On her first visit to the Westcountry, Royal Scot Class 4-6-0, 46115 Scots Guardsman puts on a thrilling show as she storms the Devon and Cornwall Banks. Watch this one to the end for an outstanding spectacle!
Our first location is Hazard Farm overlooking Rattery Bank, the only remaining Devon Bank where a good side-on shot is still possible and where the farmer and his family are always so kind and welcoming.
On then to Treboul for the climb from St Germans to Trerulefoot, a stiff climb with good views enjoyed by both photographers and locals alike as a bit of a party outside the summerhouse precedes the appearance of 46115 as she appears on the static camera (set to full zoom for dramatic effect) through the heat haze from the tracks and blasts by with the most wonderful full throttle exhaust sounds.
The return is captured over Brunel's masterpiece at low tide from the old Saltash Ferry slipway where everyone is enjoying a little relaxation both on and off the river. It is often forgotten that this Bridge has a significant rise to and from the central pillar and Guardsman certainly raises the echoes lifting the train up from a standing start over the middle.
Finally to Bow Grange in the Hems Valley where the frustratingly changeable cloud and light of the day gives way to perfect evening sunshine for a particularly stunning flat-out pass on the climb to Dainton.
It is difficult to believe that 46115 is the same class as 46100 as they appear to me to sound so different or maybe it's just enthusiastic driving on the day? whichever, it certainly was a performance to remember.
