Easy build Homemade stove for winter . This stove was made for burning Wood, Veggie Oil and even Coal. Based on a barrel but with a heavy duty cast iron glass door and frame, flue outlet, fire grate and air intake. I built this in my shed to heat my shed for winters to come. It's a nice feeling to be warm in the depths of winter.
This stove is well able to heat my 30 x 20 ft x 14ft high uninsulated shed.

I suggested to you over a year ago to use fresh air from outside to fuel that burner in your garage. You acknowledged my comment, stating it sounded like a good idea. I have not seen an updated video using my suggestion. I think you will like the results. It's a much better idea than cold air being sucked into the building thru every crack in the walls, windows and doors.

Have watched quite a few of your waste oil burning heaters and would like to offer a sugestion. When you set up for waste oil try using a globe valve rather than a gate valve. You will find it much easier to control flow as that is what globe valves are designed for. Gate valves are for isolation not flow control.

What would happen if you put a second barrel above the first and left the exhaust piping where it is? Seems to me that the whole second barrel would be all heat transfer as the hot air would heat two barrels, and exhaust a cooler air mass? Just thinking out loud.

Looking good, Gerry! I think I’ll go with a clear door as well, being new to waste oil burning I think it’ll help with tuning the fuel. I’m buying some property out in the country with a garage without heat... I’ve been saving oil for a couple years now knowing I’d finally have a reason to build a burner. Hahaha I’m loving the multi-fuel idea. Thanks!

Thanks Gerry, a great video about burners, a subject close to my heart, wish I could make my own, you may want to give it a couple of burns outside to make sure you have all the paint off the barrel, I could share many stories about different burners I've seen over the years, I learned a lot from the makers and seen many gas bottle burners, vertical and horizontal, depending on the situation, keep playing /working!

Hey Gerry! I love your videos. I copied another guy on YT who copied you. He mentions you a couple of times but I didn't realize how much he followed you until I watched your vids. So....I really copied you! Lol. Do you answer questions? I built my heater out of a 75 gallon water heater. I welded a bunch of metal tubes through the body as heat exchanger tubes. My burn plate and air hat sit over the hole in the bottom that was left when I cut the propane exhaust pipe out. Over all it works and I can heat my shop with it, but I have to dump a lot of oil into the pan to get the heater hot (700-900F) and I'm just pumping out a bunch of black smoke out the chimney. If I turn the drip feed down to 1.5 to 2 liters/hour it barely stays hot enough to burn. My first air hat had tons of holes and I thought maybe it was getting too much air so I made a new one with limited holes and it doesn't get hot enough. Both versions of the air hat still need a lot of oil and they both lead to putting out a lot of smoke. Do you have any advice for me? I'd appreciate any input.

...I suppose the only color that is heat proof is any color as long as it is black? I agree having a bright candy apple red barrel, heating up an area would look cool.

Hi Martin. It looked great until I wanted heat from it. 😜All the 1000 degree c heat resistant paint I have tried all burns off so unfortunately unless I airgap and use an enamelled outer surface it wont be pretty. The shed looks like a bomb went off at the moment too. More on that in the next video. The weather here at the moment is quite mild but cold on the way. I think it's like that in the States too. Oz are baked out of it. I saw 42c 107f a few days ago. Great to hear from you Martin Cheers Gerry👍👍

@@danyf3116 could it be powder coated?? I think that gets baked on anyway??🤔
@danyf3116
@danyf3116 3 жыл бұрын
@@nigelturner9606 Well yes and no. Yes it could be powder coated but that just make the paint cure and stick better than regular spray paint for example. Also, I would think the heat would separate the powder coat from the metal due to extreme heat. Having said that , I did something last week as a test. I had a flat black spray paint can and I decided to spray my red hot de-galvanized stove pipe to see what it would do. Normally when you spray paint a part that you just welded, thinking it cooled long enough, the paint will bubble or blister instantly. When I did it on my stove pipe, the color became exactly what it would look like if I sprayed and let it dry. It didn't sizzle (like when water is splattered unto hot surface), it didn't burst into flames, nothing but a small puff of smoke once it hit the pipe, and that was it. Done. The paint hasn't changed color in a week and is not peeling off either. Just using cheap ass spray bomb. Now I'll try with different colors from the same in store brand (Princess Auto which is like Harbor Freights type of store) and see if it will do the same . I don't know why it reacted the way it did cause the pipe was red hot. Dunno the temperature but I think that has something to do with it. At a certain temp, the paint will do some chemical/mechanical trickery. That might be interesting for Gerry's future projects that he might want to paint. The pipe is actually connected to the stove that has one of Gerry's oil burner idea and it also is multifuel. Due to lack of space in my shop, I decided to keep the stove outside and away from possible accidents. I turned the valve a bit too much and it started rumbling as if an ATV was parked outside my shop wall!!! Gerry's ideas on videos really mean what he says. When he says it kicks a lot of heat, it does. No arguments from me.

Just wanted to say thanks for your DIY ideas for the oil burner series. I ended up using the one that looks like a top hat about 6 inches high in a circular pan . I use it to heat up a coiled piped in H pattern to heat the coolant that goes through for my radiant floor. Due to lack of space, I have the pipes through the wall and the stove in roofed enclosure behind the building. The burner works so good that one day I was using it and the rumble was so loud, that it shook my metal shed. Either that or the coolant was about to go nuclear but according to my gauges, the temp was only 78C. Scared the shit of me!!! LOL anyway, now I gauge it to about 50C going in my recuperating barrel used as an accumulator. Since the oil burner is in a regular boxed stove, I can also burn wood scraps that fall in the forest behind my house everyday. Cheers Gerry!

Hi Yohahn. Several years is the short answer but if the flame is not directly making the outside of the barrel red hot it will last a long time and they are very good at conducting heat. some fire bricks around the lower perimeter does the trick nicely. Cheers Gerry

Do you think a waste oil drip fed (no air pump/fan) converted wood stove would have enough heat output to heat a 20mx10m shed??
@GerrysDiy
@GerrysDiy 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rhino 9.3 My shed is 30 feet x 20 feet x 14 feet uninsulated but airtight after I went around with my foam gun and it can heat the shed absolutely no problem. If your shed is fairly air tight it can make enough heat nd if your shed is unsulated you will use less oil. Hopw this helps Cheers Gerry 😃

Hey Gerry. I built an oil burning stove out of a large propane tank and used the celebrations and dog food tin concept (built from heavier materials of course), and have a sealed diaphragm in the chamber to force air up through the burn camber as you had stated in other videos. Sadly I can't get a clean burn and can see what appears to be oil soaked soot coming out the chimeny. I'm contemplating boring more holes in the central air induction tube (dog food tin). I'm not sure which is better: Fewer holes therefore greater speed of forced air feeding the flame or more holes leading to slower travelling air but potentially more volume. Are there negatives to having too much air allowed in here? FYI I do have the option of regulating air in with a door at the foot of the cylinder. Cheers for all the videos. Have learned a lot from your videos and gave me the motivation to throw something together!

Hi Mick. Well done on getting a project off the ground. Here's a video of this burner working and heating my water and underfloor heating in my Stanley stove in my house kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iaede7Ghm8yzhXU.html You can hear the air clearly change as the stove pulls all the air for combustion through the burner. What length of flue did you use and what diameter. Also to see if you are lacking airflow in your project you could add a few psi of air into the bottom of your air intake. Airflow is crucial but you can force feed your burner with air if needed too. Hope this helps Send me a video or photos of the build and I'll see if I can help. Email in the about page on youtube. Cheers Gerry👍

We run these as burn barrels. Usually get ~3 years out of them letting them sit out in the elements exposed year round. He also bolted everything in... so when it does give up the ghost, you just cut and swap to a new barrel.
