The last discussion between Dr. Loper and Catherine is chilling. "He deserted me", Catherine tells her father after he praises her for breaking the engagement. Ms. De Havilland was so deserving of the Oscar for her portrayal of Catherine Loper, a socially awkward heiress in love with a gold digger. Love the ending when she tells the maid, "bolt the door Mariah", leaving Morris banging on the door. Always thought Bette Davis was overrated as an actress. In my opinion last weekend we lost the best actress of Hollywood's Golden years. RIP Olivia

I got the movie. She's fantastic indeed. But it's not Catherine "Loper". It's "Sloper"...!!!! Just a small mistake. The end is very good. By the way, they play the movie tomorrow 3 August, at 8.50, on ARTE.

I could not agree more with your comment. Olivia de Havilland was the greatest and my favorite actress of all time. Her performance as Catherine Sloper was breathtaking, and I never tire of watching the film though I've seen it many times.

I have watched "The Heiress" very recently and I am shocked to see no attention being given to it by the critics that I like. I love Bette Davis but I would wish some of her attention is given to wonderful Olivia De Havilland's performance. There are themes in "The Heiress" that are universally linked to today. It is such a highly underrated film. Plus, there is video essays on KZfaq about it expect for two reviews. It's so sad. Luckily, the Criterion Collection has released to Blu-ray last year. That film is in the safe hands of film enthusiasts who care.

Morris seemed to be an amiable gold digger. What's the big deal that he chose her for the money? She was flattered and excited by his attention because of his good looks and charm. They both had something valuable to offer and seemed to generally like each other. Doesn't this set up usually work with the unattractive, wealthy older man trading comfort and security for the woman's elegance and looks. Many fine marriages have started this way and grown into deep love. A little humor and wit between Morris and Catherine would have gone a long way in bringing honesty to their situation. That would have allowed room for real love and respect to develop. The tragedy was the father stealing her dignity and rubbing her nose in it. Very cruel and unnecessary. Why could he not see the wealth as a gift that improved her prospects? A little Jane Austen practicality was needed.
