growing old and they live their whole life dreadfully growing old. But I have been successful in helping many change that way of thinking through my shows. I'm not doing theater these days. I'm doing music. That's where my heart is and I can almost reassure, there is a HUGE growing audience of over 50 music lovers and music buyers that has not been touched. Thanks to baby boomers and now ex generationers who are living like 30 year olders and they're hungry for new music. They're sick of nostalgic stuff. And that's what I write, new music that will hopefully be appeasing to the 50 plus listeners. It's already started with Charlie Wilson & Smokey, Ron Isley and, of course, Bruno Mars,Anderson Paak & Silk Sonic. In a few final words, I use my music as entertainment intergenerationally. I was a child prodigy all set for world domination but pressure and undiagnosed adhd derailed it all. Music is still my first love, obviously, but I've dabbled and never applied myself since. At 48 I'm seriously considering finally trying to do a music degree but I'm not sure if I'm too old...

The problem from my perspective is finding the right people. unless you make it above a certain threshold of "fame" you don't get a foot in the door. You need to get to know relevant people in your scene/genre. Like once you start going on tour with established bands, then you get to know a lot of musicians and those people you can ask "do you know a singer/drummer/etc that might be interested". if you are a nobody in a small country.... good luck finding a bandmembers that 1) want to make the same music as you 2) are determined and professional in their attitude 3) are good musicians 4) don't 200km away from one another. Its like winning the lottery. The challenge is for people who don't know anybody.

My parents didn't allow me to study music at the conservatorie when I was a child. It takes 20-30 years to become a professional classical musician and I'm 30 already. The point was that the tourism industry gives money: I'm broke. By the time I'll graduate I'll be so old I'll be forced to retire. They made study something I never wanted and I said many times that I didn't want to study. Now I'm stuck in a a career path I hate. It's worthless now. A job that you hate so that you can have what you wished was your profession as a hobby is no way to live. It's f*cking worthless to me. My narcissistic parents destroyed my dreams and they are going to pay for it.

Think about it: does your guitar care how old you are? Does that song that wants you to write it care? Nope. BIG nope. Age, schmage. I'm a feisty, independent thinker, and a free spirit. If I want to do something, I do it. I guarantee, your age matters a lot less than you think it does. Don't be like these people I see on Twitter asking "I'm ( ). Am I too old to..." I always tweet back "No. Think for yourself."

Watching this the day before my interview for a job position (FT Paid) in the MB. I got my Diploma in MB in the UK at 33 y.o, was offered to carry on with a research project... after summer 2020, I declined the offer and related funding FO THIS SAME FEAR those amazing guys are talking about. THAT WAS ONE OF THE WORST DECISIONS I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE! I'm all about conceptualisation, so that course would have suited me quite well. But I was thinking I needed to learn more about marketing, and now I'm juggling other 3 advanced classes in PPC, Digital Marketing, SEO writing. Still, without the music application and implication, I'm just not ignited. If you are a creative person, the straight-up corp world will kill u. So again, do not give up!

I am a veteran. I had a whole career in another field. When I quit my job and began playing open mics every night at the age of 30, people told me I was insane. Now I'm feeding my kids by off a touring paycheck and my future is bright. I played guitar all my life, but it only became a profession these past three years. Now I am touring with huge bands and getting paid. It is a lot of work, but it is possible.

The problem with older musicians has nothing to do with age. If your music isn't current, well-written, and performed sharply, it won't succeed. You need all three of those to be tops. But rarely are older musicians interested in being current. It's great that you can play Dark Side of the Moon and Tom Petty. Yes, they still have listeners, but would they have made it today? An older musician who writes current-sounding material, and plays it with some heart, some power and some finesse can succeed, they will see no barriers to any level of success.

It all depends on your musical level. If you are lets say 30, 40 or more and you ve been playing your instrument for a long time and you are good you ll probably get a gig. Of course probably not in a band of 20 year olds but for sure in a band of musicians around your age.

im 36. my entire life has been grinding poverty, jobs that paid shit, just awful jobs. busted my ass forever, rarely got even a small break. amps would blow and id be forces to sell them as-is for nothing. shitty hand me down laptop would break and id lose all my music. staying in slumlord apartmentts. ive got every skill imagineable by neccessity but when tour prents and everyone around tou is just as broke, life is a very different ride. if your car breaks down its a chain reaction and then you are completely homeless. Now ive got two vehicles, two gibsons les pauls an ableton rig, and a great apartment. Now I can finally play, this was the plan, every day all along. This is how long it took. Nothing but struggle and loss and not a single fucking opportunity dispite busting my ass and being smart and skilled. Before anything else, get a skill like welding or tech support, carpentry ect. You cannot depend on tour friends and your band. They will let you down. get a job, a nice place to live, save your money and be the boss in charge of your musical direction. You will magically find the other musicians who have nice basement studios and their life together. You wont make it on the streets. the rockstars you admire often had parents who were well off and a lot of things were handed to them. dint be fooled by their image, theyve been bailed out a million times and youve probably worked harder to get some gas in your car then they have their entire life. find a trade, build your rig, dont waste time with people who dont have their shit together.

what do you mean by a career? i'm 79 and i'm in 2 bands. one band is a six piece with 2 girl vocalists plus myself and the guitar/leader who also sing. we're still doing the 60's thru the 90's rock and roll scenario. my other band varies between a 3 piece (with me playing keyboard bass and keys) and a 6 piece in which the drummer becomes the front person and we have another drummer and a bass player who plays guitar (in the 3 piece). we play mostly for fraternal organizations (eagles, elks, veteran's organizations. and senior centers) and have been busier than i have ever been in any of my earlier bands. i have been playing in bands since high school in the early 60's. sometimes i have played music to supplement my income while having a day job. other times i have solely depended on playing music. i retired from my day job 7 years ago and consider my music playing as an avocation as well as a hobby. so, am i pursuing a career in music? btw, the rolling stones got together about the same time as i got into my first band.

Im 27 and restarting my music career. I do mostly rap/alt some melodic rap. Is it too late? By the time I blow up Id most likely be 33-34. It could happen before then too but im just giving myself the most amount of time by estimating 33-34. IT IS TRUE age, fear, "feeling too old for (fill-in blank for your circumstance)" - are not real aspects of our universe! Age does not exist. So, learn what only you are here to do. To identify if a thing like being a fuller musician is your purpose right now - as in, a musical form or job at ANY AGE - it's oddly easy. In order to be able to accurately decide to pursue any thing, define and decide who you are and what specifically-you can willingly do. You can do it by following simple steps: 1. Find a place you will more likely than not be left in peace at a minimum-30 minutes. 2. Consider the thing you've been considering an awful lot about these days by considering it never existed - not even a little - throughout your life. Then consider it never existing in a next life. 3. Without over-rationalizing any thought that comes to mind answer - as simply as possible - the question, "Would I still exist without it?" If "Yes" is the answer, you're onto a life-helping answer. If "No" is your answer, you're also onto a living solution. 4. For "Yes" answerer: Are you certain your universe can sustain forever (as it has) without this personal idea/thing/interest ever existing? If so, how ably would it exist without it? If you wish, in the upper Search box, copy/paste " universe-sustaining-laws plus their humanely-uplifting-forms " 5. For "No"-er answerer: If all of life might suffer even some without the thing existing - the thing, that us, that you're trying to make a decision about in order to make your next move - be assured it IS an essential part of your (and all) reality. Started singing at 7 and professionally at 19. I stopped at 22 because I would constantly find myself in the hands of exploiters. I'm now 32 and have recently gone back to doing music. I honestly feel terrible that I lost my best years because of other people. And it makes me a little upset because I was so good and made people cry whenever I sang. But then I remember that I was way too young and was dealing with years of childhood trauma from bullying and emotional abuse. It honestly feels like it's too late, but I still sing, write and produce because it makes me happy. Great video though!
