The opening is actually Morse Code for YYZ (which is the call sign for the Toronto airport, where they always came home to after their tours) :) Peart's kit: you need to go find one of the videos of one of his drum solos to understand just how well he does, indeed, use every part of that kit. Lifeson is *criminally* underrated.

Totally ! Neil plays the drums like a lead instrument. Alex can make his guitar sing. Geddy sings his vocals like an instrument, often being an octave above or below what he is playing on the base. This band is freaking amazing.

Let me help with the Alex Lifeson thing if you will humor me. Alex is not just sneaky good, he is sneaky legendary. First off, he has to not just fit in to that madness, he has to make his own mark. And his writing skills are simply unmatched in my opinion. When listening to Rush songs, attempt to ignore the drums and bass and really listen to what Alex is doing. He, in my opinion, is the biggest reason for Rush's success. He is the one that takes all that lunacy and warms it up with his tirelessly original and emotional work. And to top it all off, every once in a while he says, "Guess what, I can play stupid fast as well!!" In my opinion, far and away the most underrated guitar player ever.

Alex Lifeson is, without doubt. The most underrated guitarist. In the height of his own fame, an interviewer ask Eddie Van Halen what it felt like to be a guitar god. His reply: I’ve no idea. Go ask Alex Lifeson.

RUSH was a progressive band with roots in bands like Genesis, Yes and ELP. Their time signatures are off the charts on some tracks and it's amazing musicianship in full. Especially from a 3 piece. Neil Peart was the greatest drummer to walk the planet. RIP

Watched Rush at Wembley Stadium in 1983 and Neil threw his sticks up 50 or so times and never ever dropped them during that show. It was mesmerising to watch during what was a very fast paced 2.5 hour set

Alex is amazing. Not your traditional gunslinger but as a prog 3 piece he has space to fill. His hero is Jimmy Page of Zeppelin but the way he writes his parts is more David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Alex doesn't try to impose his will or his tone or 'attack' all the time. His parts are to fit the song, which is why Alex doesn't really have a signature tone nor style. He plays everything and uses what he needs for the song.

I've seen RUSH a number of times from 80's to 00's, always a special time, even when they got synth. heavy. They have a number of instrumentals to show off their incredible skills. The fun thing about Niel's kit, and the reasons for some many things to hit, is the whole kit thing spins. The back has become the front of kit, a lot of the times it's for his drum solos. The backside has a smaller kick drum than usual along with different sounding toms and such. La Villa Strangiato is another killer instrumental.

Alex is an instrument rated private pilot and came up with the idea for the song. As others have mentioned, YYZ is the morse code identifier for the Toronto airport. The movements in the song correspond with the different phases of approaching the airport and shooting an instrument approach all the way to landing and engine shutdown.

With regards to whether or not Peart needs all of the drums... watch one of his drum solos... There's a trick to the kit... :) Yes, it's absolutely the case that Lifeson is under-rated, because he's always standing beside two giants. But the man had more guitar tones, beautifully used, than almost any other guitarist I can think of. Completely self-trained, he was never boxed in by music theory, which is why you hear some of the oddest and most creative sounds coming from him. Rush is absolutely math rock, but where Porcupine Tree may have emo elements, they're an emoish prog band, that absolutely follows in Rush's footsteps. Gavin Harrison and Neil Peart interacted a lot, in fact. Radiohead probably wouldn't have been who they are without the Rush influence. Rush's music is diverse, so they influenced pretty much every real musician in rock that followed. So you're not wrong, but it's a bit of a diffuse point.

The whole point to a channel like this is as we all know is to watch a person who is not familiar with, react & give their opinion to music outside their interest. I'm not into emo to know their influence tree. But if they were influenced by Rush, good for them. Another ones that were clearly influenced by Rush are Dream Theater AND Animals as Leaders, both have absurdly good drummers. I find it funny because for me Emo has such melodramatic or depressive lyrics, and Rush is quite the opposite, upbeating, sometimes epic inspired, music. If you want to prepare for 2112, go to the beginnings of Rush and hear Fly By Night or Working Man, but pick the shorter version, there are inifitely largely medley versions of Working man around, reagee versions, and you name it. You heard Xanadu, that song already show the potential. La Villa Strangiato is a superb instrumental if you need convincing about Alex Lifeson capabilities, but I totally follow your thinking about he's being the lesser on the trio. Anywhere else he could be the head.

The intro is Morse code for YYZ, the airport code for I believe The Toronto airport. You do a nice job, and seem to have a clue. Rush are the grandfathers of Prog. If you eventually do 2112 make sure to do the version with the comic book background. 👍

Have you figured out why many of us feel that the Ladies of Band-Maid are one of the inheritors of RUSH? When you do 2112, there are 2 versions, one with an animated "Movie" which follows the song lyrics, the other is just the song. And RUSH is one of the original Progressive Rock Bands. Just listen to Bytor and the Snow Dog to understand that. And Neil used 100% of his drum kit. It used to be much larger, until he was able to get digital instruments to replace certain percussion instruments. You need to put together a "Prog" scale.

@jeffk1482 Trust me, the full breadth of Band-Maid's discography is over 130 songs currently. They just finished recording their newest album yesterday, in fact, and I and many, many others, are awaiting our opportunities to pre-order it. Their music ranges from Pop-Punk to Hard Rock bordering on Metal, with Classic Rock and Southern Jazz Rock vibes. Until I accidently heard their song Freedom by forgetting to turn off auto-play on KZfaq one day, I basically was only listening to RUSH, Styx, The Who, Boston, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and other old classic rock standbys. Once I heard Band-Maid, my ears were reopened to new groups and old. I have found over a dozen other Japanese bands I enjoy and several dozen bands from my youth that I had never even heard of. Mysterious Flying Orchestra, Flying Island, Missus Beastly, Trace, Automatic Man, Aynsley Dunbar, Caldera, and many, many, many more. So please give the Ladies of Band-Maid an honest listen. Too many people say that either because the lyrics are not in English or because of their Maid Uniforms, they can't take them seriously. I would ask you #1 to consider the vocals as just another instrument the first few times you listen to their music. THEN, start to pay attention to the lyrics. And the Uniforms are to play with your/our expectations. What you see, 5 young attractive women, is NOT what you hear. You expect cutesy pop music, what you get is Hard Rock with some pop/punk overtones that is in your face demanding you to pay attention to the skill and artistry of their performance.

@@greylocke100 Like I said, now I’m feeling compelled! Damn. LOL I certainly don’t care about lyrics not in English. I *always* treat vocals as instrumentals - they’re the FIRST instrument after all; and though to me a great turn of phrase of is wonderful, sometimes lyrics can be potent and beautiful even if you don’t actually understand the words. A recent case-in-point for me: Helvegen by Wardruna. They’re a new-ish Norwegian folk group, and I dare *anyone* to listen to that song and not be attacked by the “onion ninjas”. To me it was Band-Maid’s stage gimmick (costumes) that made me avoid them. For whatever reason it struck me as a bit “pervy”. Given your other listed choices in music though and thoughts on their styles, well, seems like I’m going to have to get past that.

Really any of their videos on their KZfaq Channel. If you want to just hear a good song with no video, go to their releases tab on their channel and there are 3 I listen to daily. Under their Just Bring It album, Freezer. Under their YOLO single, the B-side Unfair Game, and under Shambles, the song Shambles they wrote for the Netflix Anime "Kengan Ashura".

The opening of the song is YYZ in Morse Code. It is the indicator code for the Toronto International Airport. Neil and Geddy heard it when Alex who is also a licensed pilot was flying them back to Toronto. I think the next song you need hear is La Villa Strangiato You will hear the genius of Alex Lifeson. Please do the official music video. Neil Peart's drumkit rotates. He uses both during his drum solos. Cheers

Next song to prepare you would be Natural Science. But, if you wanted to get seriously old school about it, you would instead listen to Fountain of Lamneth (which was basically a trial run for the concept manifested in 2112). PS - Their best instrumental work still lies ahead of you.

I don't know about maffrock/emo but Rush are one of the most popular, innovative prog bands of all time. Between jaw-dropping musicianship, imaginative lyrics and complex arrangements, the Toronto trio are the patron saints of brainy, technical, ambitious rock & roll

Rush had 19 albums over 40 years. Their influence is far-reaching, so no doubt they influenced some emo bands. They purposely pushed their musical boundaries over the years, never settling in past formulas that brought success. Therefore, the sound you hear will reflect the decade it came out. What’s really mind-blowing is that by the end they were listening to a whole slew of bands they had influenced. You can hear it in their later work. I’d suggest checking out Headlong Flight from their last album, released in 2012. You can hear how they went out - with a friggin’ bang! Cheers!

Thanks for reacting to this fun video! I love how enthusiastic the audience is and of course, Rush's musicianship is amazing! Regarding Alex, I have to say that a lot of reactors tend to minimize his talent and some of them even forget his name! This is consistent with a lot of Rush reactors, which confuses me because the band only has three people in it. That said, there are so many great Alex solo moments in Rush songs. I personally like seeing live versions where you can watch him perform them. Among my favorites are: La Villa Strangiato, Official Music Video or Live from Cleveland; 'Mission' live from Birmingham in 1988 and 'Between the Wheels' live from the R30 tour in Germany.

k, bear with me on this one, cuz i got a few thoughts .... while i've never thought of Rush as "emo" , if someone were to label them as "godfathers of emo" or someshit, i don't know that i'd argue with them. the guitar do be a'twinkling and sometimes the vocals do be a bit overwrought. but that's just my 2¢ though, i've never associated prog with emo ; but if i squint hard enough, i _think_ i can see the correlation (in a "a➡b , but NOT b➡a" sort of way ... idk if that makes any sense) speaking of counting odd times .... i triple-dog-dare you to try to find the count on Dream Theater's _Dance of Eternity_ 😉 (k, now i'm just being a smartass) and speaking of DT and ridiculous time signatures ... funny you should mention Danny Carey -- if you would want to see a drummer get tortured, check out Drumeo channel with Mike Portnoy trying to learn Tool's _Pneuma_ . or Jordan Rudess trying to learn _Woven Web_ by Animals as Leaders. (to be fair, both those videos may be a bit long for channel viewing, depending on how industrious you want to get with editing or just simply how patient you may be)

For a build-up to 2112, I might suggest the following '70s songs as a good progression to lead into it: A Farewell to Kings => Xanadu => La Villa Strangiato => Cygnus X1 => Cygnus X1 Book 2 => 2112. Bear in mind that Cygnus X1 Book 2 is only a little bit shorter than 2112. However, both of those songs fly by really quickly, despite being pretty long.

I keep saying that Lifeson is underrated - despite everybody agreeing that he's a great guitarist - because he's 'only' the guitarist in a band that has such outstanding talents on bass and drums. One might tend to take him for granted, next to those guys. Every now and then, Alex reminds us why he's in the band, though, and you won't forget for a while. If you want to see and appreciate more of him I recommend "La Villa Strangiato" and the 2011 live version of "Working Man" if you haven't checked them out yet.

Every musician in this band is, or was, top-notch. Alex Lifeson is an excellent, versatile rock guitarist - absolutely one of the best I’ve ever heard or seen live. They complement one another perfectly. I can see no connection with Emo whatsoever; they started as a hard rock band, very influenced by Zeppelin. They emerged as, possibly, the original progressive metal band with the genre breakthrough album, 2112. This was reinforced by the follow-ups, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. The next album, Permanent Waves, saw another transition in their style, bringing in a more commercial sound while maintaining strong progressive elements. 2112, the track, is what it is. Apart from being long, no one need prepare for it. If you felt the need, maybe Xanadu off the Farewell to Kings album would work, or Jacob’s Ladder off Permanent Waves - something along those lines - but why not just do 2112 and continue with those others as mentioned. They are part of Rush’s progression.

Rush is all about transitions and the time signatures in their songs often change, and sometimes frequently; they also change keys, and tempos. YYZ is usually instrumental, though there is a version in which Geddy Lee does sing a few stanzas of a Yiddish children's poem. If you're dipping your feet, there are plenty of good songs to start with like La Villa Strangiato, Spirit of Radio, Tom Sawyer, and Limelight. As you get deeper in, you need to check out their epic tales because they really shine in the songs in which they tell tales like By-Tor and the Snow Dog, Xanadu, Cygnus (which is done in two parts on two albums), then you get to 2112! Oh, and the reason Alex is often lost in the discussion is Geddy often plays bass, keyboards, sometimes guitar, and sings; some songs he does two or three of those at the same time.

If you really want to see Neil Peart use EVERY drum, watch “Der Trommler” - a drum solo recorded in Frankfurt, Germany on their 30th anniversary tour. It’s a near 10-minute tour de force of how entertaining and melodic drums can be.

Build up to 2112....id say Natural Science, live of course. If you do 2112 then there is a great version with a cartoon. Also, do some reading up. If you know the background to how it came to be written then everything drops into place as you listen.

Rush are more classic prog. From the music book Rush Complete vol 2, intro is 5/4, then a mix of 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, 5/8, 6/8 and in some parts those time changes will be every bar! If you’re looking for another insanely talented drummer then look at Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater!

A lot of bands where influenced by Rush, especially after listening to 2112. The song you just listened to is actually YYZed, Canadian don't ya know. 😀Also Neil Peart is pronounced, Peert, so many get it wrong because of the spelling. Try not to count time signatures when first listening to a Rush song, it will turn your brain into a pretzel, especially when the strings and the percussion are on different time signatures. 😂 Give a listen to Tom Sawyer.

The reason the time signatures are not working out for you at 5 beats is because it is alternating between 5/4 and 4/4.

Also try Roundabout by YES. They heavily influenced Rush - which you can hear in the complexity, layering and transitions. So much so that Alex and Geddy inducted YES into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And Peart is pronounced with the Canadian diphong that sounds more like "Peert" and not as "Purt." One more wee thing: the Z in YYZ, is pronounced to sound closer to "bread."

I was so curios about what you were hearing in an Emo band that sounded like Rush. I chose Meet Me in St. Louis and you know I can actually see why you would say that. They certainly may have been influenced by Rush but Rush began mid 70s and there is no such thing as Emo. Punk would be the closest but Punk is nothing like Rush. Rush are Progressive Rock. There are many people who identify Neil Young with Grunge.

@@markabusireactions Oh I never took it like you did actually I was just curious what you were hearing and yeah the odd time signatures are there, the guitar tone is there and the heavier part of the song I heard sounded like Fly by Night Rush actually you may wanna listen to that track.
