Fans catfished a college basketball player into one of his worst games

Remember 2006, when no one took online privacy seriously and we all talked to each other with AOL Instant Messenger? This former college basketball player definitely does.
Gabe Pruitt, who you may remember from his days at USC or his brief career with the Boston Celtics, had an online flirting session go gradually awry when he realized the "person" he'd been sending messages and photos was not, in fact, a girl, but instead a rival fan intent on throwing Pruitt off his game. And so he did.
This is a story of "catfishing" before that term even existed, a story of a time when the Internet was a wild west and even fairly famous people were cavalier with their privacy ... and a story of how devious fans can genuinely affect the course of a sporting event.

A good episode idea would be detailing the time that John Scott, a hockey enforcer who exists solely to protect the stars and fight with little to no offensive abilities was fan voted into the NHL All-Star Game. Detailing how the NHL tried numerous methods to shut it down and him winning All Star MVP would be a fantastic episode.

The craziest part is that he was one of the most hated goons in the league before all of this. Effective but hated, which is why the internet thought it would be funny to mockingly vote him in. I actually expected him to be pissed the fans were mocking him. Then when the league tried to mess with him, the fans and players rallied behind him.

A few years ago, Michigan students did a similar thing with their hockey team. Girls would get on Tinder to see if any of the opposing team that had come to town would show up and they then would print out huge copies of their Tinder profile to hold up at the game. Some even found that player's parents since the student section surrounds the opposing parent section and take pictures with both the player's profile and their parents

Similar thing happened at Pitt a few years ago. The team we were up against in basketball had a player who was really afraid of squirrels. So the student cheering section printed out pictures of squirrels and the players name and one guy wore a full squirrel costume. I have no idea where one finds a squirrel costume.

It's weird that these people who grew up on AIM or MSN actually put their phone number on the internet. As my group moved to Facebook half of us were freaked out people put their real name out there. They say there was less privacy back then and it isn't true, but it was all up to you what information appeared on the net. These days you've got more information automatically collected by phone apps than you could have thought about posting online in 2006.

Tbh 2006 I was more skeptical of the idea of people meeting online than I am now. Social media was pretty new and online dating was still seen as what weird people who don't have friends do. Now the idea of DMing random people is pretty normalized and we have apps like tinder that are massively popular.
