My hearing aid story: I have a small amount of age-related hearing loss, but also very strange hearing and speech processing, probably related to central nervous system damage related to basilar migraine. Long story short (too late), my uncorrected speech acuity in the midst of competing noise is 16% of normal. Not only can I not understand what people are saying, but also my hearing can be very painful, especially at certain frequencies. When all these symptoms started showing up about 15 years ago, I was told there was nothing anyone could do for me. Then, about 2 years ago, I was in such pain and having such a hard time understanding people, I sent out a bunch of Hail Mary emails to random audiologists asking for help. One woman responded. She finally performed the hearing tests with competing noise that I'd been trying to find for years, and provided me with exquisitely customized aids that not only make my hearing far less painful, but have also got my speech acuity up over 60%. I'm still amazed. (Apparently, some of this technology is less than a decade old!) So, hell yeah, hearing aids make a difference. Thanks so much for your work with this charity!
