Once you watch Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left album/tour you will gain an elevated respect for RUSH. no tracks!! no loops!! no overdubs!! just 3 incredible musicians ... Alex playing 6 and 12 string guitar and Moog bass pedals, Geddy playing double neck bass, singing, playing Moog bass pedals, keyboards, and Neil ....Neil playing an entire percussion section.... simply incredible !! I loved it when I was in the crowd on that tour in 1981 and I really enjoy watching people discovering them now.

Ha, not only does he play the bass while he sings, he's usually playing foot-pedal keys at the same time. For an easy intro into his voice, I'd check Working Man live in Cleveland. Just a freaking banger of a song

Not only are these three guys virtuosos on their respective instruments, but they are masters of composition. They pull it together in a way that makes three people sound like six when live. They put out 19 albums over a 40-year run, so the song you hear will reflect the decade it’s from. They purposely evolved their style every couple of albums so they wouldn’t become stagnant musically. YYZ is from 1981, and they often put an instrumental track on albums. I’ll suggest the studio version of Freewill. It’s from 1980, so similar timeframe as YYZ. The song will give a good example of Geddy’s voice, and demonstrates how a Rush “guitar solo” is more of a three-way shred fest. And I don’t think most Rush fans will say “I told you so.” More like, “Welcome. Pull up a chair. We’ve been waiting for you.” Lol. Cheers!

There's always a new layer/level with RUSH. Geddy evolved his vocal style, later on. Listen to "The Garden" live. It s the last song on the last album they ever made before Neil (R.I.P.) left us far too soon. The music is beautiful, Neil's lyrics are profound, and yes, Geddy's vocals are very emotional and tender. Chokes me up every time.

Rush is a three piece orchestra... Alex works a separate set of foot-pedals and occasionally plays keyboards. Neil even has time in his busy drumming to have some keyboard triggers on his drum kit. Geddy's voice changes over the years, the early power-banshee year in the 70s, the best years in the 80's and in the later stages he toned it down due to wear & tear.

Here’s the thing about Geddy’s voice: he’s as good a singer as he is a bassist. His pitch is impeccable, his melodic choices are interesting, and his control is amazing. It’s his timbre that’s turning you off, like it has many others. I promise, it will grow on you :) And yes, he sings and plays simultaneously. One of the most mine blowing examples of this, imo, is Marathon. Check out the live performance from The Time Machine tour.

Rush. A trio of virtuosos who wrote some pretty complex progressive rock, but not so noodley or over the top. The had many many tunes play in regular rotation on rrock stations then and classic rock stations till this day. Just three guys. I suggest you watch the official videos for Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Spirit of Radio. Those will not only seal the deal, but illustrate what three incredible songwriters and musicians are capable of doing before auto tune, Protools, etc. Just three guys doing their thing the way they wanted. No bows to pressure from record companies for hits. They did what they wanted, how they wanted, and hoped others would enjoy it. Turns out millions of us did and supported them through a 45 plus year career, 19 studio records. And countless tours. WELCOME!!

Earthshine from the R30 tour Natural Science from the Molson Amphitheatre Toronto Caravan from the Time Machine Tour. Also, one of their masterpieces La Villa Strangiato official music video. RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

Great reaction! I am glad to see that you both enjoyed it and I would love to see you react to more Rush. They have over forty years of material for you to choose from (there are 19 studio albums alone). As many others have commented I am also going to recommend the song "Xanadu" the live video from their 1981 "Exit Stage Left" tour (link below). That performance is a great example of just what these three guys are capable of. Even if you still do not care for Geddy's voice I bet you will be blown away to see him play a double neck bass and 12 string guitar combo while singing and playing keyboards with foot pedals. Alex also plays a double neck guitar and Neil plays a huge drum set and almost every orchestral percussion instrument known to man. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNt4hpCYz7PNhqs.html

“Kinda seems like they don’t need you to be their fan” - now that was both funny and on point. As a kid of 13 taking up the drums in 1980, I remember “putting up with Geddy’s voice” at the beginning. I mean, I wasn’t about to ignore Neil’s drumming. But in a fairly short time I grew to love and appreciate his singing. I’ve found that it oftentimes takes me a little time to acclimate to different and unique voices. The same thing happened when I started listening to the Smiths, it took a little time for me to appreciate and ultimately love Morrissey’s voice.

The movie you are talking about is "I Love you, Man". "My friend from the Navy is a die-hard Rush fan." Most Rush fans are die-hard fans. Do you know why that is? Because Rush is an amazing ascendant experience. If you listen to them, I mean really listen, you can hear your life. Neil Peart was an amazing lyricist, and he wrote about things that we all hold dear. It connects with us all in a very deep and personal way and ascribes meaning. Geddy plays the bass and sings at the same time. He is also the keyboardist. I think you might like Geddy's voice in some of their later work. Try The Garden live in Dallas. It is a softer side of Rush that came about on the last track of their last album. Just a thought. Some things are an acquired taste, and Rush is a taste worth acquiring. That being said Geddy's voice grows on you and you start to see the beauty in it as you listen.

Some after thoughts... There is a documentary of Rush's road crew setting up for their show in Rio. A lot of content but it takes about 16 hours for them to set up. Neil of course plays drums and has a lot of percussion instruments in his arsenal. Some drums have sound cues he can que. Alex along with playing guitar has foot pedals and quite an impressive arsenal of his own for electronics he can switch with his feet. Geddy, same thing. Bass, vocals, synth, keys in general and pedals. Don't miss their clothes dryers and in later years chicken roasters right out there on stage with them.

‘Kinda seems like they don’t need you to be their fan.” Funny she would say that. Rush had that attitude from early on. Their 2112 album album was under firm request from record company to have playable radio songs like Bad Company. But, instead, First song is one whole side. An entire epic with multiple movements and deep philosophy. Only a few minutes of that side aired as temple of syrinx. Lol. So Rush has been nicely saying. ‘Thx for the suggestions. But, we got this’. For long time. Btw, it’s spoken, ‘YY Zed’. Yes, even for Americans. 😅

I didn't like Rush's earlier releases because of Geddy's voice. But being a young drummer (at the time), and obsessed with Neil Peart, I "forced" myself to listen to their earlier music so I could learn to play the drum parts. The more I listened, the more I liked it. That being said, Geddy's voice really came into it's own in the 80's and 90's I think his vocal performances on the albums Power Windows, Counterparts and Roll the Bones are amongst his best. And would more than likely be right in your wheelhouse. Then migrate slowly back and listen to anything off of Exit...Stage Left. The whole release is a masterpiece.

Early on, Rush very much used Led Zeppelin as an influence, and early on Geddy's voice was compared to a cat caught in a mechanical device by the music press. Songs from their early albums like "Anthem" or "Bastille Day" had Geddy at "full screech!" But his later vocals had him mellow, and by 1979 or 1980, his voice really began to mature into a more relaxed sound.

Give The Pass a listen. There are several live versions on KZfaq. The pace is much slower, and Geddy doesn't sound like he's using helium to sing it.

check out 2112 I feel it is his best example of range, tone, beauty. A 20 min song with 7 parts is well worth the time. Also, Spirit of the Radio, Fly By Night, Limelight to name a few.

I subscribed for the Rush uploads, keep em coming thx. In regards to Geddy's voice, I honestly feel due to bad reviews in their early years put a label on him that are in fact not true. It just takes one critic to write a bad review and the next thing you know, it takes off like wildfire. I've listened to almost every Rush song released and have never come across a song where his voice is screechy except maybe the song 2112. 2112 is a Rush epic that's 20 mins long. In the song Geddy sings in two voices to reflect the characters (priest and protagonist). The way he sings the priest's lyrics is very high pitched and I'm sure if the critic that reviewed the concert or album wasn't paying attention to the lyrics, might be wondering why does he sing like that. Regardless, when you go down the Rush rabbit hole, you'll see the label of Geddy's voice is absolutely no true.

You guys are fun! There seems to be 2 schools regarding Rush - The Fans and The Haters (Haters gonna hate). The people who hate Rush usually site Geddy's voice as the main reason. Whatever. We Rush Fans are ok with that. We don't understand, but we're not gonna hate on the Haters. Loved the School of Rock reference, BTW! Great flick! Oh, and we told you so Eddie, LOL! Appreciate you! On to your next reaction...

Another instrumental worth checking out is La Villa Strangiato. And if you want to tolerate a bit of the voice with some great musicianship there's also Natural Science. Finally, if you respect Neil Peart remember he wasn't only the drummer, but also the lyricist. One of my favorites of his sets of lyrics is Time Stand Still. The video for it is goofy and 80's looking, but after Neil died the US Army band did a cover of it in his honor. Check that out if you'd like an amazing rush song without Geddy. But I do hope you enjoy some of the greats mentioned above. Have fun exploring the huge catalog!

First, your thumbnails are so colorful; when you list all your videos together, it's a work of art. Who makes those? Second, I did watch your Xanadu review, so I know when Kayla thinks she first heard Geddy's voice, and that was fun to watch..... However, you did say that you've seen, I Love You Man, so she technically she did hear his voice before this. Not a criticism - just a fun fact.

Like the reaction, good to see you have opened your mind to the greatness of Rush! I also recommend Xanadu from Exit Stage Left, and also recommend Spirit of Radio live or studio, 2112 in seven parts, its a full album side and 20 minutes in the studio version. Some of the live versions leave parts out to shorten it. The best studio version is kzfaq.info/get/bejne/at2hobWKvtjcYX0.html all the lyrics and some additional text explain the story well.

Maybe I'm a little bias, because Rush is my all time favorite band. I have had the pleasure of seeing them 17 times starting with the power windows tour when I was 16 years old. But regarding Geddy's vocals, I'm sure it can be startling at first since he has such a high pitch, however, the appreciation is definitely acquired over time. If you keep listening, you will soon realize that no other voice could ever compliment the complexity of the music. You will come to understand that his voice is just another Rush instrument. Geddy's voice is absolutely perfection intertwined with Master musicianchip

Early Geddy…finding his voice…screechy. Late Geddy (after 40+ yrs) trying to sing their early category..struggles a bit.. the 30 yrs in between…. Iconic vocals. For some prime examples try…Available Light, Afterimage, Losing It, The Garden, Red Sector A, but prolly start with Subdivisions or the Analog Kid…
