The reason is two fold. One is to stagger employees farther apart with the potential to request employees to do 30 minute lunch if the store is busy and the 2nd is to stagger to spread out the employees to cover a longer day overall. There is another benefit of improved employee morale from better rested workers.

This is something happened to me recently while on my lunch break. Our break room is directly adjacent to a custodial closet and while I was eating I hear this loud crash. Loud bangs aren't unusual, it's often any of the neighboring stores. But what it was was the eye wash station somehow fell off the wall and solution was just everywhere. Took a few dozen paper towels, mops and a wet dry vac to get it all. Not the worst thing I've ever had to clean up.

Walmart is literally hell on earth. If you work there and enjoy it, you must also enjoy garroting your balls on a barbed fence. You are not wrong when you say it really is truly an awful place. Most of the people I worked with were great (minus the supervisors who were power hungry asshats) but the wage you are paid doesn't match the amount of work you are required to do. It's absolutely asinine what Walmart gets away with. Don't even get me started on their benefits package which basically you will never get because they will make sure that you stay part time (even if you have full time hours, which I did) so that they don't have to give benefits (probably a good topic for you to talk about). It's truly astonishing how stingy they are for how much money they make. Walmart makes a killing and yet pays the lowest, has the highest turnover, miserable overworked employees and has a horrible reputation with mostly everyone. You would think they would try to fix that but they simply could not give a shit about you. Don't work there, don't shop there, just stay the hell away. Costco is better, treat their customers great and you can go there knowing that their employees are actually valued and part of a team and are paid appropriately for that.

I worked for a major (and busy) retail store for over six years and I think my problem was that I often missed breaks. Unless I was running a register (where the supervisor would normally tell you when to go on break), I generally worked by myself in areas that needed someone qualified to cover (food service), areas where going on break during busy periods meant having to play catch-up when I got back (shopping cart retrieval) or, where taking a break meant leaving my work center unattended (photo lab) Even though I did not always get my breaks and the hours left much to be desired, employee morale was pretty good, a lot of managers were cool, and it would definitely beat Wal-Mart.

As a person who currently works at Walmart in Lawn and Garden, I’m always automatically volunteered to do other people’s jobs. Out of curiosity, have you had any interesting stories about “covering” someone? Yes, I hate Walmart too, but my department feels detached from the main store so it doesn’t feel like I’m being looked down upon.

yeah I worked at a place like walmart for like 5 years. Completely agree with how it felt sometimes. They didnt like us talking, but I did it all the time anyways. It made the time go by so much faster plus just having someone to help you made it so much easier. Everyone should be required IMO to work in customer service for a year or two. Changes your whole perspective.

When I worked at Sears in Chandler years ago, the annoying thing about taking lunch was the interruption. I worked mattresses and draperies and it seemed like when I left, the customers came. Sometimes I ate in the mall food court to avoid the Brand Central people because they would come and get me to go help a customer. They were on commission. I was hourly. I had no motivation to go out there. I had motivation to eat and avoid a migraine. Once they gave mattresses to the vacuum people it wasn't my problem anymore. If I was assigned to be cashier in another part of the store and someone needed help in draperies, they had to find someone to take my place while I went down there, until they figured out it was just easier to keep me in home fashions where I left the cashwrap all the time.

What you are describing sounds exactly like my job. I work at an arcade because I wanted to be surrounded by my passion: games. Naturally, any job consisting of retail sucks ass, that was a bullet I was willing to bite. We were discouraged with few workers because it was hard to predict when it will be super packed, or painfully slow. Two workers. We would sometimes get near one hundred people crammed in our tiny arcade and would be left with only two workers. Going on break was a stressful nightmare for me. Because, much like gamestop, our little group of workers became family to me. We were close and leaving that one person behind to deal with the horrors of kids screaming, parents demanding tickets because a game won't spit them out while trying to manage the full ticket redemption is a nightmare that I don't wish on my worst enemy. NEW SUBSCRIBER BY THE WAY, I love your channel and I debated on joining the Gamestop family. So glad that I didn't, I feel like I dodged a bullet.

When I worked at Sears back in high school I was very fortunate to work with some nice folks. That made the experience a lot more memorable. However when I worked at a GAP during college I hated it the whole time I was there. They were always watching me on camera, making little suggestions every time I approached customers and was just given a snotty attitude every day. What sucked more was it was an all female gap store so they made me feel uncomfortable all the time. Place was the worst retail experience I ever had.

At CVS we would get 30-45 minutes of lunch break depending on how long our shift was, and we never had enough coverage so the person at the register would have to call the other person who is on lunch to help take care of a long line of customers constantly.

I used to work for a grocery store local to the south east, and we would be scheduled for an hour lunch, but sometimes my managers would ask us to take a 30. Sometimes depending on how busy we got, and if our managers weren’t on shift, we would skip lunch all together for the simple fact that we couldn’t afford to take it. I now work at Home Depot and always have an hour lunch unless I am working overtime on a 4 hour shift. Then my supervisor allows me to take a 30 minute once I pass 6 hours.

They were selling Evolve for the Xbox one for 6 dollars complete (no fake case or cover\sleeve) and a copy of watch dogs for 10 bucks. I generally find satisfaction there every time I go. The employees are nice and arent pushy and the manager isn't rude to customers and employees. It is a nice place and doesn't feel like a bad scamming GameStop

The GameStop I worked at which was bigger not that busy but still made a lot of money due to high pre order traffic especially with collectors editions. It was nice because it had a bathroom and a 8 hour day worked out better with one. But sometimes I would cover at the ghetto stores which where insanely busy and messy. And bad news there. No bathroom. So leaving the store to go to the restroom was a fucking fantasy

It was a thousand times more boring than working days. Only benefit was you got paid a dollar more (I didn’t really consider it a benefit). Then the assholes laid me off after Xmas - miserable time. Customers were the worst when I got a lunch break, not all of them some of them were cool but we had a few. I would go on break on a Saturday when we were busy, and a customer would ask if I could help them and I would say no i'm sorry, i'm on a lunch break and most customers would say oh ok no problem. BUT I had one customer that when I said that to them would say to me, "i don't care, you don't deserve a lunch, you only make minimum wage, now do your job and help me find this movie I am looking for." Okay, so here's a different question... I know I've mentioned in these comments before that I work for one of those companies that goes around doing everyone's inventory, but I only know how it goes from the perspective of being on the team that comes into the different stores. If you have any experience with us coming through (be it my employer, RGIS, or one of our competitors, like WIS), it would be pretty interesting to find out what the story is from the store staff's perspective, basically having a team of strangers come through and count all your product... P.S. - I do not envy your lunch experiences. Mine's basically walking out to my truck and eating in my driver seat

Be lucky you get a Lumch Break. I work in a Warehouse, we don’t get Breaks. We do work 4 hours a Day... but the Amount of Work and the Physical Requirements of the Job make those 8 Hours into 8+

In Greece gas is much more expensive like almost double that amount. 1,50 euros per liter , a gallon is almost 4 liters. and mind you that the Euro is slightly more expensive than the dollar.

I've had my fair share of just surviving at jobs, my old job I got less then 15 hours a week for the last month I was there, there excuse was slow sales and cutting hours across the board. Having less then 600 a month already by that time motivated me to end that bs and I got a full time job that pays way better.

I remember when I worked at walmart, I went 10 minutes over one week because the HR manager stopped me before I could clock out in time. Next day I was called in to the office and told I need to clock out in time, and if it happens again I would be put on probation.

My first job at WAWA had ONE 20 min lunch break. And it was paid, so if they were busy you just don't eat

FANTA!! seriously, the same thing happened to me at FYE!! The idiot they would schedule who always would called off and then they would call me at random times. Like, 6pm on a Tuesday night, we close at 9pm, its Tuesday and its dead why do you need me to come in, even though you had someone scheduled. Then they would give you the person who called off excuse of why they didn't come in. The one time they said the person called off because their tire fell off their car. WHAT!? no it didn't. They needed a new excuse, because the last 3 weeks they called off they used the "im sick" excuse. Like you said you feel bad for saying no cause you know that the rule is 2 people have to close ( at our store you had too). They knew I was a good hard worker that was reliable, so they knew I wouldn't say no. If you say no, they know you know that you don't have to come in, they get passive aggressive and start guilt tripping. The manager would say what am I suppose to do now, I would reply, I don't know maybe give me the hours instead of them. then I would get replies like, "well I guess I will have to take the bank bag to bank by myself and get fired, or worse robbed." These are people I kind of considered friends so then you feel bad when you don't come in, so yea you feel forced. My pay was said too, a long with hours, when I left i was getting 3hrs a week. I think they did it to me on purpose, the manager would give me low hours knowing that if he called me in that I would because I would need the hours. It was chaos in that store. Anyways, enjoying the videos and the podcast with you and Eric, keep up the good work guys!! :-)

I worked as a house keeper, and if you even got close to 30 hours, they told you to fuck off. They didn't want anyone to get full time.

i did housekeeping for years. Pay sucks and causes sciatica eventually from constant stooping, reaching and bending over to clean. Pain in knees, etc.
